Let me break it down

(Please read this Loki theory I spent a lot of time on this)

Loki and Thanos have history together (Thanos masterminds the entire New York attack). Thanos knows how Loki operates and knows not to trust him.

So the question: Why the fuck would Loki try to pledge his allegiance then try to attack Thanos with a butter knife 0.0004 seconds later?

Because Loki needed to remove himself from the picture.

Alive, Thanos knows what a huge asset Loki would be to the avengers, with his knowledge of Thanos’s operation and his own natural cunning.

Dead, Thanos won’t give two shits about Loki or any damage he could possibly cause.

Why would Loki need this level of incognito?

BECAUSE HE’S LOOKING FOR THE EGO STONE!!!!!

While under Thanos Loki probably heard all about the Infinity Stone. It makes sense that Loki would have heard rumors about the ego stone but because it wasn’t necessary for The Snap™️ Thano’s people didn’t look into it.

Another important question often asked: WHERE? THE FUCK?? WAS VALKYRIE?!?!? Or Korg?

Answer: Helping Loki escape!!

And why wasn’t Thor in on this scheme?

Not quite whump exactly, possibly more fanon than anything else, but I love all the little scenes in Avengers that imply that Loki’s connection with the Chitauri was not pleasant or friendly, but rather… painful. And all the threats and general mistrust that lead you to think why were they working together in the first place?

You know what makes me sad as fuck? We know that Loki isn't Asgardian. We know Loki isn't even a full god. Therefore, when he died in Infinity War, he was neglected the access to Valhalla. He didn't disperse in sparkly yellow light, he died just like a mortal, just like the demigod he is. So even if Thor was to die in a future movie, the two brothers still wouldn't be reunited.
