[Halloween Series; Week 4: Killers of Horror] [Jame Gumb AKA “Buffalo Bill” from Silence of the Lambs (1991); played by Ted Levine]

Most people remember Silence of the Lambs for the iconic Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter or Jodie Foster as the heroic Clarice Starling, and rightfully so, the film swept the Oscars and became an instant classic.

However, the truly horrifying performance by Ted Levine as Buffalo Bill so often gets brushed by the wayside, and that is a travesty. Buffalo Bill is unhinged, a serial killer inspired by the likes of Ted Bundy and Ed Gein, and when watching him you are constantly on edge, unsure of what he might do next. Jame Gumb, the man dubbed Buffalo Bill, believes himself to be transgender, but he is not. This is a false conclusion of his sick mind, coveting what he sees but unable to classify himself as what he truly is: a monster, on the verge of transformation. The character makes people uncomfortable, both then and now, but the portrayal stands as legendary to this day, making him a character worth remembering. Just make sure you put the lotion in the basket.
