“all those little lies just make the truth feel worse.”

"Oh, don't start."
Sometimes anger is like friction, like static electricity, prickling on the skin and waiting to spark.
Mary sets her glass down on the coffee table, steps away, feels the breeze from the open patio door ruffle her hair and her clothes. Disgust mixes with the irritation mixes with the uppers and the antipsychotics and the liquor in her bloodstream like the world's most implosive cocktail.
"You pick and you pick and you pick at me, all fuckin' night." She presses both her hands to her face and then scrapes her palms back through her curls, back turned to Zsasz. Her therapist in Arkham — sad, nervous man, big glasses, like a drawing of a mole in a children's book — tells her she needs to separate herself from situations. Count to 10. Walk away. Turn the other cheek.
She's too confrontational for this advice to ever stick.
"You know what?" she says after a beat, and spins on her heel to look at Zsasz again, gesturing with one index finger. "You're obsessed with telling everyone else how they're lying to themselves. And maybe I am, but God, at least I have an ounce of self awareness. At least I'm not so Goddamn smug and self-righteous that I can't figure out when I don't like the truth."

A pause. Mary watches the lights go past over the highway. It's not guilt, this feeling. One life to save her own. Hamlet had said it. Why, this is hire and salary, not revenge. It is, instead the hiring that sparks a vague discomfort in Mary Dahl; the idea that she will owe River anything after this pricks at the nape of her neck.
"A million," she says, and nods once to confirm it. "Good."
Coming back down the expressway and into the underground extinguishes the light for one breathless beat before it returns as a thin fluorescent running parallel to the asphalt. Mary settles back in her seat, wipes some imagined speck from her cheek, scrapes her hair back with her fingertips.
"We'll drop you home. How will you let me know when it's done?"
Sounds like she's got that base covered well enough... A single head it is, then. But tiny pebbles of mild disappointment well upon her chest, nonetheless. It's unavoidable really. One less life is one less payment, is one less nefarious purchase from those darkest reaches of the city's underbelly.
Ah well... Best direct focus to the task that's confirmed at-hand. Mary doesn't like it when she catches her mind drifting wayward.
"Have I ever disappointed you? Aside from in social situations, I mean."
Tumblr media
"I'll do it for the million you were 'supposed' to give him, I find the irony of it all kinds of hilarious. If you want, I'll even tell him you'd found a better way to spend your money as he breathes his very last!"
One long leg crosses the other, River shrugs. "What do you say, Mary-dear, sound good?"

She turns on her heel and makes for the door with the brazen confidence of someone used to everyone else matching her pace, or — at the very least — used to demanding it of them. The air outside is crisp, the street a transient kind of busy. All cast-down eyes and hurried, purposeful steps, the skittering behaviour of Gotham's survivors.
Mary looks at the car idling by the kerb. The driver looks back at her. He's only a vague silhouette behind the tinted glass, but she sees him nod at her, rest one palm on the wheel. "Drivin' or walkin'?" she asks Basil, scraping her hair back from her face with the tips of her fingers. "You said you wanted the air."
He merely snorts. Mary held her liquor damn near as well as he did, and that was saying quite a lot given both matters of their drastic size difference and his own generally wacky physiology. The cane he's carrying drops from the crook of one arm and subsequently unfolds with a bright, sharp shink, its end settling on the weathered wood of the bar floor. Hell, he'd have let her touch him without complaint. She was about the only person who could get away with it, anyhow. Basil has known her for long enough to pick up on that energy in an instant. He motions towards the entrance with a hand; there's enough of a chill coming in through the poorly-patched crack in the window so as for him to feel it. "What a coincidence, my dear. So do I." There's something unnerving about his smile, and maybe there always has been. "Now, shall we officially take our leave? I find it's getting a tad stuffy in here."

MAKEOVER :  for one muse to help the other with a new outfit or hairstyle
(in honor of mary’s birthday ❤️)
Tumblr media
scenario sentence starters | still accepting.
"Your music sucks," Mary declares, with all the snottiness of someone half her age, and reaches across the vanity to snag the bottle of deep purple nail polish.
The peeling label says Royal in cracked gold lettering; she shakes it haphazardly in one hand, the other tapping fingertip-light at Tiffany's arm near her temple. "Don't melt my hair off."
It feels like playing dress-up doll. Porcelain skin and nylon hair.
Mary feels the curling iron heat close to the crown of her head, sets the nail polish down, taps her still unpainted fingernails on the tabletop in time with the thrumming music. The ring of yellow bulbs around the mirror reflect back on the whites of her eyes.
"You're bein' sweet to me, huh?" Mary's fingertips snag Tiffany's sleeve; there's a possessive little note to the gesture, the kind of entitlement that colours almost everything Mary does. A giggle bubbles its way out of her throat. "Or you just feel sorry for me."
