I think of her daily, when I have my morning tea on the porch and spot her lotus, still floating, down below in the pool. In a way, she is still with me, and I can hear her heart beating whenever I need to reassure myself that she's alright.

Sometimes I fall asleep thinking of the last time I saw her, when she was young and bright-polished and out to save the world - and then she did.

She did.

Would you forgive a human teenager who pulled Runaan’s hair in the aftermath of King Harrow being killed? He’s a good person, but not only did King Harrow care about him more than his own dad does, but also Runaan killing King Harrow also meant he had failed in his duty to protect him…

It's hard to forgive someone abusing my husband's hair, but it sounds like the situation was complicated and intense. And I remember being a young man, too.

If he is sorry for pulling Runaan's hair, I think I could forgive him. And he should apologize to me, since I am Runaan's official hair care expert and it's my work he's damaging! I braided that hair with love.

It may so have happened that I strummed this song while walking "alone" in the forest yea many years ago, to tell that leaping, hopping Moonshadow elf who was trailing quietly after me that he could come down now because I noticed that while he was indeed very silent, so was the whole forest around me!

Even Runaan's silences have always spoken to me. I will always hear him, somehow.

Do you ever think about what your life would be like if you'd never met Runaan? Sometimes I think about what mine might be if I'd never met the best people in it (one of those is you btw)

It would hurt less, if I didn't know what I'd lost. To know love and joy so deeply, and then to feel it slip right through your fingers no matter how tightly you try to hold onto it... To lose, and fail, and ache over not having been enough to save him... It's enough to drive an elf to some dark corners, love.

So yes, I think of that. How I'd feel less hurt now. And then I feel bad for thinking it. Runaan made me happy, while I had him in my life. And I treasure every one of the smiles he gave me. And nothing can ever take that away from me, no matter what.

if so would you think about just adopting a moonshadow elf or other kinds of elf

Seems to me, love, if you go into adoption with the same mindset as going into the market for supper, you might need a bit more time to understand people before you commit.

If Runaan and I ever had more children in our lives, it would be because we thought we could help. Help them, help the world, help each other. And you can't look at someone and decide that just from what their outside looks like. That's Moonshadow 101!

Don't tell anyone, but I'd love a house full of kids and pets of all sorts. All sorts! Runaan might object, though.... He really doesn't like clutter, or chaos, or loud noises...

Oh, I know! We just need a big enough house that he has a nice quiet space of his own, far enough from the chaos! Then he can always feel safe and cozy.

Don't worry for my feelings, either - Runaan and Aaravos are two hot powerful dramatic elves, and people have noticed their opposites-attract energy for years, but I'll get to keep him in at least one universe, and that's plenty for me!

Dear Moon,

It’s always nice to see your face again. There’ve been so many cycles recently when that’s the best thing I had to look forward to. And you’ve always been there for me. This humble craftsman has nothing but praise for your consistency!

I’m doing better this month, you’ll be glad to know. Started a new pet project - actually started, not just doodled bits and bobs this time! Still not sure I’m fit for commissions again, but maybe next cycle? Hope is good!

I had to start, you see - it’s a moon timer for the windowbox garden I cobbled together over the winter, and it’s just about time to plant. Just a little gadget that turns the boxes every now and again so the plants get all the moonlight they can. I think it’ll need a bit of leverage so the boxes can turn without dumping out or scraping the tree, but I’m confident. And lazy. Why go all the way down to the little old garden space out by the empty paddock when I can just lean out the window and clip myself some herbs and veggies?

…No, I know. This is just easier. And nutrition is important! 

You know he’d tell me so.

Anyway. Thanks for listening, and for shining so bright. I’ve got to get back to work!
