I know people hate the cheating trope, but let's see if I convince you:

Trilogy

MC has Love Interest A and Best Friend B in book one, where it's very obvious to the reader but not as much to the MC(cuz they're not that... bright) that B has like the hugest crush on MC.

In book two, clearly between A and the MC it ain't working no more and MC starts developing feelings for B. And the cheating is MC x B. MC breaks up with A by the end of the book.

In book three, B is the endgame love interest.

AND I EVEN SQUEEZE IN ONLY ONE BED TROPE FOR BOOK TWO.

I think the real reason I am a staunchly stancy over jancy is that Nancy is so mistreated in season 1 and Steve is the only character to actually truly apologize to her. And I’m not even talking about the photographs.

Everyone, every character at one point or another, in season 1 is shamming Nancy for having sex (including nancy herself). But the narrative seems to validate it when it’s coming from certain characters and when it’s in the subtext. Barb and Jonathan continuing to insist that Nancy wasn’t acting like herself that night at Steve’s is never challenged. But when they’re saying ‘this isn’t you’, theres this pervasive subtext of ‘you’re not supposed to be a slut’. Steve was wrong and shitty for what he did, absolutely, no argument. Tommy and Carol remain absolute trash for their involvement. But at least when Steve slutshames her, he tries to make amends and apologizes for it.

It’s always rubbed me the wrong way that Jonathan and Barb are just treated like they’re right about Nancy and right for telling Nancy that essential she doesn’t know what she wants and that she’s wrong for wanting to have sex. Meanwhile, when Nancy’s internalized misogyny jumps out and she insists that she’s not like the other girls Steve’s had sex with, he’s the one who calls it out, ‘what you’re really saying is you’re not a slut’. It doesn’t exist in the subtext, Steve addresses it. And Steve has to redeem himself for his treatment of her (which, again, he absolutely should), but no one else does because it’s hidden in this subtext of Nancy being ‘better than that’ where that is the crime having sex.

Also to be clear, this isn’t a ‘therefore Jonathan is bad and problematic and doesn’t deserve Nancy’ post because these are characters and not real people. It just always frustrated me narratively how Nancy is treated in the early seasons and what Jancy being together represents thematically because of it. The implication that Jonathan is the one who really understands her and sees through her ‘acting not like herself’ when she’s having sex just narratively reaffirms the idea that she shouldn’t have because she’s ‘not a slut’.
