EPILOGUE
“You look so beautiful,” Jane said. “Alec will be speechless.
I laughed softly at her kind words, meeting her eyes in the mirror. Heidi was putting the finishing touches on my hair. She carefully threaded the sprigs of baby’s breath flowers through the two braids that were pulled back behind my head, almost like a crown. The rest of my hair fell down my back in gentle waves.
“You really are gorgeous,” Heidi agreed as she brushed a loose curl away from my cheek.
“Do you think I’m ready, then?” I asked.
They both nodded and I stood, smoothing my hands over the skirt of my dress anxiously.
I was wearing a cream-white satin dress with a cowl neckline. Thin straps went over my shoulders and crossed along my back. The dress was long enough that the bottom hem just barely brushed along the ground when I was standing in my cream-colored heels, and it had a thigh-high slit on the right side. The way the dress perfectly hugged my curves made me feel incredibly attractive and I knew that Alec was going to absolutely love it.
“Do you think you’re ready?” Jane asked. I turned towards her and nodded. We shared a smile and she handed me a bouquet of white calla lilies, asphodel, and orange blossoms.
“Well then, let’s not keep that mate of yours waiting,” Heidi teased.
She slipped out of the room ahead of us to ensure that everything else was ready. Alec and I had chosen to have our wedding ceremony in the courtyard of the castle. The entire guard, the kings, and their wives would be in attendance. Neither Alec or I had wanted a big wedding, but everyone in the castle was family, and that was more than enough for us. As soon as we told Heidi that we wanted to get married, she instantly jumped into planning the ceremony with her mate, Corin. Alec and I were happy to leave all of the planning to the two women, since all we really cared about was actually getting married.
Jane slipped her arm through mine and we walked through the halls of the castle.
“I am very happy that you and Alec found each other,” Jane said quietly. “You have brought out the very best in each other, and I’ve never seen my brother as happy as he has been with you. . . . You were truly made for each other.”
“Thank you,” I murmured. “And I hope you don’t mind that I’ve begun to think of you as a sister.”
Jane smiled at me. She teased, “You are literally going to become my sister in a few minutes.”
We laughed together as we finally reached the doors to the courtyard. Jane leaned close to kiss my cheek before she slipped out of the doors. I took a deep breath and waited for a moment before I entered the courtyard.
Everyone was standing, watching with warm smiles as I walked down the aisle, but my eyes were only focused on Alec.
My soulmate was wearing a perfectly tailored, light grey suit with a white dress shirt beneath. He didn’t wear any kind of tie at my request, since I thought he looked more attractive without one.
When my eyes finally flickered up to his face, I saw that he was staring at me with a soft smile on his face, his gaze exuding pure love and admiration. The way he looked at me — as if I was the only person to have ever existed — filled my chest with warmth.
I glided down the aisle in time with the quiet violin music. Alec held his hand out to me when I was close enough and I eagerly took it. Heidi quickly snatched my bouquet from my hands just before I took the final step to the altar. She returned to her seat, holding the flowers delicately in her lap. Alec took my free hand so that he was now holding both of my hands.
‘You are so beautiful,’ Alec murmured in my mind. ‘My gorgeous, sweet girl. . . . I love you so much.’
‘I love you, too, Alec. My wonderful mate.’
We grinned at each other, then glanced at Aro as he began to speak.
“My dearest ones, we have gathered today to witness our beloved Alec and wonderful Eve unify their lives for the rest of their existence. They have chose to join together in marriage, to have a celebration of their love and loyalty and commitment to each other. They have endured through the challenges and obstacles that were placed before them, but we all know that true love always wins in the end.”
Aro looked at my mate. “Alec, do you come here today to marry Eve, and to join your path in life with hers?”
“I do,” he answered, looking into my eyes. He squeezed my hands gently.
“Eve, do you come here today to marry Alec, and to join your path in life with his?”
“I do,” I said. Alec’s lips twitched up into a soft smile and I breathed out a quiet laugh.”
“Alec and Eve have chose to tie their lives together in a hand-fasting ceremony,” Aro announced. “If you would please raise your hands up, my dears.”
We turned so that we were standing beside each other. We raised our clasped hands up between us, extending them towards Aro. He produced a long, red silk ribbon from his suit pocket.
“Alec, Eve, will you be each other’s faithful partner for eternity and be each other’s constant friend and one true love?”
“We will,” we said together.
Aro wrapped the ribbon around our hands once. “And so the first binding is made. Do you promise to love each other without reservation, to always stand united against any challenges you may face?”
“We do.”
“And so the second binding is made. Will you stand together in time of joy and of sorrow, and share the burdens of each other?”
“We will.”
“And so the third binding is made. Will you honor each other, and seek to cherish and strengthen that honor?”
“We will.”
Aro wrapped the ribbon around our hands one last time and tied it in an elegant knot.
“And so the final binding is made. The knots of this binding are not formed by this ribbon, but instead by your vows. . . . Alec, Eve, I am pleased to announce that you are now husband and wife. One flesh, one heart, one soul. Now, and forevermore.”
Alec pulled me close, his free hand on my waist, and kissed me fiercely while everyone cheered and clapped for us. I laughed against his mouth and reached up with my free hand to caress his cheek. We pulled apart a few moments later to face our guests. We walked back down the aisle together, our hands still tied.
We slipped out of the courtyard to wait patiently as Heidi ordered a few other guards around, transforming the courtyard from a wedding ceremony into a reception venue.
Alec pressed me against the stone wall, his lips claiming mine passionately. I giggled, but I still wrapped my free arm around his neck and pulled him closer. His arm slipped around my waist to gently tug me against his body.
“My beautiful wife,” Alec whispered against my lips.
I giggled and replied, “My handsome husband.”
POSTFACE
I asked Persephone,
“How could you grow to love him?
He took you from flowers to a kingdom
where not a single living thing can grow.”
Persephone smiled,
“My darling, every flower on your earth withers.
What Hades gave me was a crown
made for the immortal flowers in my bones.”

25. VERDICT
Chelsea was the first. She attempted to weaken the familial bonds between the Cullens, but her eyes widened in shock after a moment.
‘I can’t find them,’ she told us. ‘It’s as if they’re not there.’
I replied, ‘It has to be Bella’s shield. She’s protecting them. . . . All of them.’
Jane’s mouth twisted into a determined line. I saw Edward lurch towards Carlisle and, at first, I thought he was her target, but neither of the men dropped to the ground, screaming in agony.
‘I can’t touch them,’ Jane snarled furiously. ‘I can’t touch any of them.’
Bella grinned smugly at us and Jane hissed in anger. Alec put a comforting hand on her shoulder. The guard mindlink rippled with anxiety at the fact that the Cullens had so much protection from our gifts.
Aro instructed, ‘Eve, try to connect to their minds. Perhaps if you are able to link to them, her protection will be moot.’
I glanced out at the group and settled my eyes on Renesmee. It should have been easier, since I had linked to her mind previously. But when I tried to reach out, it was as if she wasn’t there. I could physically see her, so I knew exactly where her mind should be, but I couldn’t reach it.
‘I can’t reach them, either.’
‘Alec,’ Aro ordered.
Alec released my hand. He turned his hands so his palms were facing up. Black smoke curled between his fingers before it poured from his hands, gathering on the ground. It crept along the field, the dark smoke a stark contrast to the white snow. It wasn’t affected by a sudden gust of wind, or the crack that abruptly formed in the ground, although the latter made the kings break apart to stare at the ground in wonder.
The thick, black smoke continued to crawl towards the Cullens. Then, it hit an invisible wall. Alec’s lip curled into a snarl and his smoke began to creep along the sides of the barrier and upward, seeking for any weakness in the shield. I could tell from the annoyed look on Alec’s face that he found none.
Alec pulled his smoke away from the shield, but he let it linger around the base, still searching for a weakness. If Bella lost concentration for even just a split-second, it would slip in and they would be unprotected from Alec, at least.
At last, Aro spoke.
“Before we vote, let me remind you, whatever the council’s decision, there need be no violence here.”
Edward laughed darkly.
“It will be a regrettable waste to our kind to lose any of you,” Aro said. “But you especially, young Edward, and your newborn mate. The Volturi would be glad to welcome many of you into our ranks. Bella, Benjamin, Zafrina, Kate. There are many choices before you. Consider them.”
He let his words linger for a long moment before he said, “Let us vote, then.”
Caius said, “The child is an unknown quantity. There is no reason to allow such a risk to exist. It must be destroyed, along with all who protect it.”
“I see no immediate danger,” Marcus said softly. “The child is safe enough for now. We can always reevaluate later. Let us leave in peace.”
“I must make the deciding vote, it seems,” Aro murmured.
“Aro?” Edward called suddenly. The guard shifted uneasily at his confident tone.
“Yes, Edward?” Aro asked. “You have something further . . . ?”
“Perhaps. First, if I could clarify one point?”
“Certainly.”
“The danger you foresee from my daughter — this stems entirely from our inability to guess how she will develop? That is the crux of the matter?”
“Yes, dear Edward,” Aro agreed. “If we could but be positive . . . be sure that, as she grows, she will be able to stay concealed from the human world — not endanger the safety of our obscurity. . . .”
“So, if we could only know for sure exactly what she will become, then there would be no need for a council at all?”
“If there was some way to be absolutely sure,” Aro said, somewhat hesitantly. He was suspicious of what Edward was getting at. “Then, yes, there would be no question to debate.”
“And we would part in peace, good friends once again?”
“Of course, my young friend. Nothing would please me more.”
“Then I do have something more to offer,” Edward said with a grin.
Aro’s eyes narrowed. “She is absolutely unique. Her future can only be guessed at.”
“Not absolutely unique. Rare, certainly, but not one of a kind. . . . Why don’t you join us, Alice?”
“Alice,” Aro breathed.
Five others appeared at the opposite edge of the forest. They ran into the clearing, stopping between Edward and Carlisle. No one in the guard missed how they seamlessly passed through Bella’s shield. Now that we knew that it would not keep us out physically, Felix began to eye Bella eagerly.
“Alice has been searching for her own witnesses these last weeks,” Edward said, addressing Aro. “And she does not come back empty-handed. Alice, why don’t you introduce the witnesses you’ve brought?”
Caius snarled. “The time for witnesses is past! Cast your vote, Aro!”
Aro raised one finger to silence his brother, his eyes stuck on Alice, who stepped forward.
“This is Huilen and her nephew, Nahuel,” Alice said in her light, airy voice.
“Speak, Huilen,” Aro commanded. “Give us the witness you were brought to bear.”
The woman glanced nervously at Alice before she looked back at us and began to speak.
Huilen told us that she was a century and a half old, and that she had a sister, Pire. Her sister had told her of an ‘angel’ who found her in the woods and visited her by night. Huilen had warned her against seeing the man, especially when she saw the bruises on Pire’s skin. Pire disregarded her warnings and continued to meet with the man.
A short while later, Pire told Huilen that she was carrying the man’s child. She had planned to run away, knowing that their parents would get rid of both Pire and the child. Huilen followed her sister into the deepest parts of the Amazon, searching for the man, but he had disappeared. As time passed, Huilen cared for her sister, speaking of how she hunted for Pire, who ate animals raw and drank their blood. That was when Huilen finally realized what the child was.
Huilen spoke of how Pire loved the child inside of her. She named him Nahuel when he grew strong and broke her bones while still in her womb. Pire died when Nahuel ripped himself from her body to be born. Her last wish was that Huilen care for her son.
The boy bit Huilen when she tried to take him in her arms. She described the burning pain that shot through her body, and how she thought she would die. But when she woke from the pain, the child was curled up at her side. She cared for him, and they had been living in the Amazon by themselves for the past century.
Aro pursed his lips. He addressed the male that had arrived with the others.
“Nahuel, you are one hundred and fifty years old?”
“Give or take a decade,” he answered with a shrug. “We don’t keep track.”
“And you reached maturity at what age?”
“About seven years after my birth, more or less, I was full grown.”
“You have not changed since then?”
He shrugged again. “Not that I’ve noticed.”
“And your diet?”
“Mostly blood, but some human food, too. I can survive on either.”
“You were able to create an immortal?” Aro gestured toward Huilen.
“Yes, but none of the rest can.”
A shocked murmur rumbled through each group.
“The rest?” Aro asked.
“My sisters.”
