“Kid, I think everyone is full of shit until they prove me otherwise.” He stated honestly, raising his eyebrows at the question and searching his face.  He didn’t see the spite, which was good to work with, but to say he wasn’t mildly annoyed would be a lie.  Newer generations always questioned the older, he’d seen that enough, hell, he’d done that.  It was always rough to deal with new hunters, though.  “Which ones?  The new wave of hunters don’t.  They try to understand every damn thing about it - that kills them half the damn time.  Sometimes you don’t have time to interrogate a damn demon on why it’s possessing that person, you have to do what you can to save people.  Us older hunters?  We didn’t have access to the shit you have, to the connections and shit.  We had hunters bars, and when the thing is staring you down, ready to kill you because you’re another hunter?  Fuck, it’s that or you don’t go home that night.”

Another pause , before a soft smile spread on her face. “ He doesn’t like being told what to do..but..he respects what i tell him and honestly that’s all i ask of him. He’s growing up..being a kid that’s ..well…not normal in any sense. It’s hard for him but..we can just do our best to give them the tools to survive out there. For you it was …well making your kids into soldiers…for me it was…sheltering him for too long. Which is why..you know..he likes to..run away” 

“No, I know how much of that is my damn fault.” It was, but it wasn’t.  They hadn’t planned for a second kid with the relationship problems they’d been having, but when Mary had become pregnant?  He’d felt pain and joy and fear - he’d promised he’d be a better partner.  Too bad it didn’t entirely work out like that.  Alistair had been sure to inform him of a few things to try to break him down, to try to bring him down in despair.  Some things he’d blocked out, but a few things remained, and the sense that if he’d gotten a damn vasectomy, maybe some of this wouldn’t have happened.  If the forces didn’t find a damn way around it- which they seemed determined to get what they wanted.  “Some questions just don’t have answers, Call.” The conversation with Sam was fresh on his mind, the questions he wanted answered.  “Not unless you deal with the assholes behind everything - and even then, they’re quiet.”

“Trust me, if he’s anything like me, no matter what he’s going through, or fighting authority, mom wins out.” Crossing his arms, he gave a huff of a laugh.  “When she’s all you’ve got, and she’s a strong figure, like you, you learn to depend on it.  I had to check on my mother when I got back - couldn’t visit, not that she knows I even died, but - I checked.  I love that woman more than anyone else I’ve met, and she had to deal with me disappearing regularly.  Let him run a little, as long as he does it safely.”

This isn’t anything he’s enjoying in the least.  It took a minute to notice the differences, at first, things just felt off.  Felt strange.  Something out of the corner of his eye seeming wrong, but his attention was on the one in front of him.  The large man who had brought up not harming him, something that screamed veiled threat- even if it didn’t seem to be.  The young man was defensive, and he couldn’t even deny it. 

Gaze narrowing, he crossed his arms, chin lifting.  ‘What the fuck are you talking about?”  He nearly demanded, but the edge to his voice was more wary - careful.  He knew his strength was in weapons if this went strange, but he didn’t have any on him that he was aware of.  “If this is about the damn army, I’m out.  Did the godddamn time I had to and did pretty damn well.  You here to help dodge a draft or some shit?”

"She's a damn busybody that means well. Can't not go therapist voice when she's around you, or trying to fix something that doesn't need talked about- but she's a good woman. She's stuck around the family despite - all this shit. Hell, she's a good time too, when you can get her to stop talking therapy, and a glass of wine in and the right looks? She's the kind of woman to make you forget your damn problems for awhile, even if it's just going into the damn bedroom. That's not therapy but it definitely makes me feel better. Have you seen those legs? Goddamn. A good friend, or whatever the fuck we are now. Couldn't imagine not having her around in my life."

His son, his baby boy, the troublemaker. "He's too damn much like Mary. He's got her fight, and her sense, and her temper. It's insane how he can drive me insane and want to push the boy away, but also keep him safe and around me." He chuckles weakly, running his hand down his face. "Most other hunters I would run into on the field like that? I'd punch them in the damn face, but Sam can get away with saying the worst shit to me and I- well, goddamn, sometimes I'm impressed. He'll take me to task and be fucking right, and I won't admit it, but he's right. Kid is intelligent and makes me fucking realize why I'm doing what I'm doing, fucking wishing I had some of the sense he did. I just didn't want him to end up with the same damn traumas that take over your life, but here we fucking are. What do I think? I think that despite how fucked up things were, and how badly I fucking did, he turned out into an amazing damn hunter and good guy."
