Happy 10 years Riot! I’ve been playing this game since Vayne came out and it still means so much to me to this day. I met some of my closest friends through the community and the best opportunities to work with Riot that helped my career. So have a happy 10 years and here’s to another!

So I was searching for "Legends of Runetera Janna" to see if the new announced card game had any art of Janna's new design (Yes she has a new design!!!) from the mobile game. And I found this... I've never seen this response. It's been 3 years and I'm just now seeing it. I love it.

Random ass thoughts out of nowhere from a dead blog on a single sentence referring to Janna from a lore story that is probably old news but I just read it yesterday so yeah:

So yesterday I was looking around for new things on the Runeterra map. (My favorite thing Riot has ever made probably.) I was checking out if there was more new things I hadn’t seen aside from Wakanda Ixtal and I saw a new story featuring Tristana, Lulu and Draven called The Whispering Doodad.

For those of you who haven’t read it, the story is told from the perspective of a nature spirit. This spirit protects and nurtures a glade in Noxus and stuff just happened to start going down one night in their little domain. This nature spirit has given us some insight on the well.. nature of nature spirits.

We nature spirits are drawn to places like this. They nurture us, as we in turn nurture them. You can find us all over the world—in some places more than others, yes, but if there’s magic bubbling up, like as not you’ll find a spirit like me.

We’ve learned nature spirits thrive off magic and in turn nurture their domains so they can thrive and give off more magic. It’s a symbiotic relationship. And according to this spirit, many mortals have lost the ability to “truly see.” Things like nature spirits aren’t something humans are aware of. They’re not in-tune with magic. However Yordles are, and they can see them just fine. It seems nature spirits and yordles can even be friends.

Now the juicy bit. The three lines that got my mind going and prompted me to come here and barf this information on you people:

It sounds like the winds are speaking, passing secrets between the trees. Maybe they are—you can never really know what the winds are saying. Well, maybe the blue bird of the seas knows, but she doesn’t roam far from the sunken city these days.

That single sentence at the end. It’s everyone’s favorite mom of Zaun! She’s known by the other nature spirits as the Blue Bird of the sea. This is huge! Janna’s biography implied that she may have been manifested from the wills and prayers of sailors in need but this shows she may have been around before that. The sea was this nature spirit’s domain. Yet instead of like the narrator of this story, who does best to keep their glade prosperous and lively despite humans, Janna seemed to benefit from them. These humans fed Janna with the magic of their collective wills and it gave Janna more and more control of this domain, helping humans to thrive in the dangerous environment.

Where it seems likely that most nature spirits probably think of humans as an annoyance at best, Janna loves them. Does everything in her power to help them and to grow from them. The blue bird of the sea was not made by humans unknowingly simply to serve them, perhaps her physical form is shaped by that, but Janna herself was around before that. This means she had the choice to help people. She does it for her own reasons, not because she was thought up to do it. It means she can grow and learn, something I was afraid her new bio had stripped from her.

I’m probably crazy for going this in-depth over a couple of sentences and for being moved by them so much, but this story has given me a lot of hope for Janna’s future and her ability to truly be an interesting character with her own desires and needs.

Now if only Rito could give her a visual and voice update to reflect that...