Aro stared at him in pure amazement for a moment before he said slowly, “Perhaps you would tell us the rest of your story, for there seems to be more.”
“My father came looking for me a few years after my mother’s death. He was pleased to find me. He had two daughters, but no sons. He expected me to join him, as my sisters had. He was surprised I was not alone. My sisters are not venomous, but whether that’s due to gender or a random chance . . . who knows? I already had my family with Huilen, and I was not interested in making a change. I see him from time to time. I have a new sister. She reached maturity about ten years back.”
“Your father’s name?” Caius asked, his voice still filled with fury.
“Joham. He considers himself a scientist. He thinks he’s creating a new super-race.”
Caius looked at Bella and Edward. “Your daughter, is she venomous.”
“No,” Bella said quickly.
Aro looked at them all for a long moment, considering everything that had happened and what we had just been told.
Finally, he said, “Brother, there appears to be no danger. This is an unusual development, but I see no threat. These half-vampire children are much like us, it appears.”
“Is that your vote?” Caius asked, his tone clearly frustrated.
“It is.”
“And this Joham? This immortal so fond of experimentation?”
“Perhaps we should speak with him,” Aro agreed.
“Stop Joham if you will, but leave my sisters be,” Nahuel said. “They are innocent.”
Aro nodded solemnly. He turned towards the annoyed, frustrated guard with a warm, placating smile on his face.
“Dear ones. We do not fight today.”
All at once, the guard relaxed. Alec finally — though reluctantly — pulled his smoke back into the air. The low guard began to leave, with about half of the high guard, as Marcus, Caius, and the wives drifted towards the edge of the clearing that we had entered from. Alec and I remained with Aro, Renata, Demetri, and Felix.
“I’m so glad this could be resolved without violence,” Aro said to the Cullens. “My friend, Carlisle — how pleased I am to call you friend again! I hope there are no hard feelings. I know you understand the strict burden that our duty places on our shoulders.”
“Leave in peace, Aro,” Carlisle said stiffly. “Please remember that we still have our anonymity to protect here, and keep your guard from hunting in this region.”
“Of course, Carlisle,” Aro assured him. “I am sorry to earn your disapproval, my dear friend. Perhaps, in time, you will forgive me.”
“Perhaps, in time, if you prove a friend to us again.”
Aro bowed his head and finally turned away from them. We fell into step around him as we left the clearing.
“Eve,” Aro said. I stepped up to walk beside him, Alec drifting forward with me. “I am not sure if you noticed while I was listening to Edward’s memories, but it appears that the Cullens have told your father that Bella and the rest of their family are not human.”
I froze. Alec grabbed my hand as terror and rage filled my body. Aro turned to face me and I looked up at him in horror.
“He . . . he knows?” I whispered in a small voice. Aro nodded, watching me carefully. I squeezed my eyes tightly shut for a moment before I opened them. I begged, “Please, please, just do it quickly. He shouldn’t suffer for her crimes–”
Aro held up a single hand and I fell silent, biting down hard on the inside of my cheek. I gripped Alec’s hand so tightly that I could hear a high-pitched whine as a crack formed in his hand, but he didn’t even try to pull away.
“I have no intention of having your father executed, young one,” Aro said. “You, your mate, and his sister are the crown jewels of our guard. If allowing your father to live keeps you happy, then it is a miniscule price to pay.”
“Thank you,” I breathed in relief.
“Of course, young one,” he murmured with a small smile. Then, he said, “I do feel the need, however, to remind you that you still cannot contact him in any way.”
“Yes, I understand,” I said softly.
He nodded, then drifted away with everyone else. Alec and I remained where we were standing, choosing to follow them later.
“She is reckless and such a narcissist,” I hissed angrily. “She put my father’s life in danger, after she begged me to stay with him to protect him! I don’t care if she was absolutely sure that Aro wouldn’t have him killed because of my place in the guard, but it was still incredibly dangerous.”
“All she thinks of is herself,” Alec agreed. He took my face in his hands and said, “But your father is safe, my love. And, though you cannot contact him directly, you can still follow his life from afar. I’m sure that Demetri would be able to track him for you if you simply asked.”
I sighed and wrapped my arms around his waist. Alec put his arms around me as I tucked my head into the crook of his neck. “You’re right. . . . God, I’m just so tired of dealing with Bella and all of her shit. I thought I’d never have to deal with her again after today.”
Alec pressed a kiss to my temple and rubbed his hand along my back.
“Be patient, my love. I doubt that the Cullens will be able to keep themselves out of trouble for long. They will make another mistake, and they will not be able to slip through our grasp any longer.”
“I hope so,” I mumbled.
He laughed softly. He leaned back, then reached up to gently tilt my head up. Alec kissed me fiercely. His hand slid up to thread his fingers through my hair. I moaned, pulling him as close as possible.
When we broke apart, Alec hummed and combed his fingers through my hair.
“Come, sweet girl. Let’s go back home.”

24. TRUTH
Edward growled, undoubtedly having heard Aro’s silent words. He glared at me, his golden eyes holding a mixture of fury and curiosity. I knew where the rage came from, and I assumed he was curious about my ability.
I turned and pressed a soft kiss to Alec’s cheek before I stepped forward to join the others. Demetri moved aside to allow me to stand beside Aro.
Edward growled again, which made a growl rise in Bella’s throat. Behind me, I heard Alec and Jane both hiss furiously at them. I smirked slightly, my heart swelling with love at how protective my mate and his sister were over me.
“Renesmee, do you recognize who this is?” Aro asked.
I lowered the hood of my cloak and she looked up at me. The little girl said, “She’s my aunt, Eve.”
Smiling at her, I knelt down so that we were eye-to-eye.
“Hello, Renesmee,” I greeted. She leaned forward to press her hand to my cheek, but I smiled and said, “No need for that, little one. I can hear your thoughts without your touch. You told Aro that I was taken by the Volturi. Why would you say that?”
Renesmee replied to me in her thoughts. Luckily, I had already linked her mind to my own. I also added Aro and Alec to the link. I wanted them to know exactly what Renesmee would say.
‘My mother told me they stole you from your bed in the middle of the night while her and Grandpa were sleeping. She said that Alec is obsessed with you and he took you when you told him that you didn’t want to be with him. And when he took you, they had someone use their power to create a bond between you and Alec, and everyone else in the Volturi, too.’
My eyes snapped up to Bella and my lip curled in a snarl. How dare she accuse Alec of kidnapping me? How dare she accuse the Volturi of using Chelsea to force a fake bond between me and my own mate? She was the only one who had ever manipulated me.
I looked back at Renesmee, smoothing my face back into a calm expression. A smirk curled on my lips and I offered, “Do you want to see what really happened?”
The young girl hesitated, then nodded. Aro reached out to me and I took his hand, using him to show Renesmee my memories through the mindlink.
I showed her how I first met Alec in Volterra — how my world stopped when our eyes met, how he had pulled me into his arms when he thought I was in danger, and how nervous I was, but how I still felt entirely safe in his arms.
I showed her how her mother and her father attempted to keep me from Alec — how they manipulated me and my love for my father into doing what they wanted me to do.
I showed her how miserable I was being away from Alec — how I just stayed in bed all day, crying myself to sleep every night.
I showed her how Alec had come to check on me — how he saw me sobbing and how he just couldn’t leave me like that, how he pulled me into his arms and just held me while I slept, how he asked me in the morning to come to Volterra, how he waited for me to make my mind.
“Do you see, little one?” I asked softly, pulling my hand away from Aro’s. “It was my choice to leave with Alec. I went with him because I just couldn’t stand to be away from him any longer. No one forced me to go with him. I left because I love him, and he loves me. . . . Your mother and father were the only ones who tried to force me to do anything, and they wanted me to stay away from him.”
Bella and Edward snarled, but Alec and Jane growled viciously back at them. I ignored them all and continued to speak to Renesmee.
“Your parents and the Cullens have broken one of our most important laws. Your father allowed a human — your mother — to know about vampires without ever intending to change her. And now, they have created you — something that has never existed before,” I said. “We believed you to be an immortal child, but even now that we know that is not what you are, we still do not know what you will become or if you will be able to follow our laws, especially since your family seems to have such little regard for them. . . . Do you understand, Renesmee? We only came here to seek justice.”
‘I understand,’ she said through the mindlink. ‘I’m sorry that I believed them when they said the Volturi took you.’
I laughed softly. “It is perfectly alright, Renesmee. Of course you trusted that what your parents told you was the truth. I’m just glad that you know what really happened now.”
I stood and returned to Alec’s side, not missing the proud smile that Aro sent me. Alec took my hand when I reached him. He pressed a kiss to my forehead.
‘You were incredible,’ Alec murmured in our personal mindlink. ‘You were very gentle with her, but you spoke the truth. I can’t believe they told her I kidnapped you.’
‘I’m not shocked at anything they do at this point. They just wanted to scare their daughter into thinking the Volturi are evil.’
I focused back on Aro as he began to speak again.
“So much to discuss, so much to decide. If you and your furry protector will excuse me, my dear Cullens, I must confer with my brothers.”
Aro waved the guard forward. As we began to advance, Edward pulled his family back towards their own ground. It took the guard mere seconds to surround Aro and the others.
“How can you abide this infamy?” Caius asked incredulously. “Why do we stand here impotently in the face of such an outrageous crime, covered by such a ridiculous deception?”
“Because it’s all true. Every word of it,” Aro said. He looked at me and I confirmed his words with a nod, which seemed to annoy Caius. “Brother, see how many witnesses stand ready to give evidence that they have seen this miraculous child grow and mature in just the short time they’ve known her. That they have felt the warmth of the blood that pulses in her veins.”
Caius was silent, deliberating for a moment before he said, “The werewolves.”
“Ah, brother. . . .”
“Will you defend that alliance, too, Aro? The Children of the Moon have been our bitter enemies from the dawn of time. We have hunted them to near extinction in Europe and Asia. Yet Carlisle encourages a familiar relationship with this enormous infestation — no doubt in an attempt to overthrow us. The better to protect his warped lifestyle.”
Edward cleared his throat loudly, drawing Caius’s focus to him. The blond king threw an angry glare at him while Aro rubbed a hand over his face, clearly frustrated.
“Caius, it’s the middle of the day,” Edward said. “These are not Children of the Moon, clearly. They bear no relation to your enemies on the other side of the world.”
Caius spat, “You breed mutants here.”
“They aren’t even werewolves. Aro can tell you all about it if you don’t believe me.”
“Dear Caius, I would have warned you not to press this point if you had told me your thoughts,” Aro said. “Though the creatures think of themselves as werewolves, they are not. The more accurate name for them would be shape-shifters. The choice of a wolf form was purely chance. It could have been a bear or a hawk or a panther when the first change was made. These creatures truly have nothing to do with the Children of the Moon. They have merely inherited this skill from their fathers. It’s genetic — they do not continue their species by infecting others the way true werewolves do.”
“They know our secret,” Caius said.
Aro replied, “They are creatures of our supernatural world, brother. Perhaps even more dependent upon secrecy than we are. They can hardly expose us. Carefully, Caius. Specious allegations get us nowhere.”
In his mindlink with the other king’s, Aro hissed at Caius, ‘If we continue to accuse them of every crime under the sun, then our witnesses will believe that we are trying to find any fault with them simply to justify destroying them. We must be careful, brother. I have a plan, if you will allow me to conduct it.’
Caius was silent, but he gave a small nod. Aro then turned towards the Cullens.
“Just to be thorough, I’d like to speak with a few of your witnesses. Procedure, you know.”
Edward hissed and several of the Cullens stiffened at his words. Aro drifted towards them, ignoring their reactions. He stopped a few yards from what seemed to be a mated couple that were standing at the very edge of the group.
Aro spoke to the man, Amun, who told him that the child was biologically Edward and Bella’s daughter, that she grows with each passing day, and that she learns new information. Aro seemed focused on the fact that the girl grows so quickly. Amun admitted that he saw no danger in her because she is able to learn, unlike typical immortal children.
The man and his mate quickly left the clearing, with Aro’s permission. He then turned to another vampire on the Cullen’s side to ask for her opinion of the child.
“She’s no danger to humans,” Siobhan said. “She blends in better than we do. She poses no threat of exposure.”
“Can you think of none?” Aro asked her, causing Edward to growl.
