Depiction of love Ft. Indian Cinema.
There are just so many variations of the perception of love across the cultures around thee world, but let us dive into Indian perception through these Bollywood films. The featured movies are The Sky is Pink, Ok Jaanu, and October (from top to bottom).
Now everybody knows that internet is filled with content which says that love is not a bed of roses but rather of thorns, but as a 90s kid, who has grown up watching romantic movies where there is typical hero-heroine battling against heroine's egoistic and villainous father trope, I would like to share how Bollywood's perception of a love story has changed over the course of time and these movies, may or may not have done well on the box office, but surely has been an evidence for the same.
The Sky is Pink, starring Priyanka Chopra and Farhan Akhtar, starts off as a story about a family which is of 4 members and the daughter of the family (named Aisha, played by Zaira Wasim), being the most beloved and the light of the family, is suffering from SCID (Severe and Combined Immunodeficiency disease) which is, apparently, life threatening.
Now the family has a son too, played by Rohit Saraf, who necessarily does not contribute to the movie's plot, and hence, the movie mostly revolves around the mother, the father and the daughter. And later on after Aisha's death, the movie is mostly about the couple, figuring out how to deal with Aisha's death, absence and hollowness her death created in their relationship. For the most part, this movie is believed to be about Aisha and her struggles with the SCID, but in a broader perspective, it is about a couple figuring out life, love, relationship, decisions for their daughter, and apparently each other under stressful situations.
While throwing light on Ok Jaanu (the second picture), it is a movie about typical adrenaline junkies, Adi and Tara (played by Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor) who hate the idea of settling down and marriages and rather sticking to one person for their entire lives, but after having spending time with each other and flourishing in each other's presence and obviously falling in love with not just each other, but literally with the dynamics that they both have cultivated. Bollywood speculated the idea of live-in relationships with this movie and blatantly dumping the idea of love at first sight.
October, being the closest to me of all three, typically is not a love story like the other two mentioned in this blog, but maybe a story about love. Dan and Shiuli (played by Varun Dhawan and Banita Sandhu) are colleagues and also classmates who have graduated a hotel management school together, develop an attraction towards each other which was not yet confessed by either of them, but they enjoyed each other's company. However, the tragedy occurs on the night of new year's eve when Shiuli loses balance, in an attempt to sit on the edge of the terrace where the party was organised, and accidently falls off of it.
This leads to her being in a comatose state. Now, for Dan, it was remarkable that before meeting with an accident, Shiuli specifically asked about where he was and why is not he at the party. When Dan learnt about her accident, he decides to stay with her until she regains her consciousness and comes out of the coma, only to tell her where was he on that new year's eve when she asked for him. Now if that is not a love with devotion for you, I don't know what is.
