We need a digital archive of LGBTQ+ works of art, science, and every other conceivable work we can share between each other because we are beyond the genocide warning level in most countries in the west and they're already trying to purge us from libraries.

in the latest cyber-news: the internet archive has lost their case against 4 major publishing houses (verge article). they’re going to appeal, but this is still a bad outcome. the fate of the internet is currently hanging in the balance because 4 multibillionare publishing groups missed out on like $15 of combined revenue during the pandemic because of the archive’s online library service. it’s so fucking stupid.
for those who don’t know what the internet archive is, it’s a virtual library full of media. books, magazines, recordings, visuals, flash games, websites - a lot of these things either don’t exist anymore or cannot be found & bought. heard of the wayback machine? that’s part of the internet archive. it is the most important website to exist, and i don’t say that lightly. if the internet archive goes down, the cultural loss will be immeasurable.
so how can you help?
boycott the publishing companies involved in this. they’re absolute ghouls, frankly, and don’t deserve a penny. the companies involved are harpercollins (imprints), wiley (imprints), penguin random house llc (imprints), and hachette book group (imprints). make sure the websites are set to your location as it may differ worldwide.
learn to torrent. download a torrent client (i recommend transmission), a vpn (i recommend protonvpn - sign up and choose the area that’s closest to your continent/country), and hit up /r/piracy on reddit for websites. with torrenting, you can get (almost) any media you want for free in high quality, with add-ons such as subtitles, and with no risks of loss. i would also recommend getting into the habit of watching stuff online for free. the less you can pay to a giant corporation, the better.
get into the habit of downloading and archiving materials. find a TB external hard drive, ideally the higher the better. it’ll probably cost around $60 for 1TB and continue to go up, but they’re so so useful. if you can’t afford a drive, look for any GB harddrives or memory sticks you have lying around and just fill them up. videos, pdfs, magazines, songs, movies, games - anything you can rip and download and fit on there, do it, because nothing is permanent.
donate to the internet archive. this is the most important option on the list. the IA relies entirely on funding, and it’s going to need more to fight this case. whatever you can donate, do it. i promise it’s helpful.
and finally…

"Irish doesn't have a word for please, you have to say if it be your will" buddy do I have news for you about "please"
"Irish doesn't have a word for hello you have to use a shorthand religious blessing" buddy do I have news for you about "goodbye"!
"In Polish the word for car is that which walks by itself" BUDDY what do you think an AUTOMOBILE is?
you have got to understand that your mother tongue is not the model of language. all your words have secret histories and layers of meaning just the same as other people's words. the word you think of as just a word has etymology, it wasn't handed down from God as a finished word. English doesn't have a word for movie you have to either refer to the recording medium or use a short version of "moving picture", isn't that cute?

advanced learner’s toolbox: spanish
a lot of the resource lists that are out there are generally geared towards beginners, which makes sense. more advanced learners + native speakers have already used these resources and can vouch for them, whereas if you’re an advanced learner you’ve probably already stumbled upon some of these already. that said, i figured i would compile my favorites here :)
diccionario de la lengua española, also known as the rae dictionary. it’s probably the most referenced dictionary in spanish
diccionario panhispánico de dudas, another resource from la rae, meant to handle specific common doubts within the language
corpus de referencia del español actual (crea), a linguistic corpus. i personally like using this to find examples of words and phrases. it contains examples from the last 25 years so you can have up to date examples
corpus diacrónico del español (corde), another linguistic corpus, but for examples from the beginning of the language up until 1974. both of these corpuses are a little clunky, but they do the job well
bonus: if you’re looking for a corpus from a specific country, look up the website for the academia (nationality) de la lengua and you’ll usually find a corpus from that specific country. examples: corpus del habla del ecuador, corpus diacrónico y diatópico del español de américa, you can even see a corpus from learners of the language: corpus de aprendices de español
wordreference, a forum for language use. whenever i have a specific question, i look up the phrase in question + ‘wordreference’ and i’m able to get opinions from different countries and not just the rae opinion
asihablamos, which is basically urban dictionary but in spanish, but unfortunately not as large. still, a helpful resource for learning slang from different countries. you can even sort by country!
fundeu, a site that does some more niche grammar and usage explanations. its whole bit is that it does more current usage questions, like this one on gaslighting
español avanzado, a site like the fundeu that explains random advanced grammar topics. i rank it below fundeu though because of the paywall.
biblioteca digital ciudad seva, aka my professors’ favorite site in undergrad. full of short stories and poetry in spanish, both originally written in spanish and translated.
católogo de voces hispánicas, these are just linguistic descriptions of different dialects of spanish both in spain and latin america. i’ve always found it pretty cool to look at, but if you’re looking to imitate a certain way of speaking check here!
and that’s it! if you’re already at this stage i’m assuming you know how to find interesting content (if not, let me know! i love finding media recommendations in spanish for people) <3

“A Sanskrit grammatical problem which has perplexed scholars since the 5th Century BC has been solved by a University of Cambridge PhD student.
Rishi Rajpopat, 27, decoded a rule taught by Panini, a master of the ancient Sanskrit language who lived around 2,500 years ago.
Sanskrit is mostly spoken in India by an estimated 25,000 people, the university said.
Mr Rajpopat said he had “a eureka moment in Cambridge” after spending nine months “getting nowhere”.”

wanted to share this article. it writes of how most curated lists of indian literature have books written in english to begin with, but that only 10% of the population of india speaks english. in light of this, it recommends translations of classic literature written in other languages of india, like assamese, hindi, malayalam, marathi, bangla. i will certainly be referring to this list myself