The woman replied, “I don’t think I follow you.”
Aro drifted back towards us. Renara, Felix, and Demetri trailed him like a shadow.
“There is no broken law,” Aro announced. “No broken law. However, does it follow then that there is no danger? No. That is a separate issue.”
He began to pace, slowly moving closer and closer to the line of guards.
“She is unique . . . utterly, impossibly unique. Such a waste it would be, to destroy something so lovely. Especially when we could learn so much. . . . But there is danger, danger that cannot simply be ignored. How ironic it is that as the humans advance, as their faith in science grows and controls their world, the more free we are from discovery. Yet, as we become more uninhibited by their disbelief in the supernatural, they become strong enough in their technologies that, if they wished, they could actually pose a threat to us, even destroy some of us.
“For thousands and thousands of years, our secrecy has been more a matter of convenience, of ease, than of actual safety. This last raw, angry century has given birth to weapons of such power that they endanger even immortals. Now our status as mere myth in truth protects us from these weak creatures we hunt.
“This amazing child, if we could know her potential — know with absolute certainty that she could always remain shrouded within the obscurity that protects us. But we know nothing of what she will become! Her own parents are plagued by fears of her future. We cannot know what she will grow to be.”
He turned, looking at the witnesses that we had gathered. Aro said, “Only the known is safe. Only the known is tolerable. The unknown is . . . a vulnerability.”
“You’re reaching, Aro,” Carlisle said in a bleak, anxious voice.
“Peace, friend,” Aro said with a smile. “Let us not be hasty. Let us look at this from every side.”
One of the nomads on the Cullen’s side stepped forward to offer his opinion. Aro let him speak his mind. He spoke of how Carlisle had asked him to witness the trial, but that he had come to witness the Volturi. He claimed that we did not come to execute justice, but rather, we used this reported crime as a reason to destroy the Cullens. He claimed that the Volturi saw them as competition to their power because they are a family, rather than just a coven.
Anger seared through the mindlink of all the guards and even our leaders. This I allowed to fester, since I could not contain my own anger at the man’s words. We were a family — a mismatched, slightly dysfunctional one — but a family nonetheless. We cared for each other and protected each other and loved each other.
“Some of us wondered if Carlisle having truth on his side would be enough to stop the so-called justice,” the nomad continued. “Are the Volturi here to protect the safety of our secrecy, or to protect their own power? Did they come to destroy an illegal creation, or a way of life? Their guard is just a mindless weapon, a tool in their masters’ quest for domination.
Once again, the mindlink ignited with annoyed and insulted grumbles from the guard, though no one actually voiced their frustration. We were far from mindless, and we resented being thought of as just ‘tools’ to be used.
Finally, the nomad looked towards our witnesses and goaded, “You might consider joining us. If you think the Volturi will let you live to tell this tale, you are mistaken. We may all be destroyed, but then again, maybe not. Perhaps we are on more equal footing than they know. Perhaps the Volturi have finally met their match.”
Aro simply smiled at the man. “A very pretty speech, my revolutionary friend.”
“Revolutionary?” the nomad snarled. “Who am I revolting against, might I ask? Are you my king? Do you wish me to call you master, too, like your sycophantic guard?”
“Peace, Garrett,” Aro said patiently. “I meant only to refer to your time of birth. Still a patriot, I see.”
He turned to face our witnesses. He said, “What do you think of all this, friends? I can assure you the child is not what we feared. But we must decide if we take the risk and let the child live. Do we put our world in jeopardy to preserve their family intact? Or does earnest Garrett have the right of it? Any of you may go in peace as Amun did. You are here because you agreed to witness. That is all we have asked of you, and all we will ask of you.”
A few of the witnesses nodded and began to leave the clearing. Once they were gone, Aro inclined his head to those who had remained — which was nearly all of them — before he turned back to the guard.
“We are outnumbered, dearest ones,” Aro said, his voice clear and strong. “We can expect no outside help. Should we leave this question undecided to save ourselves?”
“No, master,” we said in a single, united voice.
“Is the protection of our world worth perhaps the loss of some of our number?”
“Yes,” we said. Santiago added, “We are not afraid.”
Aro smiled, then turned towards Caius and Marcus.
“Brothers, there is much to consider here.”
“Let us counsel,” Caius and Marcus said together. They joined hands and stood together in a small group, facing each other and speaking near silently so that no one else could hear them.
Alec took my hand in his, linking our fingers together. We looked at each other to share a love-filled look.
‘I love you, my sweet Eve. I do not know how this will end, but I will do everything in my power to protect you,’ Alec said in our private mindlink.
‘We will survive,’ I replied confidently. ‘I refuse to leave this world without having spent at least a year with you. I love you, Alec.’
He squeezed my hand tightly and we shared a small smile. Then, Aro spoke through the guard’s mindlink.
‘Prepare yourselves, my dear ones.’

23. CONFRONTATION
The full force of the Volturi — the kings, their wives, the high guard, and the low guard — had gathered just outside of the large field where we would meet the Cullens. We were arranged in a single line, with the low guard flanking the ends of our formation and the high guard in the middle and the kings and their wives at the heart of the formation. We were all wearing our long cloaks, the hoods drawn up so that it was slightly harder to recognize where each of us were standing. The color of our cloaks formed a gradient, with the darkest in the middle and the lightest on the very edges.
I was standing between Marcus and Alec. On Aro’s order, I had linked the minds of all of the guards and the kings. We had practiced the link over and over again for the last week. I had never linked the whole guard together before, but, thankfully, it wasn’t much harder than linking the entire high guard.
Finally, Aro said through the mind link, “Forward.”
We drifted forward as a single unit, moving from the treeline into the snow-dusted field. We glided across the snow elegantly, looking as if we were simply floating over the ground.
I could hear our fifty witnesses gathering behind us, and the informer, Irina. She lingered between the group of witnesses and the guard.
Led by Demetri, half of our guard had spent the last week gathering as many witnesses as possible. The kings wanted as many of our kind as possible to watch the trial and spread the truth about what would happen here to other covens as a warning.
A moment later, an image flashed through one mind and then echoed in a dozen others a millisecond later. We all froze in place with shock, staring at the large wolves that were moving to flank the Cullens.
After I looked away from the wolves, my eyes found the one at the heart of this problem. It was clear that she was a young child — with an inhumanly pretty face. It was clear that she was an immortal. The evidence of their crime, plain for anyone to see, was standing between Bella and Edward.
One of the Cullens stepped forward. It took me a moment to place him from my murky memories, but his name echoed through my mind in Aro’s voice.
Carlisle.
“Aro, my old friend,” the Cullen patriarch called, spreading his arms wide. “It’s been centuries.”
There was a long pause as Aro contemplated Carlisle’s words. I was careful to keep his thoughts contained to just himself. It wasn’t necessary for any of us to know exactly what he was thinking right now.
Then, Aro stepped forward. Renata, Aro’s bodyguard that had the ability to repel opponents, moved with him with her fingers pressed firmly against his back. A few of the guards growled and leaned forward into defensive crouches as one of our leaders stepped out of line.
Aro held up one hand and said softly, “Peace.”
The guards calmed slightly as Aro took a few more steps forward. He said, “Fair words, Carlisle. They seem out of place, considering the army you’ve assembled to kill me, and to kill my dear ones.”
Carlisle shook his head. He extended his hand. “You have but to touch my hand to know that was never my intent.”
“But how can your intent possibly matter, dear Carlisle, in the face of what you have done?”
“I have not committed the crime you are here to punish me for.”
“Then step aside and let us punish those responsible. Truly, Carlisle, nothing would please me more than to preserve your life today.”
“No one has broken the law, Aro. Let me explain.”
Carlisle offered his hand again, but before Aro could respond, Caius moved to his brother’s side.
“So many pointless rules, so many unnecessary laws you create for yourself, Carlisle,” Caius hissed. “How is it possible that you defend the breaking of one that truly matters?”
“The law is not broken. If you would listen–”
“We see the child, Carlisle,” Caius snarled. “Do not treat us as fools.”
She is not an immortal. She is not a vampire. I can easily prove this with just a few moments–”
Caius interrupted him again to say, “If she is not one of the forbidden, then why have you massed a battalion to protect her?”
“Witnesses, Caius, just as you have brought. Any one of these friends can tell you the truth about the child. Or you could just look at her, Caius. See the flush of human blood in her cheeks.”
“Artifice!” the blond king snapped. “Where is the informer? Let her come forward!”
When she didn’t move on her own, one of the guards pushed her towards Caius and Aro. She stepped forward slowly, her eyes locked on her sisters, who were standing with the Cullens.
Caius crossed the distance between them and slapped her across the face. She looked at him and he pointed a finger at the child.
“This is the child you saw?” he demanded. “The one that was obviously more than human?”
Irina’s eyes flickered to the child. Her head tilted to the side as she gazed at her, confusion crossing her features.
“I . . . I’m not sure.”
“What do you mean?” Caius asked, his voice a deadly whisper.
I heard confusion spread across everyone’s thoughts through the mindlink. None of us understood how she didn’t know if this child was the same one she had come to inform us about — our memories were absolutely perfect.
“She’s not the same, but I think it’s the same child,” Irina said nervously. “What I mean is, she’s changed. This child is bigger than the one I saw, but–”
Caius gasped furiously and Irina quickly stopped talking. Aro swiftly moved to Caius’s side, placing a comforting hand on his shoulder.
“Be composed, brother,” Aro advised calmly. “We have time to sort this out. No need to be hasty.”
Caius turned away from Irina with a small huff while Aro extended his hand to her. “Now, sweetling, show me what you’re trying to say.”
She took his hand and her thoughts flashed through Aro’s mind, then my own. I allowed them to filter through to the other kings and the guard. I tilted my head when the memory ended and looked back at the child curiously.
“You see, Caius? It is a simple matter to get what we need. . . . And so we have a mystery on our hands, it seems,” Aro said, releasing Irina’s hand. “It would appear the child has grown. Yet Irina’s first memory was clearly that of an immortal child. Curious.”
“That’s exactly what I’m trying to explain,” Carlisle said, clearly relieved. He held out his hand again, clearly offering it to Aro.
“I would rather have the explanation from someone more central to the story, my friend. Am I wrong to assume that this breach was not of your making?”
“There was no breach.”
“Be that as it may, I will have every facet of the truth. And the best way to get that is to have evidence directly from your talented son.” Aro inclined his head towards Edward. “As the child clings to his newborn mate, I’m assuming Edward is involved.”
Edward turned to press kisses to Bella and the child’s foreheads. Then, he moved across the field, touching Carlisle’s shoulder as he passed the man. He stopped a few yards away from Aro. He held his hand out.
Aro eagerly moved towards him. The guard grew more anxious as he moved farther from us, their thoughts all focused on preparing themselves to act at a moment’s notice. Aro took Edward’s hand and bowed his head in concentration.
I saw every memory and thought that Edward had ever had flash through Aro’s mind, but I kept it from everyone else, even the kings. It was dizzying, and disgusting. I watched as my sister wasted away to carry the child in her stomach until she was little more than sallow skin stretched over bones and a large baby bump. I saw the child when she was ‘born’, literally torn out of Bella’s stomach by Edward, who used his razor sharp teeth. I saw the child grow and grow rapidly, learning to walk and talk within mere days. She was no immortal child, not in the way all of us knew and expected. But she was certainly not purely human either.
Low murmurs rumbled through the guard’s mindlink as Aro remained frozen for longer than they expected. I attempted to calm them by letting them know that Aro was simply taking his time, probing for any and all information he could gather from Edward. They settled marginally.
Finally, Aro straightened, but he didn’t release Edward’s hand.
“You see?” Edward said.
“Yes, I see, indeed,” Aro agreed, amazed. “I doubt whether any two among gods or mortals have ever seen quite so clearly. You have given me much to ponder, my young friend. Much more than I expected. . . . May I meet her? I never dreamed of the existence of such a thing in all my centuries. What an addition to our histories!”
“What is this about, Aro?” Caius snapped.
“Something you’ve never dreamed of, my practical friend. Take a moment to ponder, for the justice we intended to deliver no longer applies.”
Caius hissed and Aro cautioned, “Peace, brother.”
The guard’s mindlink was alight with confusion and anger at Aro’s words. I hastened to calm them once again, insisting that Aro did not mean for us to give up and leave the Cullens unpunished. ‘Trust him.’
