U.S. Department of Agriculture rules stipulate that hot food can’t be purchased with SNAP benefits, which are conveyed through Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards. Rotisserie chicken and prepared deli foods are also off limits. ...
But the store will also be selling the raw ingredients of portioned-out meals in kits, like chicken with potatoes and vegetables. After the customer buys the uncooked foods with their SNAP benefits, they will leave the grocery and walk to the rear of the building, into a separate shop that contains a kitchen.
The customer will hand over the meal kit to a worker, who will, in turn, give them a recently cooked version of the raw meal at no charge. The uncooked ingredients will then made into another meal, for another customer.
Oh this is a dope idea.

I think it's important to remember, as a rule of thumb, if you take advantage of a social service, it actually makes it easier for other people who need that service to access it. Most of the time, when these services get cut, it's because politicians will look at usage and say "see, no one is really using this thing, we can afford to trim the budget for food stamps by at least half". Whereas if you decide to step up and use these programs, even if you feel like you "don't really need it", at bare minimum it's another data point advocates can use to say "hey, look, people are using this thing, this is an important service we are providing, do not cut our funding".

Gentle information sharing that if you make under $19k a year you probably qualify for food stamps and state Medicaid. This varies state to state, but absolutely worth a Google.
It was extremely easy to apply and I now have full medical, some dental, psych, and $280 a month of food completely free.
No co-pays. And because Oregon is... slightly less bad than many states, many types of therapy are covered, a chiropractor, gender affirming surgery, it goes on. Abortion. I just got in with my free PCP who also offers telehealth.
Please look into benefits. It varies state by state, my experiences in the Midwest and South weren't as easy and all-encompassing. But SNAP and Medicaid made things possible for my dad and I in Indiana too, and I'm deeply grateful he taught me not to listen to internalized shame about it.
I've made a post about grocery shopping while poor that's still going around and helping people, let's add to this one too! Do you have information about government benefits? I just want to get people seeing and talking about this because it could change a life.

In the wake of pandemic-induced school closures in March 2020, districts grappled with how to continue to feed the more than 29 million children who relied on the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). That same spring, the U.S. Department of Agriculture issued temporary waivers to increase meal program flexibility and help districts feed their students. More recently, the use of school meal waivers has contributed to alleviating a host of challenges school districts face, such as pandemic-related supply chain issues, a shortage of food service workers, and increased food costs. 
The waiver that garnered the most attention was an extension of the Seamless Summer Option (SSO) which, among other things, provided schools with a higher reimbursement rate for meals served and allowed schools to provide meals to all students without collecting payments or documentation establishing qualification for free or reduced-price lunch (FRPL) status. Ninety-percent of School Food Authorities (which are responsible for administering meal programs in schools and districts) reported the use of SSO waivers to provide free meals to students during the 2021-22 school year. The SSO was by far the most used waiver, with the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program and NSLP’s after-school snacks coming in second and third with a significantly lower combined adoption rate of 17%.
Congress passed the bipartisan Keep Kids Fed Act on Friday June 27th, extending the waivers until the end of the summer and provided some short-term relief for students and schools as a result. However, school districts will face numerous challenges when the waivers run their course in just a few months (unless they are extended by Congress again). Without the increased reimbursement rate from the federal government, most schools cannot afford to continue to provide free meals for all students. In the upcoming year, more students will qualify for free or reduced-price lunches, and schools face increased bureaucratic costs associated with collecting and processing applications that establish FRPL status for the NSLP and resuming the collection of lunch debts.

