Updated designs for a few characters we have already introduced/remade! Re-introducing Koda (fellow in the middle) and Kenai's mom, Yuka, on the right.
The beautiful lady on the left is Nita! She's a new-ish character we're introducing! She's a healer-in-training and spends a lot of time working with Kenai's mom on various things like housework, gathering, and beading! Nita is very spontaneous and has a fiery personality. (And yes, she's another Brother Bear reference lol).

How would you compare Hanami with other female Avatars like Yangchen, Kyoshi, and Korra?
Hanami is vastly different than all three of them, in my opinion. I think a few of them share similarities though!
Yangchen, Kyoshi, and Korra were among the more serious/mature Avatars in my opinion. Korra started off a bit immature, considering she didn't focus on anything spiritual at first, but she grew over the course of the series so I'm specifically looking at Korra at the end of the show.
Hanami and Yangchen's similarities stop at the fact they're both airbenders and they were both pretty eager to make a difference as Avatars. Hanami's demeanor and story are much different than Yangchen's, so I think given the fact they're both similarly placed in war-torn situations, the outcomes are vastly different in my own opinion.
Hanami and Kyoshi are... More similar than I'd expect. Both are determined to do whatever means necessary to bring peace or justice. They're both susceptible to doing extremes or going to extremes to ensure things are brought to justice, and quite honestly... That's a little scary lol. (Hanami is an Aries Rising... If you know, you know)
Now, Korra and Hanami both start out rather impulsive and immature to the spiritual side of being the Avatar. They both kind of take these journeys of spirituality alone without much guidance. However, I think Hanami is just a bit more determined to seek out her spiritual side than Korra was. Hanami grew up wanting to be the spiritual leader of her tribe, but just struggled to connect with that side of herself. So, their roles and stories are vastly different on how they go toward those goals.

How do Oma and Shu fit into this story? They're the ones who developed the style of earthbending so do they or one of Oma's students teach Hanami?
We do not touch on Oma and Shu right at this moment. I'm unsure if they'd even fit into our storyline since Hanami's story takes place further northwest than where Omashu will one day be built. Also, as someone who studied history (I have a history degree), I personally find the Oma and Shu story to be more of a myth/folk legend than actual truth. I think the story derives on some factual basis, but I don't think they were the very first earthbenders ever or the first ones to develop earthbending as an art.
Each region clearly has their own style of bending (like the Sun Warriors opposed to the modern Fire Nation, Foggy Swamp Tribe to the Water Tribes, etc.) so it's highly possible these regions have their own lore/history on how the style or the art itself was developed.
But that's more of a personal headcanon than anything factual! Hanami learns earthbending from the Lava People, who's earthbending is based on a martial art style called Lua (a Hawaiian martial art style) and Mau rākau (a Maori weapon martial art style). So they're vastly different from the traditional earthbending arts we see during Aang and Korra's times.
I hope that makes sense!

What's Hanami's relationship like with each of her friends, how does her personality mesh with theirs?
Without giving too much away, I'll try and keep it simple.
Hanami and Kenai: They get along really well! Since they're the first two to basically form Team Avatar, they go through a lot together from the beginning to end. They have a super strong bond, though I think Hanami adds a lot to Kenai's anxiety because of her impulsiveness... Poor Kenai.
Hanami and Nekhii: They have a bit of a different bond due to Nekhii's grandfather being Wan's only remaining friend alive. Nekhii is a bit of a Wan fanboy, so he really admires Hanami's role as the Avatar, and wants to be super close like his grandfather and Wan were. They're pretty much two peas in a pod, though they lack... Many braincells when they're together.
Hanami and Homura: Surprisingly, they also get along pretty well. Hanami reminds Homura of her younger sister, and the two of them joke around/do a lot of bantering with one another. Granted, Homura and Hanami have their moments of not meshing well, but Homura's a pretty big personality and so is Hanami, plus they're on opposite ends of many spectrums. It's bound to happen.
Hanami and Da Xia: Da and Hanami are close in a sense that Da's problematic behavior acts as an enabler for Hanami's gullibility. Can Da make Hanami do stupid things? Absolutely. However, Da would never intentionally do anything to put Hanami or themself in harm's way. Da just thinks Hanami's a funny lil guy.
Hanami and Nukilik: To be quite honest, there's not a ton there since Hanami and Nukilik are a bit different/polar opposites. What can be said is that Hanami really admires Nukilik, and vice versa. They're understanding and respect one another immensely.

Hi, I'm a huge fan of your work and I love everything Avatar! I'm sorry if this has been asked before but I was just wondering how close until chapter 1 gets released? I wish you all the best of luck.
Thank you so much! As of right now, we are not putting any release dates out there. We're currently still structuring Book 2, but we want to have the entirety of the story plotted and solidified before we begin the physical comic.