“Will you introduce me to your daughter?” Aro asked Edward.
Edward nodded reluctantly. He was still holding Aro’s hand, and Aro answered the question that passed through my sister’s husband’s mind.
“I think a compromise on this one point is certainly acceptable, under the circumstance. We will meet in the middle.”
Aro released Edward’s hand but, as soon as Edward turned, he threw his arm around the younger man’s shoulders. As they began to move towards the Cullens, the rest of us followed them. Aro raised his hand.
“Hold, my dear ones. Truly, they mean us no harm if we are peaceable.”
Many of those within the guard hissed and snarled in protest. We didn’t trust the Cullens.
“Perhaps you should bring a few members of your guard with us,” Edward suggested. “It will make them more comfortable.”
Aro nodded, then snapped his fingers twice. “Felix, Demetri.”
The mated bodyguards moved to his side instantly. Renata was still trailing behind Aro, her fingers never moving from their firm position against his back.
“Bella,” Edward called when they finally stopped in the center of the snowy field. “Bring Renesmee . . . and a few friends.”
My eyes moved to look at my sister for the first time today. She still had the red eyes of a newborn, though they seemed to be slightly duller, likely from the animal blood she was consuming. She was certainly aesthetically gorgeous, yet the sight of her filled my body with fury. She had tried to keep me from my mate. I would never be able to forgive her for causing me that pain.
Alec brushed his fingers lightly against my hand, drawing me back from my rage. I relaxed at his gentle touch and I shot him a quick, thankful glance before I focused back on the trial.
Bella was walking forward with the child and two protectors. One was a wolf and the other was Emmett, the bulky Cullen vampire. The guard rumbled uneasily at the sight of the wolf moving closer. Aro held his hand up and they fell silent again, though they continued to complain in the mindlink. I let them keep their thoughts to themselves. The last thing we needed right now was for them to whip themselves into a fury.
“Interesting company you keep,” Demetri commented. Edward ignored him and joined Bella once they reached the middle of the field, taking her hand in his.
Aro tilted his head to the side as he stared at the child, Renesmee. “I hear her strange heart. I smell her strange scent.” Aro looked up at Bella. “In truth, young Bella, immortality does become you most extraordinarily. It is as if you were designed for this life. . . . May I greet your daughter, lovely Bella?”
Bella moved forward with Renesmee. Aro grinned.
“But she’s exquisite. So like you and Edward. Hello, Renesmee.”
“Hello, Aro,” she answered. Her voice was high and musical, but it was strange to hear a young child with such a voice.
“What is it?” Caius hissed.
“Half mortal, half immortal,” Aro announced. “Conceived so, and carried by this newborn while she was still human.”
“Impossible,” the other king scoffed.
“Do you think they’ve fooled me, brother?” Aro asked icily. Caius shifted uncertainly, but remained silent. “Is the heartbeat you hear a trickery as well? Calmly and carefully, brother. I know well how you love your justice, but there is no justice in acting against this unique little one for her parentage. And so much to learn, so much to learn! I know you don’t have my enthusiasm for collecting histories, but be tolerant with me, brother, as I add a chapter that stuns me with its improbability. We came expecting only justice and the sadness of false friends, but look what we have gained instead! A new, bright knowledge of ourselves, our possibilities.”
Aro reached his hand out to Renesmee. Instead of taking his hand, however, she leaned closer and pressed her palm to his cheek.
I watched the steady stream of her thoughts. She was showing him — and by extension me — every memory of her life. It was clear that everyone around her doted on her and cherished her. She had apparently even been told about me — that I had been kidnapped by the Volturi and forced to be Alec’s mate.
I scoffed in disbelief. Several pairs of eyes glanced towards me, both from the guard and the Cullens.
‘I heard it as well,’ Aro said in our personal mindlink. ‘Come, young Eve. Why don’t you tell little Renesmee what actually happened?’

22. INFORMER
I stood on the balcony of our room in the castle, staring up at the sky. Alec had his arms wrapped loosely around my waist and his chin rested against my head.
“Do you think we’ll get snow soon?” I asked hopefully.
The December air was crisp and just cold enough that it could carry snowflakes down to the ground.
“Maybe,” Alec replied. “If we don’t get snow here in Volterra, we could go up to the Alps for a few days. Have you ever been skiing?”
“No. Would you teach me?” I asked, turning to face him.
“Of course,” he said with a grin. Alec bent his head down and pressed a kiss to my lips. “I could teach you how to snowboard, too, if you wish.”
I grinned and said, “Definitely.”
Alec kissed me again. One of my hands drifted up to brush through his messy curls. He groaned and pulled me closer to his chest. I deepened our kiss, pressing my tongue into his mouth as my fingers tightened in his hair.
“My sincerest apologies.”
We broke apart from each other to look towards the doorway, where Demetri was standing with his hand over his eyes. He kept his eyes covered as he said, “The masters want all of the high guard in the throne room, now. Someone has come to report that the Cullens broke a law.”
My body went rigid and Alec’s arm curled tighter around my waist.
“Which law?” Alec asked carefully.
“I do not know. She has not said.”
Alec nodded. He glanced at me, then looked back at Demetri and said, “We will be there shortly.”
The tracker left our room and Alec turned back towards me. He murmured softly, “Eve . . . we have to go.”
“Y-Yeah,” I whispered.
But I couldn’t get my body to move. I was frozen in place with the terror that my sister had told my father about our world. If he knew about us, about our secret , he would have to be turned or killed, and I knew that he could never handle this life. If Bella caused his death, I would never be able to forgive her. I would want to kill her with my own hands.
“Eve, my love, please listen to me,” Alec pleaded softly, taking my hands in his. “Your father is safe. Nothing will be decided until we get there and hear the informer’s testimony. We might even be able to convince the masters that your father can keep his life. . . . But we must go.”
I took a slow, deep breath, then nodded. Alec squeezed my hands and pressed a kiss to my cheek.
We changed into our guard uniforms, then began to walk down to the throne room. I was gripping Alec’s hand as if it was my lifeline. He was holding my hand just as tight, letting me know that he was there for me.
We entered the throne room. All eyes followed us as we moved to stand beside Jane. She gave me a concerned look. It was clear that everyone knew that this hearing was about the Cullens, which only made me more anxious. If I was still human, there was no doubt in my mind that my heart would be racing in my chest. Alec rubbed his thumb along my own in an attempt to calm me.
The masters entered the throne room, thankfully drawing all the attention away from me. The masters’ personal bodyguards flanked them as they moved to their thrones. Once they were all seated and their guards positioned properly, Demetri and Felix led in the informer.
She was tall and blonde, gorgeous even for a vampire, and she had the same golden eyes as the Cullens. Her eyes flickered around nervously when she saw that the full high guard and all three kings had gathered in the room.
“Come forward, Irina,” Aro said. “I was told you have a crime that you wish to report.”
“Yes,” she said softly. The blonde hesitated for a moment before she lifted her chin slightly and said, “The Cullens have created an immortal child.”
Instantly, relief flooded through my body before shock and horror quickly replaced it. Even Aro seemed surprised as he urgently extended his hand towards Irina. I linked to his mind without his request, watching her memory with him.
Irina had been standing on a tall cliff, looking down at a clearing below. A little bronze-haired girl ran through the snow-covered field at an inhuman speed. She leapt up into the air — much higher than any human could ever hope to get — then landed so lightly that she barely left footprints in the snow.
My breath left me in a rush when Aro released Irina’s hand. I glanced at him and saw his mouth pressed into a hard line. Various thoughts swirled in Aro’s mind, but one was clear.
The Cullens would not be forgiven for this crime. There would be no leniency this time. Telling a human about our world was nothing compared to the crime of creating an immortal child.
Aro said, “Thank you for your report, Irina. We would like you to remain in Volterra with us until we go confront the Cullens. Purely to protect you from their retaliation, of course.”
The blonde seemed to hesitate, but after a moment, she nodded. “Yes, Aro. . . . Thank you.”
“Heidi, will you please show our guest to one of the rooms?”
The curvy brunette quickly moved forward to guide Irina out of the throne room.
“They truly created an immortal child ?” Caius hissed the moment the door was closed.
“Yes,” Aro confirmed. He glanced at me. “Eve, you saw her memory just as I did.”
I nodded as the others looked at me. I said, “It’s true. . . . She . . . she was so fast, and could jump so high and move so gracefully. . . . There is no way the child is human.”
“The Cullens must pay for this infraction,” Caius demanded angrily. “They have broken our laws without any repercussions. No longer, Aro.”
Aro turned his head sharply towards Caius. “They will pay, brother. This will be their downfall. . . . Yet I fear confronting them with only our guard. Their coven has many ties to other covens and nomads around the world. We shall need witnesses to the trial, to ensure that the truth of what happened will prevail. We cannot allow anyone to think that we destroyed the Cullens without just cause. . . . We will take two weeks to gather our witnesses before we confront the Cullens. Demetri, I expect you to take the lead in searching them out. . . . You are all dismissed.”
The high guard slowly trickled out of the throne room, murmuring amongst ourselves about how the Cullens could be so reckless and cruel as to create an immortal child.
“I wouldn’t think it could be true if Aro and Eve didn’t see the child in her memory,” Santiago said, shaking his head in disbelief.
Felix scoffed, “I can’t believe they are being so reckless these last few months. First, there was the mess with the human girl and Edward’s refusal to change her, and now an immortal child? Carlisle was with us for two decades. He knows that this will not be taken lightly. . . . This will be the death of all of them.”
“They will fight,” Demetri replied and Felix took his hand. “We all saw how Edward was willing to fight us because of his human. . . . How likely is it that the two of them wanted the child as their own?”
“Is that something that Bella would do?” Jane asked me.
I hesitated. “I . . . I don’t know. I would like to say that she would never doom a child to that fate, but . . . I really am unsure now. All she thinks about is herself and what she wants. If she said to Edward that she wanted a child. . . .”
“He would go get one for her,” Alec finished for me. I nodded and he squeezed my hand tightly.
“I just can’t believe they would be so selfish as to kidnap a child and turn them,” Corin said, shaking her head. “Most of the immortal children we’ve had to destroy were the trueborn children of recently turned vampires. They couldn’t imagine watching their child grow up and eventually die, which I can understand, to a point. But this . . . this is horrific.”
“I think that’s enough for today,” Felix said when I had managed to knock him to the ground for the third time during our training session.
I nodded and got up. Felix stood and patted my shoulder gently before he walked into the castle. I sighed and closed my eyes, tipping my face up to the sky and breathing in deeply.
“Can you smell the rain coming?” Alec murmured, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind.
“Mhm,” I hummed.
I turned to face him, looking up at his beautiful face. He smiled warmly at me, which drew my own smile out. I said, “You should train with us. I know your power has always been strong enough to protect you from anything, but . . . I’m worried that Bella will be able to withstand it, and maybe even protect others.”
Alec reached up to cup my cheek. I let out a soft breath and leaned into his soft touch.
“You’re right. She could protect others. . . . I’ll train with you,” he said. He leaned closer and pressed his forehead to mine. “I won’t let anything happen to either of us, my sweet girl. I love you.”
“I love you, too,” I murmured. “Thank you.”
“Of course,” he replied, drawing me even closer to his chest. I nuzzled into the crook of his neck while he buried his nose in my hair. “I will always do anything and everything I can to protect you. I would never willingly leave your side. You are my heart and soul, now and forever.”
After a long moment, Alec and I broke apart. He kept my hand firmly in his as we walked up to our room. Alec laid down on the couch in front of the fireplace, drawing me down to lay with him. I settled into his side, my head resting on his chest and my leg wrapped around his. Alec rested my hand on his chest. He began to trace his finger along each of my fingers, following the bones all the way to my wrist before tracing a path along to the next finger. I watched his movements with half-open eyes.
“Why would they do this?” I asked quietly. “Why would they create an immortal child? They must know that it’s a terrible crime.”
Alec sighed and admitted, “I don’t know, my love. I don’t understand why they would risk their lives to commit this vile crime. . . . But I do know that, now that they have created the child, they will be completely devoted to it and will risk everything to protect it.”
“Why? I mean, I know that they consider it their own child, but . . . to risk their lives?”
