Hey, I'm John! 27 |Utah|I’m obsessed with climbing, the outdoors and learning about people! Using my blog to document my journey as a rock climber Follow me on instagram!Instagram.com/johnguyen
Broke my leg skiing today :( incredibly bummed about it as I was so close to my 100 day goal and just when I was transitioning to climbing again too. Better than my ACL I suppose 🤷🏻♂️. Not what I needed right now but I’ll get through it..
Got to ice climb for the first time this weekend at All In Ice Festival and it was way too fun! Not only was the experience mega thrilling but getting to meet so many wonderful people added to the experience. It was awesome to be in a space filled with BIPOC and queer folks, since it’s such a white male dominated sport. So stoked to go again next year
Earlier this month I got hired by my friends to guide and teach them how to trad climb and multipitch and it was such a rewarding time. I love getting women into the trad climbing world because it’s so male dominated! It was inspiring to see how strong they were mentally and physically. Felt really honored that they trusted me to teach them the skills to trad climb safely.
Ended the trip with one of the best boulders I’ve ever done. I LOVE “easy” climbing with some spice added as it creates a fun experience for me. I ended up running 3 laps on it just because it was so enjoyable to me
Extremely bummed that my Indian Creek season has come to an end since I’ll be going back to Virginia for Thanksgiving. By the time I come back to Utah, the days are so short and I think it’d be miserably cold, plus I’m eager to ski!
I’m proud of myself for what I’ve accomplished out there in the last month. I spent a total of 10 days there, which isn’t a ton by any means but I was able to get a lot done. Going into the season, I had goals to get my first 5.12 on gear as well as getting mileage on 11’s. Despite no 5.12 send (I’m a scaredy cat), I was able to knock out 10 5.11’s! I’m proud of myself that the 11’s I did were not strictly thin hands, but also involved some bigger jams. I wanted to make sure that I could do a range of sizes minus offwidth haha. Managed to flash/onsight all but 1 route! For the spring season, I plan on getting on 11+ and some 12’s since I feel so comfy on 11’s!
Pictures is me on Crack Attack 5.11-, one of my favorite creek routes due to the variety!
Happy about finding beta for this that flowed really well, love anything tensiony and requires toe hooks! With this beta, I could do 4 laps back to back
I spent the last week at Ten Sleep, Wyoming because I got fired/laid off recently. Absolutely loved it there as the sport climbing was chill and fun! Running right through the canyon and our camping area is Tensleep Creek, so naturally as a lover of the outdoors and Formula 1, I saw an opportunity to recreate Valtteri Bottas’s iconic photo and went for it haha.
Sorry yall have to see this but I’m seeing the benefits from running twice a week!