Districts have two main options to feed students in the 2022-23 school year: revert to normal operation of the NSLP or, if they qualify, enroll in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP). A school participating in NSLP provides free or subsidized meals to income-eligible students while the CEP allows high-poverty schools to serve universal free school meals. Nationwide, 15.5 million children currently attend one of 68% of eligible schools that provide free breakfast and lunch through participation in CEP. Under both programs, schools receive reimbursements for meals categorized as free, reduced-price, or paid, with free meals being reimbursed at the highest rate. The total amount reimbursed depends on how many meals of each category are served.
The qualifying metric to determine a school’s eligibility for CEP is the identified student percentage (ISP). A student is “identified” based on household participation in federal welfare programs (SNAP, TANF, etc.) or their status as a homeless, migrant, runaway, or foster child. Schools are eligible to participate in CEP if they have an ISP of at least 40%, or when at least 40% of the students in a school meet these conditions.
Since many SNAP-eligible families do not access welfare program benefits and would therefore be uncounted in the ISP measure, a 1.6 multiplier is used to approximate the true percentage of students who would qualify for FRPL. This determines what percentage of meals served can be reimbursed at the free rate. For example, using this formula, a school with an ISP of 40% would have 64% of their meal costs reimbursed (0.40 x 1.6 = 0.64), and a school with an ISP of 62.5% would have 100% of their meal costs covered. This means that schools with ISP values between 40% and 62.5% must bear some (but not all) of the cost of meal provision to their students, with schools closer to the low end of that range facing larger cost burdens, potentially deterring them from enrolling in the program.
cep participation benefits students, families, and schools
CEP appears to improve academic achievement and behavioral outcomes. Research suggests that CEP adoption is associated with higher math test scores and attendance rates. The free breakfast provided under CEP may also result in improvements in classroom behavior and decreases in suspension rates.
These school-based benefits come with broader benefits associated with addressing food insecurity and poverty. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 15.8% of children live in a food-insecure household. Family income is often volatile, which can present challenges for FRPL eligibility, and the improved income stability from consistently receiving free meals at school reduces the number of unexpected expenses a family faces.
There is also work highlighting the reduced average meal costs resulting from participation in CEP. When schools adopt CEP, student participation in school meal programs increases, which can decrease average per-student costs through economies of scale. Schools participating in CEP spend $0.67 less per lunch and $0.58 less per breakfast served when accounting for food, labor, and administrative costs.
Why, then, would some schools not participate? And which ones haven’t been participating?
what factors contribute to choosing between nslp and cep?
To shed some light on this issue, we use recently published data from Virginia and Massachusetts on CEP participation and eligibility corresponding to the 2021-22 school year. (We focus on these states because their data enable this type of analysis.)
Massachusetts implemented CEP for the first time during the 2013-14 school year, and Virginia launched its program the following year. Further, Virginia is set to alter its approach next school year with new state legislation that requires all CEP-eligible schools to apply to participate for 2022-23. The state will grant waivers for school districts only if implementation of CEP would not be “financially viable.” Massachusetts, meanwhile, is still trying to resolve what approach they will take next year. State house legislators have included an extension to the current pandemic-induced meal waivers in the budget for next year, but it has not been finalized.
Cost is one of the main concerns school leaders have about CEP. The current model only provides full reimbursement for schools with an ISP above 62.5%, with schools with an ISP between 40% and 62.5% receiving partial funding (recall the description of the multiplier in the previous section). Figure 1 below shows the degree to which schools are participating by plotting their participation status and ISP. Each dot represents a school, with dark (light) blue dots indicating schools that are eligible (ineligible) to participate in CEP. The figure shows which schools opt in and which schools opt out.

Figure 1 seems to indicate considerable cost sensitivity in districts’ decision-making about how to provide meals. Virtually all schools above an ISP of 62.5% participate, and as we drop closer to 40%, more schools appear on the “not participating” side of the graph (while still eligible). Below 40%, some schools are observed participating in CEP by joining with others (ineligible schools can be grouped with eligible schools by their district – and the whole group can be eligible if the group average ISP exceeds 40%). This suggests, perhaps unsurprisingly, that more districts would like to participate in CEP if it were made more affordable to them.
To try to curb the prevalence of districts deterred from participation due to costs, an increase of the multiplier for reimbursement was proposed in Build Back Better for elementary schools, from 1.6 to 2.5 (among other changes). As 2.5 x 40% is 100%, this would mean that all qualifying schools would be fully reimbursed if they elected to participate in CEP.
The decision to enroll in CEP is heavily dependent on cost, but cost is not the only factor. When districts move into CEP, they stop receiving individual NSLP applications and rely on direct certification based on participation in other welfare programs. Since schools might differ in their eligibility based on these different measures, a move to CEP can affect the “poverty ranking” of schools within a district. For instance, if two schools have 45% and 50% of qualifying students through direct certification, but those same schools then have 65% and 55% of qualifying students when household applications are included, then their ranking of need switches if they opt into CEP.
This could alter the distribution of Title I funds and other resources within a district, potentially making at least some schools and districts reticent to join CEP. (Notably, too, an Urban Institute analysis finds that ISP does not accurately reflect the “true level of need,” and child poverty rates within states only loosely correspond to ISP.)

Adopting a universal meal program like CEP appears to offer considerable social and educational benefits while potentially lowering costs and the bureaucratic burden. Though participation in CEP has been increasing, 31% of eligible schools did not participate during the 2019-20 school year. Cost is quite clearly a factor, and potential shifts in the intra-district distribution of Title I funds can play a role in the decision-making process, too. Some states, like Maine and Virginia, have pushed for statewide adoption of CEP and expanded universal school meal efforts. If Congress fails to provide a longer-term solution, states may need to step up to feed America’s children and relieve the host of economic challenges confronting school districts and families.

Plan B is shelf stable for up to 4 years. Afterpill is shelf stable for about 18 months.
Plan B is currently available over the counter, and you can find coupons for it online for various retailers; some of those coupons require a prescription so check the coupon details carefully. Both of these medications can be ordered online.
Plan B and Afterpill in the 1.5mg tablets are less effective for people over 176 pounds, however it is safe to double the dose, so if you are heavier order two doses. Ella is also effective for heavier people, but requires a prescription.
Emergency contraception is effective for a short period after sex. You need to take Plan B or Afterpill within 72 hours of unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy.
IUDs and birth control implants are effective long-term birth control that does not require your partner to participate in using the birth control or even be aware of it. IUDs are 99% effective and are effective for 3-12 years depending on type. Planned Parenthood can place an IUD for you, and so can many gynecologist's offices, and IUDs are covered under most health insurance plans. Talk to your doctor or gynecologist about how to get an IUD. Birth control implants are 99% effective and are effective for up to 5 years. Like IUDs, you can talk to your doctor or gynecologist, or visit Planned Parenthood, to get an IUD.
The birth control methods listed here are not effective for preventing STIs, they are for pregnancy prevention only.
If you can become pregnant but do not want to be pregnant, now is a good time to consider a long-term birth control option like an IUD or a birth control implant, and to purchase emergency contraception like Plan B or Afterpill to have it onhand in an emergency.