“I do not understand it any more than you,” Alec murmured. “Aro says that it is because the children are so adorable and endearing that they instantly love them. And where there is intense love, there is fierce protectiveness. . . . But when the children are turned, they stay their ago no matter how many years they live. They cannot control themselves and they do not listen to anyone. They would destroy entire villages in a tantrum and their creators would simply spirit them away to a new village, as if nothing happened. It was an endless cycle that quickly became catastrophic.”
“All because someone was desperate to have a child,” I said, scoffing. Alec nodded.
I hesitated, then looked up at him. “Did you ever want kids?”
“No, not really,” he admitted with a shrug. “Before, I assumed that it would eventually happen, if I could ever find a woman to marry me, but . . . I never wanted my children to suffer the way Jane and I did. I couldn’t bear the thought of them going through everything that we did when we were children. People hated us for things we couldn’t control. . . . You know, in a way, I feel such sympathy for the immortal children. They didn’t ask for this life, they had no say over it. The adults in the situation were the ones that doomed them to their fate.”
“People can be so cruel and selfish,” I murmured. I took a deep breath, then let it out slowly. I said, “Honestly, I wish I could say that I’m shocked that Bella would do something like this, but I’m not. All she ever thinks about is herself and Edward. . . . I can easily picture her wanting to have a child with him but not being able to. I’m sure the moment that he saw that she was upset, he would want to fix it. . . . And the others would go along with it because they let them do whatever they want, no matter the consequences.”
“I’m still amazed that Carlisle would allow it,” Alec said, shaking his head. “He knows the dangers, he knows the punishment is death for anyone who even knows about the child. . . . Aro would have spared him and his mate if he had simply come directly to us and told us what they had done.”
I replied, “He’s too loyal to his family. He would never report any of them for anything they do.”
“Which is unfortunate for everyone involved. Now he, his mate, and his family will all die because of their actions.”
I nodded in agreement.
Alec seemed to hesitate for a moment before he said, “I know that you are not fond of her, but Bella is your sister. Are you sure that you can handle watching us destroy her?”
The answer to his question was easy.
“Yes. She might be my sister by blood, but we were never close to each other. We never really bonded. . . . I know I seem callous, but I truly do not care about her, especially after our visit to Volterra. She was willing to manipulate me and lie to me and let me be miserable just so she wouldn’t feel as guilty about leaving Charlie all alone. She knew what I was feeling — hollow and agonized and awful — and she didn’t care.”
Alec smoothed his hand over my hair and I sighed, relaxing into his touch again. He pressed a kiss to the top of my head and murmured against my hair, “I just wanted to make sure, love.”
“I know. . . . Thank you.”
I shifted fully onto his body, straddling his waist. I took his beautiful face in my hands and slowly pressed soft kisses along his cheeks, down his nose, and across his forehead. Alec chuckled warmly and wrapped his arms around me to keep me pressed against him.
“My sweet girl,” he whispered after I finally kissed his lips.
Alec reached up to brush my hair out of my face. He trailed his fingertips along my jawline and a small shiver ran through me. His lips curled into a smirk as he stared up at me, his crimson eyes brimming with pure love and adoration.
“Do you believe in fate?”
“I didn’t use to,” I replied truthfully. He hummed and stroked my cheek. I leaned into his touch and smiled down at him. “But then I met you.”
“Such a romantic,” he teased.
I rolled my eyes. “What about you?”
“I’ve always believed in fate. . . . I don’t know why, because I didn’t ever really believe in a God or Heaven or anything religious, but I always believed there was . . . something. Not a higher power, but . . . some purpose behind everything that happened to me, to my sister, to anyone in the world. When I was turned, I thought my purpose was to join the Volturi, but now . . . I think my purpose was to find you, to love you and make you happy, to make you realize that you deserved so much better than how you were treated by everyone else in your life.”
I leaned down to kiss him fiercely. When I pulled back, I teased, “And you call me a romantic.”

21. ANNIVERSARY
“Sweet girl, I have a surprise for you.”
I smirked and wrapped my arms around Alec’s neck as he wrapped his arms around my waist. “A surprise? What did I do to deserve a surprise?”
Alec laughed and said, “It’s October twentieth — exactly six months since the day we met.”
“God, has it really only been six months?” I said. That day felt a whole lifetime away now.
“Mhm,” he hummed softly. He brushed my hair from my cheek and swiped his thumb along my cheekbone. I leaned into his soft hand as he murmured, “Six months since you came into my life and stole my heart.”
“You know I’m never giving it back,” I teased.
“Good,” he replied cheekily. I laughed with him and shook my head. Alec pressed a kiss to my forehead. “Beautiful girl. . . . Get dressed so I can take you to your surprise.”
“How should I dress? Casual or fancy?” I asked, moving out of his arms to head to the closet.
“Casual,” he replied as he followed me into the large walk-in closet.
I looked around at my clothes for a moment before I picked out a soft black skirt that fell to just above my knees. When Alec left the closet to change into his clothes, I grabbed his thick, knitted, tan sweater. I picked out a pair of black, chunky-heeled ankle boots.
I changed in the closet, tucking the front hem of the sweater into the waistband of the skirt. I put in a pair of brown contacts and grabbed a small crossbody bag before leaving the closet.
Alec was wearing a dark grey, long-sleeved shirt, black jeans, and a pair of combat boots. He let his eyes drag along my body, a small smirk growing on his lips, before he looked back up at me. He extended his hand to me. I grinned and took it, linking our fingers together.
“So, where are we going?” I asked as we walked through the castle.
“Well, it wouldn’t be a surprise if I told you, now would it?”
I scoffed and rolled my eyes at him, which just made him laugh. He pulled me closer to his side, his arm around my shoulders, and kissed my temple. I leaned into his side as he guided us out of the castle.
Thankfully, today was one of the few cloudy days that Volterra received in a year, so we didn’t have to worry much about our sparkling skin.
We took our time walking through the narrow, cobblestone streets. I rested my head against his shoulder and his arm slipped down to curl around my waist.
“Right in here,” Alec murmured, guiding me towards a small shop nestled between a café and a tourist shop. He led me through the narrow doorway.
I gasped when I saw that nearly every inch of the shop was lined with overflowing, yet neatly organized bookshelves.
Alec laughed when he saw my expression and pecked my cheek.
“Good surprise?”
“The best !” I turned to hug him, then pulled back and raised an eyebrow at him. “How long have you known this place was here?”
“Well, we’ve all been coming here for centuries,” he admitted quietly, looking at one of the shelves we were standing beside. He trailed his index finger lightly along the spine of one of the books. Alec looked back up at me and explained, “The same family has owned this shop since it opened. Honestly, we think they might know about our secret, but we’re the ones who keep the shop open. And, because they’re a centuries-old, family-run shop, they are able to find and obtain very rare books for us if we request them. They have connections that even we cannot forge.”
“That’s amazing. Do they usually have some rare books without you having to ask for them?”
Alec shrugged. “Sometimes. They tend to set aside ones that they think we’ll be interested in. One of us usually comes by at least once every few weeks to look through them.” He took my hand and said, “Come on, I’ll introduce you to the owner’s daughter.”
Alec led me over to the counter, where a woman in her mid-twenties seemed to be waiting for us. The moment she recognized Alec, she turned and grabbed a small stack of books from the shelf behind her.
“Ciao, Alec,” she greeted in Italian, smiling nervously at us.
“Ciao, Bianca.” He switched to English to say, “Bianca, this is my wife, Eve. I think you’ll see her come in quite often.”
“Hello,” Bianca said in a strongly accented voice. Her smile brightened slightly when I said, “Hi.”
Alec and Bianca then fell into a conversation in rapid Italian. I was only able to catch a couple words, as I wasn’t fluent in Italian yet. I couldn’t tell exactly what they were saying, only that they were talking about books.
Then, the woman’s smile widened and she carefully brought a set of three books out from beneath the counter. She set them gently in front of me and I gasped when I realized what it was.
“Oh my God, Alec. Oh my God.”
The books were a near-pristine first-edition of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, bound in three volumes, which was the norm back then. I slowly reached out and just barely skimmed my fingers over the cover of the top book. I was terrified that I would somehow damage what was undoubtedly a very expensive set.
“How the hell did you even find this? Only five-hundred copies were made for this edition!”
Alec smirked and replied simply, “Bianca and her family are very good at their job. . . . Do you like it?”
I turned to face him, looking at him incredulously. “Are you kidding? I love it!” I hugged him tightly and he laughed against my hair as his arms curled around me. I murmured into his neck, “Thank you, Alec. It’s perfect.”
“You said it was one of your favorites, and I couldn’t resist,” he said.
I pulled back just enough to see his face and I smiled at him. “You’re amazing. I love you.”
“I love you, too, Eve,” he said softly. He kissed me gently.
We finally broke apart and I noticed that Bianca had carefully packaged the books in a protective box so I could carry them back home. I thanked her as I took the package in my hands. I watched Alec as he sorted through the other stack of books that Bianca had set aside for the Volturi.
“I think we’ll just take these, Bianca,” Alec said, nodding to the package in my arms.
She nodded and quickly punched something into the register. Alec set a credit card on the counter and she quickly swiped it through the machine. A moment later, she nodded and handed back the card.
“Grazie, Bianca,” he said, tucking the card back into his wallet.
He put his arm around my waist and we walked back out of the shop. We strolled slowly through the streets of Volterra. There were a few people milling around, but as it was the middle of the day, I assumed most people were either at work or in school. I leaned into Alec’s side, content to just be close to him.
“I think I might have a new favorite store,” I said.
Alec laughed. “I thought you might. I’m glad you like your surprise.”
“I love it. Thank you again.”
“Of course, Eve.” He pressed another kiss to the top of my head. “Do you want to spend the night in our house?”
I grinned and Alec laughed.
“Come on, then, princess.”
I curled up against Alec’s side as I continued to come down from my third orgasm of the night. Alec pulled the thick, black comforter over our bodies as I hooked my leg over one of his. Alec buried his nose in my hair and rested his hand on my thigh.
“You know, this house reminds me of France,” I murmured. “It’s completely different aesthetically, but the feeling is the same.”
“Mm, I agree,” Alec said. “We have the same privacy here that we had in France. No one to hear us, or see us, or bother us. . . . Just two people completely in love and all alone.”
I could practically hear the smile in his voice, which made me grin. I looked up at him, then kissed him.
“Can I ask you something?”
“Of course,” Alec said. He brushed my messy hair away from my face and rubbed his thumb along my cheek. “You can always ask me anything, love.”
“I’m just curious about your human life, before you . . . before you were turned,” I said carefully. Alec remained silent and I quickly added, “You don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to. I don’t want to upset you.”
“I’m not upset,” my mate assured me. “I just . . . I haven’t spoken to anyone about my human life before. . . . Even Jane and I haven’t spoken much to each other about our lives before we were turned.”
“Are you sure that you want to talk about it now?”
Alec combed his fingers through my hair and nodded. “I am.”
He took a deep breath, then let it out slowly. I nuzzled against his chest and he pressed a kiss to the top of my head. He trailed his fingers up and down my back as he spoke.
“I was born in the beginning of the ninth century in England. I don’t know the exact date, but Mother said that we were born in the dead of winter. She gave birth with the help of the town’s midwife. . . . I was born first, then Jane.” Alec huffed out a small laugh. “Mother used to tell us that we would scream any time we weren’t near each other when we were babies, but when we were beside each other, we were quiet.”
“What did she look like?” I asked softly. “Your mother?”
“She resembled Jane a lot,” he answered. “Long blonde hair that she usually kept in a braid, emerald green eyes. . . . She was shorter than me, I think, but not by much. Maybe only an inch or so. I remember her being soft-spoken, and kind. No matter what anyone in the village said about us or how they treated us, she never resented us. She always made sure that we knew she loved us, and she tried her best to protect us from the worst of it. . . . She was all we had. Our father left before we were even born, so she had to take care of us by herself.”
“He left?” I asked hesitantly.
Alec nodded. “Just . . . disappeared out of my mother’s life when she told him that she was with child. At least he had the decency to marry her before he left. It protected her from being a total pariah in the village . . . at least until our powers started to show. When that happened . . . God, we were like four, maybe five? It was just little stuff at first, stuff I don’t even really remember now, but it wasn’t long before the others in the village started to notice it. They started to shun us, and then as more time passed, most refused to sell to us or trade with us. . . . I truly don’t know how we survived sometimes. When I was a little older, I was lucky enough to get a job as a farmhand, working in the field and bringing money in for my family, but it was hard. The farmer paid me less than the others because I was one of the ‘witch twins’ and he barely hired me anyway, but he was desperate for the help and I was desperate for money.”
