Coronavirus Venting

//ok so this probably isn’t the right place to put this but you know what? I’m angey. If you don’t wanna read, feel free to scroll past, but if you wanna read, go ahead. 

To give context: I was meant to graduate on May 22, 2020. 

My entire senior year is being stripped away from me all at once. My class all across America, even across the world, has looked forward to this day for probably around a decade. A decade or more of sitting in a class listening to boring lectures and taking boring notes, knowing that each day is one step closer to freedom. 

And now that freedom is farther away than ever. 

We all thought that it was fun and games when we were out of school for two weeks, just in case. 

We all thought that it was just a long vacation, and we might have some school work here and there, but for the most part we all get to be our true introverted selves and binge netflix.

We all thought that come April, we would be back in school.

Then they canceled the SAT/ACT. 

And then the comeback date. 

And then Prom. 

And now, it’s our graduation. 

In my state, my governor has just declared that the rest of the school year is basically canceled. Everything will be continued online. And I am pissed. 

I watched my cousins graduate. I watch them walk across the field and grab their diplomas, going into good colleges, their whole lives ahead of them. 

I was worried that they would be able to go. 

Now I’m worried I may not be able to go to my own graduation. 

For the love of god, I know that some of us don’t just have the option of staying home. 

I’m one of them. I am the only person in my house that can drive, aside from my dad, who has an essential job. My mom has a neurological condition that leaves her unable to drive, so here I am, the only one left. I am the only one that can leave the house, and I am the one most susceptible to getting it. I have an autoimmune disorder and 5 days ago I was unknowingly exposed to COVID-19. My symptoms have been chalked down to allergies, due to them leaving so quickly. 

But I still have to leave the house, with my homemade hand Sanitzer, disinfectant spray, clorox wipes, face mask, gloves, and covered head to toe in the southern heat that is already suffocatingly dense. 

I never thought I would want to go back to school, but now I do more than ever. 

I don’t know how I will be able to get the next few months back once this all blows over. 

But I will get on my knees and beg for this all to be some screwed up fever dream and I’m just in a coma imagining all of this. 

Even though I know that no one is listening, I will still try, and I will do everything I can to retain my senior year. Because I refuse to be on a damn google meets stream during my graduation. I refuse to do my own prom or graduation through a computer. 

I will be there in person, hazmat suit on if I have to, if it means that the quaranteens just to walk across the plastic astroturf of the football field, and across the stage, leaving with a diploma, and a new life ahead of us.
