"To summarize, Devai can either be born immortal or they can be turned. Those who are turned require the help of a Mentor to help them adjust to their new life otherwise they become what my people call an Orphan. Speaking from experience, it's something you'd be wise to avoid.
There is... One other way to create a devas, but such a practice is considered taboo among our kind. It's probably best we leave that topic be for now,"

Hi!!! I'm not sure how old your blog is, but I've stumbled across it now! I was just reading some of your stuff and I wanted to know: Is 'Devai" the term you're using for the Nation-people? I never know what to call them myself, like how would humans refer to them as, do they know they are their country people, and what not. If Yes, how did you come up with the term 'Devai'? :0
Hello!!
Yes, 'Devai' is the term that I use for nations in my headcanon! It's based on the word 'Diwata'. In pre-colonial filipino tradition, the Diwata are nature spirits who protect the land and sometimes the people who reside within their land too. I thought that it was appropriate, given what nations are supposed to represent!
Devai (or Devas, singular) is how they refer to each other within the Devai community. Humans have come up with different names for them across the centuries. "Nation" is a relatively recent name for them, which I like to think started to be coined by the masses in the 19th century, particularly in Europe.
As for whether people know them or not, I think that varies greatly depending on the culture and the devas in question themselves. There are Devai who are bonded to communities who are 100% aware of who they are and what they represent. There are some whose identities, by choice or otherwise, are on a strict need-to-know basis. Devai can blend into society easily as they don't appear different from the average human. Really, the only way you'd be able to tell that there's more to them than they seem is if you 1) saw them in a fight, 2) spend a prolonged amount of time around them.
Hope that answered your question!! ^^

I can’t keep it in anymore THIS IS SO FUCKING GOOD. I just love your characterisation of Gilbert and how you interpret the nature of ‘nations’, as well as the sort of culture they’ve spawned within themselves over the years
Reading your blog just gives me this warm fuzzy feeling inside and I would like to thank you for giving us this beautiful thing :D
Aww thank you!! I'm really glad that you enjoy my take on Gilbert that much 💖💖💖I still can't update as much as I want because of school, but lemme drop a drawing of the doc anyway

"I suppose it's safe to assume we're not on first name basis at the moment, eh, Polen?"
@kwiecista hi ania :^) everyone say hi to ania, i used to write with her way back when and the way she writes Magda is [chef's kiss]
HC note: gilbert feels that he's being rude because in my meta, devai don't refer to each other by given names unless they share a close, personal relationship. if you wanna know more about how names work, please refer to this (x) post!

"It was like watching a car crash unfold in slow motion, but worse. Worse, because no matter how hard I tried to piece together her symptoms in my head, I was coming up blank. What use was all the knowledge I'd built up over years, CENTURIES, if none of it could help my own child?
... No matter. It isn't about me - Gisella's currently being taken care of at Dr. Rapoport's new neonatal clinic at Charité. Ingeborg hasn't exactly worked with Devai children, but she's the best in her field, and our best shot at figuring out what's wrong. She, Erzsi, and I will figure it out. I refuse to give up hope, because if I do...
... I don't know what I'd do,"
--
I'll answer the additional lore stuff in a separate ask, but I will add a little history note about Dr. Ingeborg Rapoport! She worked at Charite from 1959 to 1973 and founded the first neonatal clinic in Germany. She was also appointed as a Professor of Neonatology in 1969. Prior to this, she worked at the Cincinnati Children's Hospital in the US, where she met her husband Samuel Mitja Rapoport.
Rapoport was denied her medical degree in 1938 because she was half Jewish. Despite this, she was able to pursue medical schooling in the US and in 2015, Hamburg University finally granted her a doctorate. It was supposed to be an honorary one, but Rapoport insisted on doing it the proper way and presented her thesis on diphtheria, which was the same topic she wrote about originally. She received a "magna cum laude", the second best possible result for a doctoral thesis. (x)