The pain and fear in his voice made my heart twist uncomfortably. Even though this had all happened hundreds of years ago, it clearly still affected him massively.
I snuggled closer to his side, hoping that it would comfort him. Alec squeezed my thigh gently and pressed a kiss to my hair before he continued.
“Jane tried to sell the milk and cheese she made from the two goats we had, but it was never enough. People didn’t trust us and they rarely bought from us. At least we were able to use the milk and cheese ourselves. . . . But it was difficult. We went to bed hungry more often than not.”
“I’m so sorry,” I whispered.
The thought of Alec and Jane and their mother going to bed with empty stomachs simply because the other villagers feared them for something they couldn’t control saddened me. I knew that their life wasn’t easy, but to hear him speak of the struggles they faced every day made it even more real.
“Don’t be upset, sweet girl,” Alec murmured. He turned a little so that we were chest-to-chest and hugged me. He pressed his lips to my forehead. “It was so very long ago, and Jane and I . . . we survived, in a way. I’ve never known hunger or hardship since those days.”
“It’s just hard to think about what you lived through . . . and what you nearly died from,” I whispered. The memory of Alec telling me how he was almost burned to death came back through my mind. I pressed as close as I could to him.
“Don’t be upset, love,” Alec said. He ran his hand over my hair and stroked my back. “I’m perfectly fine now. I survived that night, and all the nights before it. . . . And the ones who tried to burn us suffered for their cruelty.”
I looked up at him in confusion. He moved his hand to my cheek and slowly rubbed his thumb along my cheekbone as he explained, “When the Volturi found us, they didn’t simply save us from the fire. They destroyed everyone who tried to burn us, even the few who had hid in their homes during it all. . . . We left them there to rot. The only person we buried and treated with respect was our mother. She had been killed in the mob. Aro buried her for us. We . . . we couldn’t. . . . Not after . . . what they did to her.”
After a moment of silence, I murmured, “I wish I could have met her.”
“She would have loved you,” he replied, a soft smile on his face. “She would have loved how kind you are and how selfless you are. She would have been so happy to see how clearly we love each other. She always told us that all she wanted was for me and Jane to be happy.”
I smiled and kissed him. Alec hummed and pushed my hair behind my ear, cupping my cheek in his hand.
“I do love you,” I whispered against his lips. “More than you can imagine.”
“I think I can imagine it,” he teased, laughing softly. His grin softened as he said, “I hope Mother has been able to watch me and Jane for all these years. I hope she saw me find you, and that she saw us find our way to each other despite the forces that tried to keep us apart. . . . I hope she’s seen that Jane and I have found our family with the Volturi, and that I’ve found my soulmate in you.”

20. HOME
Alec held my hand in his as we drove through the gates of Volterra, towards the rolling Italian countryside that surrounded the small city.
We were going to look at a couple nearby villas that Heidi had scouted for us. We had explained to her what we wanted in a home and she had compiled a list of ten villas for us to look at. Both of the villas we were looking at today were close to Volterra and fairly secluded, as they each came with a big estate that would not allow any humans to see or hear us from the boundaries of the property. Heidi had arranged for us to tour each property without a realtor and she had given us the keys yesterday.
We pulled up to the large, wrought iron gate that belonged to the first property we were touring. Alec quickly got out of the white Lamborghini he was driving to unlock the gate and push it open. He returned to the car and drove us up the long, smooth driveway.
“Oh, it’s gorgeous,” I breathed when the villa finally came into view.
The two-story, Renaissance era villa was made of a light beige colored stone and roofed with red terracotta tiles. There was a separate, smaller, one-story building that seemed to be a garage a bit further down the driveway. The grounds that surrounded the house consisted of a neatly trimmed lawn and, beyond that, lots of trees that would provide us even more privacy.
Alec parked the car in front of the villa and we got out. We walked towards the large, double doors of the front entrance. Alec unlocked them and pushed the door open, gesturing for me to enter the villa first.
The interior of the villa was mostly modern, though it was clear that whomever had updated the villa had tried their best to keep the original walls and architecture — old wooden beams crossed along the ceilings, the walls were a cream-colored stucco, and the floors were made of a dark grey, polished stone.
The foyer that we had stepped into allowed us to see up to the second story, which was lined with a wrought-iron railing that also lined the staircases on either side of the mezzanine.
“It really is beautiful,” Alec murmured softly as we moved to the living room, which was to the left of the foyer.
Bright sunlight poured into the room from the tall arched windows that stretched almost the entire height of the walls. The room was decorated with modern, light-grey, plush couches, a matching armchair, and a large oak coffee table. A stone fireplace was on one of the interior walls, with beautiful, Renaissance paintings hanging on either side of it. An ornate, iron chandelier hung from the ceiling.
“There’s so much light.”
I stepped into one of the sun spots. Thousands of tiny rainbows scattered across the walls and floor of the room from my crystalline skin.
Alec wrapped his arms around my waist. “I wish we never had to hide. . . . I wish I could show you the world without having to hide under clouds or in the middle of the night.”
I leaned back into him and replied softly, “I don’t care how I see the world — in sunlight or darkness. As long as you’re by my side, I’ll be perfectly happy.”
He huffed out a soft laugh, then pressed a kiss to my cheek. “You’re adorable and incredibly sweet.”
We stood there for a few more moments, simply soaking up the sun and each other’s love. Finally, we broke apart and began to tour the other rooms.
The room that led off from the other side of the foyer was a library the size of the living room. Every wall was lined with expensive, dark oak bookshelves that were currently empty. The plush carpet that covered the floor was a light grey that matched the curtains that hung over the tall, arched windows. Two very comfortable-looking, brown, leather armchairs sat in front of the windows with a small side table placed between them.
There were two more rooms on the first floor. One was an office that had a single wall lined with bookshelves, and a beautiful view to the grounds behind the house.
The other room was a large bedroom that had an ensuite bathroom and a walk-in closet that was nearly double the size of the one we had at the castle. The floor of the bedroom was made of the same dark stone as most of the villa. A king-sized bed was pushed up against one of the walls, beneath a large, horizontal window. A single glass door led out to the back of the patio.
We stepped through the door onto the patio. A large pergola covered the patio, its wooden beams wrapped in fragrant honeysuckle that kept the area well shaded. Two cream-colored couches that were meant to be out in the mild Italian weather were arranged in an L-shape around a white marble table. The tiled patio extended beyond the pergola and surrounded a large, rectangular pool.
“Mm, that pool would definitely get a lot of use,” I commented, throwing a smirk over my shoulder at Alec.
“Oh, is that so?” he replied, a smirk curling on his own lips as he approached me. Alec set his hands on my hips and pulled me back against his chest.
“Mhm,” I hummed and leaned into his touch. I enjoyed teasing him. “I mean, I doubt either of us will be able to keep our hands off each other when all we’re wearing is a swimsuit . . . or nothing at all.”
“Fuck.” Alec’s grip on my hips tightened. I could feel him start to harden as he pressed closer to me.
I giggled as I stepped out of his grasp, leaving him groaning. I turned and walked backwards towards the house.
“Come on, love. We’ve still got the second floor to see.”
Alec rolled his eyes, though he followed me back into the house. I reached out and snagged his hand in mine. He linked our fingers together and pressed a kiss to my cheek.
There were three rooms on the second floor. Two of them were bedrooms that looked nearly identical to each other, with tall, arched windows and glass doors that led out to the balcony they shared. There was a shared bathroom between the bedrooms.
The third room was a home theater. A large projection screen covered one of the walls, and two rows of couches were lined in front of it, the second row about half a foot higher than the front row.
Alec leaned close to whisper in my ear, “We could put a bed in here. . . . Could cuddle together while we watch a movie or something. . . .”
“I’m sure cuddling would be all we would be doing,” I replied sarcastically. Alec nipped my shoulder teasingly and I laughed.
“We could turn the two extra bedrooms into something other than bedrooms,” he suggested.
“Like what?”
“Whatever we want. A game room, another library, an art studio.”
I leaned into his side and said softly, “I think I’d like an art studio.”
He hummed and pressed another kiss to my cheek. “Then that’s what you’ll get.”
“You’re so sweet to me,” I said, turning to face him. Alec grinned and held me closer to his chest when I wrapped my arms around his neck. “I don’t want to look at the other house. I want this one.”
“Whatever you want, princess.”
“Are you sure? It’s your house, too.”
Alec chuckled. “You forget how long I’ve been alive, love. They’ll all look mostly the same to me. As long as you’re happy with the house, that’s all I care about.”
I stood on my toes to kiss him fiercely. Alec laughed when we broke apart. He gently brushed my hair behind my ear and stared down at me with a soft smile. There was so much love in his gaze that it sent butterflies fluttering through my stomach.
“I’ll tell Heidi to tell the realtor that we want this one,” he said. “Hopefully, we’ll be able to close within the next couple weeks and then it will be all ours.”
“We’ll finally have somewhere to escape to whenever we want to be all alone.”
“Our escape from the real world,” he said with a smile.
I kissed him one more time before we finally headed back down the stairs and out of the house.
I sat lightly on the hood of the Lamborghini as I watched Alec lock the house back up. I leaned back, pressing my hands against the warm metal when Alec turned around. I smirked when I saw him pause in his step for a moment when he saw me. I watched his crimson eyes drag along my body before he looked up again.
He walked slowly towards me and, when he reached me, gently pushed my legs apart so he could stand between them. Alec leaned down over me, his lips barely brushing mine as he breathed, “If I remember correctly, I promised to make up for our interruption yesterday.”
“You did,” I said.
My eyes flicked up to meet his. I could still see the unconditional love in his ruby irises, but it was quickly becoming clouded with lust.
Alec pressed his lips to mine and my eyes fluttered shut. I wrapped my arms around his neck, one hand drifting up to card through his curly hair. Alec leaned down over me, forcing me to lay back on the hood of the car.
One of his hands trailed down my side until he reached the hem of my white sundress, which he hurriedly pulled up so it was bunched around my waist. He groaned when his hand slipped between my thighs.
“No panties, princess?” he breathed against my mouth. He circled his fingers lightly around my clit and my breath hitched in my throat. “You had this all planned out, didn’t you?”
“It’s been too long,” I replied, tugging at his hair. “I’ve missed you, Alec.”
He hummed and pressed a kiss to my forehead. “I know, princess, I know. I’ve missed you, too.”
My mate trailed kisses along my cheeks and down my neck. When he reached the neckline of my dress, he gently slid the straps down my arms and pulled the dress down below my breasts. His mouth traveled across my chest and I moaned when he wrapped his lips around one of my nipples. My fingers tightened in his hair as he teased the sensitive bud with his teeth. His hand had wandered back between my thighs and he gently rubbed my clit again.
“Alec,” I whimpered. “Please.”
He laughed against my chest. “Easy, sweetheart. I just wanna take my time with you. . . . You deserve to be savored, Eve.”
Alec ran his tongue slowly up through the valley between my breasts. I shuddered at the feeling, arching my back. Alec’s fingers slipped away from my clit to gently press into me as he sucked a hickey onto my neck.
“Oh,” I gasped.
My hand slipped down to grasp the hair at the back of his neck. Alec groaned against my throat as I tugged at his hair. He moved his mouth up to my jaw and kissed my lips again. Eventually, my lips parted and his tongue pushed into my mouth. Our tongues slid together slowly, our makeout languid and lazy. I had to admit that Alec had a point — it was so much better to savor the moment than rushing through it.
Smoldering fire trailed everywhere that his skin touched mine. I could feel the reverence and affection he had for me in every touch, in every kiss. I hoped that he felt just as loved as I did at this moment.
“My sweet girl. . . .” Alec bit my lip gently. “Stay just like this for me. Don’t move.”
I nodded and he kissed me one more time before he made his way back down my neck. I groaned, tilting my head back against the hood of the car. I felt Alec smile against my skin as he continued to kiss a path down my chest and stomach.
He pushed my dress up again as he knelt on the ground, between my legs. He brushed his lips lightly across my inner thighs, still slowly thrusting his fingers in and out of me. Alec scraped his teeth gently against the sensitive skin of my thigh. My breath caught in my throat as my stomach fluttered with pleasure.