Good news of you have a low income and a high internet bill: The Biden Administration is changing that.
The Affordable Connectivity Program will provide plans of at least 100 Megabits per second of speed for no more than $30. An estimated 48 million Americans will qualify.
Twenty internet providers, including national companies like AT&T, Comcast and Verizon, as well as regional companies, such as Hawaiian Telecom and Jackson Energy Authority in Tennessee, have committed to the program.

I just realized both op and the commenter are insane trad christains so im deleting my reblog (because im not platforming their shit – this is ALSO why im censoring their URLs I’m not going to give them traffic) and instead reposing it with the following links/information:
1) The WHO still actively hosts a guide on how to create safe milk substitutes when access to breastmilk/milk substitutes are unavailable on the Institutional Repository for Information Sharing (iris). The guide is called “Infant Feeding in Emergencies: A Guide for Mothers”. Relevant information starts on page 38.
2) Here is a link to the archived guide WITH THE CAUTION that I was not able to find out why its no longer provided by the WHO or iris. It could be that the information is out of date. I am only sharing it because I think the visuals may be helpful for people who have trouble reading written directions. Consult the above link first, then refer to this guide only if you need clarification on how to perform certain actions. Link to archive.
3) The language in that second comment throws up so may red flags. I cropped it to only the information needed to understand the context of this post because I find it immensely suspect. The repeated allusions to 2020 for no apparent reason (but I can guess why, as an infection disease scientist) come across as loaded or dog-whistely. I would advise against sharing the OP for that reason. But because the information being provided is important and not well known, I’m making this alternative post for people to reblog. 
4) The implication that the WHO is censoring information based on a 404 page is a really flimsy and extreme conclusion to jump to. The “Infant Feeding in Emergencies” guide I linked above also goes to a 404 page on the WHO’s main website - but again, can be accessed through iris instead. So no, the information on how to feed infants in a food crisis is not being censored by the WHO.
5) A more likely cause for the guide disappearing is that the link broke and they didn’t fix it. If you look at the original URL it indicates the guide was posted in a subcategory on the WHO’s website about International Crises, specifically in the Middle East. If you try to type in a shortened versions of that URL (specifically https://www.who.int/hac/crises/ or the slightly modified http://www.who.int/hac/crises/en/) you’ll see that the subdomain that was present with relevant info breaks around 2020. In fact, while testing this hypothesis, I came across this information page in a November 2021 version of the URL https://www.who.int/home/cms-decommissioning (which I was redirected to automatically from http://www.who.int/hac/crises/en/):

There is no nefarious conspiracy theory. The link simply broke - as many many many many links do on the internet. The second commenters reply is proven bunk by a little bit of fact checking.
sorry for the long post, but I think the information on infant nutrition substitutes is genuinely useful, lifesaving info – but i’m not going to give more people with dangerous ideological views spouting nonsense a platform.

“Low-income households qualifying for the Affordable Connectivity Program, passed by Congress, can receive up to $30 per month off of their internet bills. Since the ISPs that made the commitment to the White House agreed to offer high-speed internet plans to ACP households at no more than that amount, participants will be able to receive internet service effectively for free.
The White House said the commitments come from companies including AT&T, Verizon and Comcast (parent company of CNBC owner NBCUniversal). In total, the participating ISPs offer high-speed internet in places where more than 80% of the U.S. population lives and close to 50% of rural residents.”

Okay, USA followers, you know how we all hate bank fees? I mean, you overdraw your account by $1.23 and you get charged $25.00? That's evil.
As of Jan 26, 2022, the Biden Administration CFPB (Consumer Financial Protection Bureau) is bringing the hammer down on junk fees. This is more than just bank fees - this is going after the junk fees on things like prepaid cards, loans, bank transfers, credit card late fees, even closing costs on a mortgage.
The CFPB needs public comments, like the opinions of real people who are affected by these fees, to build a case about telling financial organizations that THEY CAN'T CHARGE THEM ANYMORE.
The CFPB says it’s particularly interested in hearing from older and lower-income consumers, students, service members and people of color.
There's some good detail about the comments in this investopedia article. The easiest way to comment is to send an email to [email protected]. Include Docket No. CFPB-2022-0003 in the subject line of the message.
Note that these are public comments. They will be published online through the CFPB website. Don't include account numbers, social security numbers, or full names. Tell a story - tell about the time you overdrew your account by $1.23 and the bank took $35. Tell about how you signed up for a credit card and the company charged you a bunch of fees you didn't even know about. Tell about how you transferred money from your savings account to a checking account and the bank charged you $2.50.
These junk fees are a slap in the face of ordinary people who can't refuse to pay, and the CFBP is taking aim at the banks that charge them. To read what CFPB director Rohit Chopra had to say about this call to action, click here.