"I cannot WAIT until Konrad comes back from the West with some real coffee..."
As usual, history / headcanon notes are under the cut!
History notes:
Coffee was very popular in East Germany and an average of 3.3 billion East German marks were spent on it each year. But there was a shortage in 1976, resulting in the production of cheaper coffee brands called Mischkaffee, which was a combination of 50% coffee and 50% filler - Usually pea flour or malt. This was pretty unpopular though, as the pea flour was prone to clogging and ultimately destroying coffee machines.
Another way to get genuine coffee was through Westpakets - Care packages sent by Western citizens to their relatives in the East. Common items to include in a Westpaket were clothes, bedding, nylon stockings, baking supplies, and of course, coffee. West German currency was prohibited, along with cassettes, medicine, newspapers, and military themed toys.
In exchange, families on the East side of the wall sent back Ostpakets. This package often included food, spirits, confections (including Stollen, a popular holiday bread) and handicrafts. Exchanging packages was an important way for families to keep contact in spite of the wall.
Headcanon notes:
As the representative of Berlin, Konrad is one of the few in his family that's allowed to travel between the East and the West. He always comes back with gifts for his family after his trip, usually containing goods that they can't get in the East. He has also smuggled in more than his fair share of contraband items.

"On the bright side, I think this one's no longer active. I suppose I'll have to thank him for that later. Two decades of this shit and it's honestly getting more annoying than anything,"
@mauerfrau Thank you for the ask!
More notes / headcanons under the cut!
History Stuff:
Erich Mielke was the head of the Stasi from 1957-1989 and oversaw their extensive, and at times brutal, surveillance operations. Shortly after the wall fell, Mielke was brought to trial and was charged with high treason, embezzling public funds, and the murder of East German citizens shot while trying to defect to the West according to his command. The proceedings were adjourned, however, as in 1994, the presiding judge deemed Mielke mentally unfit to stand trial due to dementia. He died in a nursing home in 2000. (x)
Headcanon Stuff:
While Gilbert did spend a gross majority of the 50s-60s living on-site at Charite, he began to live more frequently at his actual apartment in the 70s onward. A big contributing factor to this was finding out that he and Erzsi were expecting after a night of too many beers and not enough thoughts
Despite the latter, Erzsi and Gilbert didn't live together permanently during the cold war. Instead, they would take turns visiting each other and staying at each other's places. They remained active in their respective careers and underground resistance movements in their home countries all the while.
Erzsi was instrumental in pulling Gilbert out of the depressed and apathetic state he fell into from the 50s to the mid 60s. For better or for worse, they've become each other's life line during a turbulent period of their lives.
The "Him" Gilbert is referring to is Reiner. After the uprisings of 1953, Gilbert found himself sanctioned from job opportunities. Reiner struck a deal and agreed to work as an agent for them in exchange for allowing Gilbert to resume his medical practice. This is inspired by a story I read in Anna Funder's book, Stasiland, about a young woman who suddenly found herself being rejected from universities and jobs because she refused to break up with her Italian boyfriend. I highly recommend the book if you were ever interested in hearing more stories from people who lived under Stasi surveillance on the East Side!
Being under constant surveillance means Gilbert developed some paranoid tendencies. He tended to be incredibly cautious around people he didn't completely trust and habitually checks his surroundings for listening bugs and hidden cameras. This is a habit he hasn't completely shaken off, up until the modern day. If he were to go stay at a hotel or somewhere else out of his everyday norm, he will check every single nook and cranny for potential bugs.

"...As for Ludwig - The last time we spoke in person was at the Potsdam Conference in 1945. We've had a few supervised calls since then, but it's been harder to get a hold of him since the wall went up.

I think it's time I checked in on some patients. Excuse me,"

"I suppose the long and short of it is that it's been... Hard. I thought distancing myself from all the politicking would make things easier but I should have known better. Either way, complaining about it won't help. I just have to keep going for the sake of my patients and my colleagues."

"Sundays are reserved for family, of course. And there are exceptions to this schedule... In times of war or political unrest, for example, I often find myself turning my attention to political and military concerns. Occasionally, my medical duties and political duties will cross paths and, in all honesty, those matters are what tire me out the most!
Now if you were to ask me which one I prefer... Well, I would bet you already knew the answer to that,"