Finally, Alec ran his tongue through my soaked folds. A breathless gasp left my mouth and I arched my back as he locked his lips around my clit, gently sucking on the small bundle of nerves.
‘You taste heavenly, princess. Absolutely divine.’
A shiver ran through my body as Alec’s words echoed through my mind. I sucked in a breath and let it out shakily as he ate me out, using his skilled mouth and fingers to bring me closer and closer to the edge. I moaned out his name and reached down to tangle my hand in his hair once again. He groaned against my pussy.
‘Close, princess?’ he asked in my mind when my moans picked up and I began moving my hips into his movements.
“Yes,” I breathed.
‘Cum for me, then, sweet girl.’
Alec curled his fingers inside of me and I finally fell off the edge. I gasped as my back arched again and my pussy fluttered around his fingers. He groaned, nuzzling against the inside of my thigh. My entire body tingled warmly as my orgasm ran through me.
When I finally started to come down from my high, I noticed that Alec was pressing soft, feathery kisses to my thigh. He slowly pulled his fingers out of me and I whined softly at the loss. He rested his head against my thigh and smiled at me.
“Ready for me, love?”
“Mhm,” I hummed. “C’mere and kiss me.”
Alec laughed softly and pulled off his shirt as he stood again. Then, he leaned down over my body to press his lips to mine. I lazily wrapped my arms around him and pressed my tongue into his mouth. I moaned when I tasted myself on his tongue.
He reached between our bodies and shoved down his jeans and boxers. He grasped himself in his hand and moved so that the tip of his cock was just resting between my slick folds. I shivered as anticipation built in my stomach.
Alec finally thrusted slowly into me. We both moaned, our kiss breaking as he dropped his head into the crook of my neck as he bottomed out inside me. I curled my arms around him tightly. I loved feeling his body on top of mine and his cock inside of me.
‘You feel so good wrapped around me, princess.’
I groaned. I dragged my nails across his back as he began to slowly thrust into me. Alec brushed his lips against my neck, right over the silvery, scarred bite mark that remained from my transformation. A soft moan fell from my lips. He knew that spot was particularly sensitive for me.
“My perfect, sweet girl,” he murmured against my skin. Alec rubbed his hand along my thigh, gently gripping it and moving my leg so that my knee hooked on his hip, which allowed him to thrust even deeper.
I groaned and tipped my head back against the car. “Fuck.”
Alec huffed out a strained laugh against my shoulder and nipped at my skin. “Tell me how good you feel, love.”
“Feels so good, Alec,” I whispered. “Perfect. . . . You’re perfect. . . . I love you.”
Alec groaned and kissed me fiercely. His gentle grip on my thigh tightened as he fucked me harder and shoved his tongue in my mouth. I gasped into the passionate kiss and scratched my nails across his back.
A few moments later, I came for the second time. My back arched up, my head tipped back, and I clung tight to Alec as wave after wave of intense pleasure flooded my body.
Alec followed me quickly off the edge, moaning as he thrust as deep as he could. His hips stuttered slightly and his cock twitched as he filled me with his seed.
I watched him with half-open eyes, slowly and lightly dragging my nails along his bare sides. He shivered at my touch before he looked at me. He kissed me again, this time all soft and sweet, before he rested his body on top of mine. I giggled quietly and reached up to brush my fingers through his messy curls.
“Well, I think I made up for our interruption the other day,” he teased.
I rolled my eyes, but I was smiling. “You certainly did.”
I lifted my head up slightly to press a kiss to his forehead. Alec hummed quietly. His eyes fluttered shut as he rested his head on my chest. I laid my head back on the hood and closed my eyes, continuing to card my fingers through his hair.
“I love you so much, Eve,” he whispered. “So beautiful and smart and sweet and perfect.”
My heart swelled with love and I said softly, “I love you more than anything, Alec.”
Alec rested his hand on my side, his thumb just below the curve of my breast. He slowly swiped his thumb along the soft skin on the underside of my breast and I moaned lightly.
This was one of the few private moments that I wished time slowed down so we could remain in our own little world for just a while longer. We were entirely alone and basking in the afterglow of amazing, passionate sex and soaking up all the affection and love we had for each other.
A few more minutes passed before Alec sighed and reluctantly said, “We should head back to the castle.”
I frowned, but nodded in agreement. He carefully lifted himself off of me, but before he fully stood up, he bent his head down to kiss me. I smiled when he finally pulled away and Alec laughed.
He pulled his clothes back on, then offered me his hand to help me sit up. I let him pull me up and he kissed my forehead, his hand caressing my cheek lovingly.
My smile grew even bigger when he began to fix my sundress for me. He gently pulled the dress back over my breasts and slid the straps up onto my shoulders again. He pulled down the fabric that had been bunched up around my waist, smoothing his hands over it to ensure that it all fell back into place. He even knelt down and strapped my heels back onto my feet. Alec pressed a gentle kiss to my knee before he stood up again.
“Ready, my love?”
“One more kiss and I will be,” I replied with a teasing grin. Alec smirked and rolled his eyes, then kissed me again. When we broke apart, I said, “Let’s go.”

19. TRIALS
“I am so proud of you, my love,” Alec whispered in my ear.
His hands were resting on my waist as he stood behind me. I met his eyes in the mirror we were standing in front of and his warm smile made my heart flutter. Alec laughed softly when he saw my own grin and he squeezed my waist gently.
I had been promoted to the high guard this morning, six weeks after Alec and I had returned from France. The masters had presented me with my own traditional Volturi uniform, and I had tried it on as soon as we returned to our room.
It was a simple uniform. The men wore black trousers and black dress shirts while the women wore a plain, high-necked black dress that fell to our knees and had long, slightly-puffy sleeves that tightened in around our wrists. All guards wore long, hooded cloaks that just barely brushed the ground.
The shade of a guard’s cloak indicated the guard’s rank — the darker the shade, the higher they ranked. Jane and Alec had the second darkest cloaks among the guards, only behind Chelsea, who had the power to strengthen or weaken bonds between people.
“Where is your cloak?” I asked. I was curious to see how much lighter my cloak would be compared to his.
Alec moved away from me and grabbed his cloak from our closet. He walked back towards me slowly, then gently laid his cloak over my shoulders so that we could compare the difference in shades directly.
“Your cloak is darker,” Alec murmured, awestruck.
“I’m a higher rank than you?” I said, turning to face him.
I was shocked to see the obvious pride in his eyes and his bright smile. Alec took my face in his hands.
“My sweet girl,” he breathed. “It makes sense that Aro believes that you are more valuable than me or Jane. We help neutralize threats, but you will be able to tell us who needs to be taken down before they can become a real threat, as well as allow us all to communicate with each other without giving us away to our foes. Your gift will enable us to work together so much more efficiently.”
I smiled. I knew that if I was still human, my cheeks would have been burning bright red from his praise.
Alec laughed quietly, then leaned close to kiss me. I trailed my hands along his chest, gripping the fabric of his shirt and pulling his body against mine. His tongue slipped into my mouth as his hands moved from my face to tangle in my hair and wrap around my waist.
‘I am so proud of you, princess.’
I whimpered softly when I heard Alec’s voice echo through my mind. He knew by now that I always connected our minds whenever we were alone, especially when we started to get intimate.
When Alec finally broke our kiss — much to my dismay — he leaned close to press another kiss to my forehead to placate me. He ran his hand along my back and murmured, “My dear Eve, you are amazing and I cannot wait to see you at your full potential.”
Alec was just returning to our room from a meeting with Aro when I stepped out into the hallway. His eyes trailed over my body, lingering on the short skirt I chose to wear. He looked up and I just smiled at him.
His gaze darkened as he walked towards me. Alec pressed me against the stone wall, slipping one of his hands between my thighs as he growled in my ear, “You know what this skirt does to me, princess.”
He gently rubbed my clit over my panties, making me whimper softly. Alec trailed his mouth across my jaw and then down my neck. I moaned and let my head tip back to rest against the wall. Alec scraped his teeth lightly against my throat. I sucked in a sharp breath.
“But I think you wanted to tease me, didn’t you, sweetheart?”
“Missed you,” I whispered breathlessly. I reached one of my hands up to brush my fingers through his luxuriously soft, dark curls.
Alec hummed against my throat. He opened his mouth and pressed his tongue against the spot where my pulse would be if I was still human. I whimpered again.
“It has been a while since I’ve been between your pretty legs, hasn’t it?” Alec teased quietly. “Since we returned home from France. . . . Much too long for my sweet girl, hm?”
“Please,” I whined desperately as he continued to press kisses along my neck.
I could already feel the arousal coursing through my body and I knew that it would soon overwhelm the rational part of my brain.
“I want you, Alec.”
I felt him smirk against my neck. “We’re in the middle of a hallway, princess. You want me to take you right here? Where anyone could hear us? Where anyone could see us?”
“I don’t care,” I said. “I just want you, Alec.”
“Fuck,” he groaned.
Alec’s hands drifted down to my thighs. He lifted me up and I wrapped my legs around his waist. I moaned when I felt how hard he was as he grinded against me. I tangled my hands in his hair, lightly scratching my nails against the back of his neck. Alec groaned deeply, sending a wave of butterflies through my stomach. He slid my panties to the side to stroke his fingers through my slick folds.
I groaned as he continued to lavish passionate, open-mouthed kisses along my throat. I knew that soon, hickies that were a light lavender color from the venom in my veins would bloom across my throat and collarbones. Alec loved to see the soft, barely-visible marks he left on my body, even if they only lasted for mere minutes.
“You’re so beautiful,” he whispered. “My gorgeous . . . perfect . . . sweet girl. . . .”
Alec accented every word of praise with another soft kiss. Then, he lifted his head and finally kissed me. I moaned and he pressed his tongue into my mouth. His free arm curled around my waist tightly, pressing our bodies together. He pressed one finger into me and I moaned.
“Dear Zeus! Get a bloody room, for fuck’s sake!”
Alec broke our kiss to throw a possessive growl over his shoulder at Demetri. My eyes fluttered open just enough to see that the Greek tracker was smirking at us. Alec shifted us slightly, hiding my body as much as he could from Demetri’s eyes, even though the man wasn’t looking at me.
“As much as I’m sure that you would love to continue . . . this . . . Aro has requested your presence in the throne room. Both of you,” he added before he finally turned and walked away.
I groaned in disappointment when Alec gently pried my legs from around his waist and set me on my feet. He smirked half-heartedly and pressed a soft kiss to my forehead.
“I’m sorry, princess, but it seems as though we will have to wait a little longer,” he said quietly, carefully tucking a curl of my hair behind my ear.
When I pouted, Alec chuckled and said, “Tonight. I promise, sweet girl.”
I sighed, then nodded. Alec took my face in his hands and tilted my head up slightly so that he could kiss me. When we broke apart, he rubbed his thumbs along my cheekbones. I let out a soft breath as his action stirred up butterflies in my belly again.
“I miss you just as much, love,” Alec whispered. “I know we haven’t had much private time together since we came back home, but I promise that I will make it up to you.”
“Thank you,” I murmured. I stood on my toes to press my lips to his as I wrapped my arms around him in a tight hug. Alec held me close to his chest and buried his nose in my hair.
Finally, he sighed. His words were slightly muffled by my hair as he said, “We should go down. It’s not good to keep the masters waiting.”
I nodded and we finally broke apart. We moved into our room to change into our guard uniforms before we headed down to the throne room.
Felix and Demetri smirked at us as we entered the circular room. I rolled my eyes at them, following Alec as he went to stand beside Jane. She shot me a friendly smile, which I returned with one of my own. Alec glanced between us, his expression moderately bewildered but mostly relieved.
“I hear Eve’s finally made you act like a real teenager, Alec,” Felix teased, drawing the attention of the other guards in the room.
“Oh?” Heidi looked over at us, a perfectly-shaped, dark eyebrow raised in question. “Pray tell, Felix, what exactly did you catch our young mates doing?”
“I didn’t see anything, but Demetri did,” the bulky guard replied.
“They were making out in a corridor when I went to go get them,” Demetri said, causing a round of loud laughs and cheers to erupt from the others. Afton even let loose a wolf-whistle as he clapped. Demetri added loudly, “Had her pressed up against the wall and everything!”