One of the things I loved about LoK was we got to see the villains go through their own character arc: just one example of this would be how both Zaheer and Kuvira initially believed they could destroy/overpower the Avatar, but in the end they both concluded the Avatar's power greatly surpassed theirs, and they gave up opposing the Avatar. Do you plan to have your villains go through a similar kind of transformation?
I think the best way I can put this without hinting at or putting out spoilers... We have a few occurrences that Hanami's role as the Avatar plays in to face troubling individuals. Do they always happen to work out? We'll have to see. But I think these situations are very fitting to her time and I think will be a pleasant surprise for a lot of you!

How long until Hanami's lack of focus drives Wan mad?
I think ya'll will quickly come to learn that both of them are equally as unfocused and confused—I also wholeheartedly confirm that Wan isn't a spiritual/wise mentor... He's got his moments BUT he drives Hanami mad just as much as she does him. XD

In the Yangchen novels we got to see an insider's POV on the Avatar State. How Yangchen's thoughts and feelings in the Avatar State were so different from how she normally felt, but that was just one perspective. Since every Avatar is different they must all have their own unique experiences of what it's like to be in the Avatar State. I was wondering if you're going to highlight how Hanami feels when she's in the Avatar State?
Yes! We'll cover a lot of that actually later in the comic! We have a lot of ideas and plans to look into the Avatar State and the beginning of the cycle.

Since Hanami doesn't fit in with the other airbenders, due to her ADHD, when it becomes known she is the Avatar will her tribe resent her because they believe she isn't worthy of the role?
Nope! Hanami is the first Avatar to be reincarnated, so no one—not even her—knows what the Avatar is. Some people knew Wan, but his name wasn't widespread. So, her tribe doesn't resent her, some of the elders think she's a bit different but there's not any resentment or hatred toward her!

It's been a while since you guys have posted. Is there anything new lately?
I'm afraid not, but I'm slowly trying to get back into things when I can! School and life have been a lot at the moment so no major updates as of right now. I hope I'll have some soon though~

Another question on Da Xia and Aiguo, did their dad take multiple wives or serial monogamy (like Aiguo’s mom died after giving birth to him or divorced and took another wife who would become Da Xia’s mom)?
Their dad took multiple wives. Two of his wives are political marriages while one marriage is one he pursued out of love. The Sun Warriors are open to just about any way of life, so if someone wanted to take multiple wives, and as long as all parties consented, it's fair game.

If there one reason I was happy for the spirit world and the real world to be permanently united, it would be because of him.
I agree. The Aye-Aye Spirit was iconic and we deserved more time with him.
I can make this happen...

I wanted to share an idea I had. What do you think about the Great Comet (a.k.a Sozin's Comet) appearing in Hanami's lifetime? Since the Sun Warriors are based off the Mayans I imagine they'll be good at astronomy and predict the Comet's arrival and once they realise it enhances their firebending they'll start a ritual festival celebrating it. The Lava people could also transfer the energy they absorb from the Comet into the ground so the land is revitalised. What do you think?
I know I've done math for this, and if I remember correctly, Sozin's Comet doesn't appear until either before Hanami is born or after... We had this conversation a while back, like several years ago of what ifs and Sozin's Comet is a thing that is celebrated by groups in the Fire Isles!
We never went into great detail because it won't appear in the timeline of the comic, but there's definitely traditions surrounding the comet in various groups!
I also really like the emphasis on the Lava People and their practicality in using it for agriculture/land revitalization! That was a great touch!

Will there be any flashback on funeral for Aiguo? Maybe showing Sun Warriors' funeral customs and how much of it Fire Nation kept.
It's been discussed! I do want to incorporate a lot of the Sun Warrior traditions and such, so we'll see. If we don't have this specific scene, I can assure you that we have a good chunk of time where we show off the Sun Warriors. 😂

On Wan's bio it says he was "struck down with his own sword by an unlikely enemy" and then says he was "Left for dead". Is this implying he was betrayed by someone he trusted?
You'll have to wait and find out. I don't give out spoilers~

So how do you draw motion so well? I’ve always struggled with that and your drawings of it are just so good
You can hate me for saying this because I too used to hate it... but I practice. A lot. I cannot express how from 2019-2021, I continuously drew Hanami, the characters, and other things to expand my style and also challenge myself with poses/stances.
If you're referring to our most recent post as well—that was actually a collaboration between me and one of our artists, Ren. Ren is amazing at creating and drawing sketches of various poses and I only did the lineart + color.
However, it really boils down to finding/cultivating poses. And one thing I've learned a lot in the last 4 years, specifically about Hanami, is that she's constantly moving and on the go. She has some really fun and eccentric posing that speaks well to her personality and how she is as a person. So being able to keep up with her hyperactive-ness in posing is a big point I had to nail down before we begin to work on the physical comic.
So yeah... I'm afraid it's just a lot of practice and going outside your comfort zone. This last drawing I had assistance though, so I wouldn't count that one.