“Atta boy, Alec!” Santiago called.
Alec groaned and rolled his eyes at everyone. I simply squeezed his hand and leaned into his side. He glanced at me and I could see the annoyance melt from his expression.
‘Love you,’ he murmured in my mind. My smile grew and he winked at me.
The doors to the throne room opened and the masters entered the room. Their personal bodyguards surrounded them, breaking off into three separate groups as the masters walked to their own thrones.
“Eve, dear girl,” Aro called.
“Yes, Master?” I asked, turning to face him.
“Link the minds of all of the guards, and link only yourself to me,” he ordered. “When the accused is brought in, link to his mind, but only so we can hear his thoughts. I do not want him to hear any of ours.”
“Yes, Master.”
I turned back. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath through my nose. It took a moment to clear my mind, but then I began to link to all of the guards in the room. I could already feel a slight, dull ache form in the front of my skull from hearing all of their thoughts overlapping each other, but I was somewhat used to it by now. Although I could hear every thought from every guard, they could only hear what I allowed them to hear. I was the filter that kept the hive mind focused so that we didn’t get distracted by one errant thought.
My lips curved into a smirk when Alec reached out to lightly brush his fingers against mine.
I used the personal link between just the two of us to warn, ‘Careful, my love. I wouldn’t want you to get in trouble.’
Mated couples weren’t supposed to show any affection between each other during the trials. Aro was concerned that we would get distracted by our mates — which was a fair concern, considering the way my mind could only focus on Alec when he touched me.
The masters at least allowed us to remain close to our mates, though I was sure it had to be for the very same reason. If we were placed too far apart from each other, we would be more focused on ensuring that our mate was safe from the threat of whoever was on trial rather than our duties.
‘Felix and Demetri haven’t even brought in the nomad, yet,’ Alec replied. His voice was silky soft, even in my mind. ‘There’s no danger from a simple touch right now, sweet girl.’
A shiver rolled down my spine. It was an involuntary reaction that happened whenever I heard Alec’s voice in my mind. There was just something so very intimate about the way his voice echoed through my mind and curled between my thoughts.
All too soon, the doors to the room opened and Alec reluctantly pulled his hand away from mine. Though I had no outward reaction to losing his touch, on the inside, I was pouting a little.
I focused back on the trial as it began. I shifted my attention away from Alec, instead testing the link between the minds of the guards positioned throughout the room. I was quite pleased to find that it had remained strong and intact without my constant attention.
I let the guard link move to the back of my mind as I extended my reach to the mind of the redheaded nomad that had been brought in on trial. I linked his mind with my own and Aro’s, though I was careful to make sure that while we could hear his thoughts, he couldn’t hear ours.
‘Well done, my darling one,’ Aro praised.
A flicker of a smile pulled at the corner of my lips before I regained control and smoothed my face back into a neutral expression.
‘Thank you, Master.’
I listened carefully to the thoughts of the nomad as Aro and Caius interrogated him, occasionally checking in on the guards and their thoughts. So far, everything seemed to be going well.
When Aro took the nomad’s hand to listen to his memories, I grew a little disoriented at the way his thoughts echoed first through the nomad’s mind and then through Aro’s only a millisecond later. Aro had assured me previously that I would eventually get used to the experience, once I had done it several times.
The nomad had allegedly created a newborn and then abandoned them, leaving the poor girl to figure out her new life all alone. Without any guidance from her creator, she had given in to her thirst and hunted in clear view of several humans.
Luckily, another nomad couple had been in the area nearby and they managed to clean up her mess — after they destroyed her. Then, they immediately came to Volterra to inform the Volturi about what had happened. Demetri had then been tasked with trying to locate the creator. It was difficult for him, as the nomads had not met him directly, but they had met his creation. Demetri was able to get the faintest flicker of the creator’s tenor from that. It took him nearly two weeks, but he was finally able to track down the creator to a small town just outside of Edinburgh in Scotland.
Aro finally released the nomad’s hand and the redhead scrambled back away from him. His eyes began to flicker around the room nervously at all the guards. His thoughts were rambling and barely coherent.
I was on the verge of opening the connection to his mind to the other guards in the room when he dropped his eyes to the floor and his thoughts calmed. It was as if he had resigned himself to his fate. We all relaxed slightly.
Then, suddenly, his thoughts betrayed him. He was going to attempt to fight his way out of this room, and he planned to attack Alec first.
All of my instincts came raging forward to take control of my body. I didn’t even realize what had happened until it was all over.
One moment, I was standing next to Alec and focusing on maintaining the links between everyone’s minds, and the next, I was standing over the dismembered body of the nomad, his head in my hands.
I quickly dropped the head, stumbling backwards in shock as I realized what I just did.
Alec put his hand on my arm and I turned into him, letting him wrap me in his arms. He held me close as I leaned into his warmth and comfort.
“He was going to attack you,” I whispered. I was desperate for him to understand what made me lose control. I clung tighter to him.  “I couldn’t let him hurt you. I couldn’t.”
“I’m okay, sweet girl,” Alec murmured softly against my hair. “Thank you for protecting me.”
He rubbed his hand along my back and I nuzzled into the crook of his neck, squeezing my eyes tightly shut.
Lavender and chamomile and candied lemon filled my lungs and forced the last remaining bits of tension and anxiety from my body. I finally fully relaxed into him.
“Eve.”
Aro’s high voice sent a chill down my spine. Alec and I slowly pulled away from each other. My mate squeezed my hand reassuringly, his lips flickering into the slightest semblance of a smile that eased my nerves the smallest bit.
Reluctantly, I finally looked away from my mate and glanced hesitantly towards the kings.
Marcus looked at me as if he completely understood why I had attacked the nomad. Maybe he had heard my whispered explanation to Alec. Caius looked annoyed, but at least he didn’t seem to be furious with me. Finally, I dared to look at Aro. He seemed relatively calm, though I knew that he could easily be hiding his anger.
“Relax, young one,” Aro said, raising his hand. “I heard his thoughts just as you did. He meant to attack your mate.”
“I’m sorry, Master,” I said softly, bowing my head in both respect and shame.
“It is quite alright, my dear one. If any one of us had been in your position, I do not doubt that we all would have had a similar reaction — regardless of our age. He was sentenced to die, anyway. No true harm has been done.”
He looked away from me to address the whole group.
“You are all dismissed.”
Aro stood and began to leave the room, his bodyguards flanking him and the other two kings and their guards following close behind. The guards began to file out of the throne room.
Alec took my hand and we started towards the door.
“Wait!”
Jane caught up to us and we turned to face her. She seemed to hesitate for a moment before she pulled me into her arms and hugged me tightly.
“Thank you,” she said. “For protecting him.”
“Of course,” I replied as she pulled away. “I will always protect him.”
Jane and I shared a small smile before she gave Alec a quick hug and walked away. Alec took my hand again as we finally left the throne room.
“You’ll always protect me, hm?” he teased gently.
“Always,” I replied with a smile.
Alec grinned and pulled me closer, dropping my hand in order to put his arm around my shoulders. He pressed a kiss to my temple.
“I hope you know that I would never let anything or anyone harm you, either,” he murmured against my skin.
I smiled. “You know, that was the first thing I thought when you pulled me into your arms that first day I met you.”
He laughed. Alec cupped my cheek in his hand and tilted my chin up so he could kiss me.

18. TRAINING
Alec held my hand in his as we walked up the steps to our chambers in the castle. He set our bags on the bed, then drew me into his arms. I grinned and wrapped my arms around his neck as I stood on my toes to kiss him.
“We’re back home,” he murmured. “We should head down to see Aro and the others. They will want to see us.”
I nodded. We broke apart, though he kept a hold of my hand as we left the bedroom.
I caught a glimpse of blonde hair around a corner and glanced at Alec. He had clearly seen it, too. I squeezed his hand and gently nudged him towards the corridor that Jane had disappeared down.
“Go say hi to her.”
Alec kissed my cheek quickly before he hurried after his twin sister. I heard him call her name as I leaned back against the stone wall, waiting patiently for him to return with my hands behind my back.
I knew that Alec and Jane were practically inseparable — at least before I came along. They were twins and had lived together for hundreds of years, but I knew that my arrival in Volterra that day in March had pushed them apart. I felt horrible for coming between them, but it wasn’t like I had really done anything other than exist.
Jane was upset that the majority of Alec’s attention and free time was focused on me now. I mostly understood her frustration, but I was also a little annoyed at her for pushing Alec away because of it. I could see how much it hurt him when she made comments about me, and the fact that she wasn’t as open to him anymore. He missed the close bond he had with his twin sister.
When Alec walked back towards me, I could see the hurt expression on his face and my heart twisted in my chest. I didn’t say anything to him. I simply took his hand when he was close enough and brushed his hair from his forehead with my free hand. I let my fingers tail along his cheek before I pressed a kiss to his cheek. I could feel him relax under my touch.
“Thank you, love,” he whispered.
I nodded and brushed my lips lightly against his. “Are you ready?”
“Let’s go.”
We found the masters gathered in the throne room. They were standing around a table that was half-hidden behind their thrones. The three of them all glanced up when they heard the door open. Aro and Marcus smiled warmly at us while Caius simply looked back down at the book he was studying.
“Ah, our young mates have finally returned, brothers!” Aro exclaimed, clapping his hands together.
He drifted closer to us and extended his hand. Alec offered his hand first, letting Aro inspect his thoughts. Excitement burned in his eyes after a moment and he eagerly pulled his hand away from Alec’s to take my waiting one.
“Well, isn’t this quite a shock?”
Marcus and Caius looked up as Aro let go of my hand. They moved closer to us in front of the thrones.
“Brother?” Caius asked.
“Our newest guard has an extraordinary gift,” Aro told them, grinning widely. “Young Eve has what I would describe as the power to create a hive mind. Essentially, she can link people’s minds together so that they can all share their thoughts with each other. She will be invaluable to us once she masters her power, brothers.”
Caius looked at me, a glimmer of something that looked shockingly like pride in his pale pink eyes.
“Alec, you will spend the majority of your time helping her train and strengthen her power, as well as continuing to work on her self-control,” Aro ordered. He turned towards me. “Eve, once your power has developed enough, you will join your mate in the high guard.”
“Yes, Master,” Alec and I said together.
We moved to leave the throne room, but Aro’s voice stopped us.
“And, since I saw just how much you enjoyed your time in France, I have decided to gift you the cottage that you stayed in. It is now yours, forever.”
“Thank you,” Alec said. I added, “It means the world to us, truly.”
Aro simply smiled and nodded. He silently dismissed us with a slight wave of his hand before he turned to join his brothers back at the table. We left the room and, as soon as the door closed behind us, Alec wrapped me in his arms and kissed me passionately. I curled my arms tight around him. When we broke apart, I grinned at him.
“The cottage is ours!” I whispered excitedly. “It’s all ours!”
Alec grinned with me. His smile softened slightly as he stared at me and my heart fluttered at how love-struck he looked.
“Alec?” I murmured after a few moments.
He brushed his lips against my cheek. “My sweet girl. . . . We should work on training your power. The faster that you are able to master it, the happier Aro will be.”
“Only if you promise that each time I get better, I get a kiss,” I teased.
Alec laughed and replied, “That’s all you want? A kiss?”
“I’ll definitely take more if you’ll give me more,” I said with a smirk.
He snorted and shook his head at me. “We’ll see how much you improve, princess.”
Over the next two weeks, we spent most of our time training my ability and then resting when I inevitably developed a headache. The more I practiced, the more control I gained over my ability. I was now able to hold a steady connection between my and Alec’s minds with barely any effort. It was almost instinctive now.
Today I was attempting to hold a connection between three people. Demetri had been convinced to be my test subject since he wasn’t needed by the masters as often as Felix was and because Jane still wasn’t very fond of me.
“Just try to keep your X-rated thoughts just between the two of you,” Demetri warned, though he was smirking. Alec and I rolled our eyes at him.
We were sitting in one of the empty rooms on the third floor of the castle, below the high guard’s floor and above the main floor of the castle. Most of these rooms were used for storage or were simply empty, waiting to be used for rare occasions like this.
The bright sun shone into the room through the long, thin windows spaced along the outer wall of the room. The sun fell partially on my arm, scattering rainbows across the room.
“I think I should try to connect to Demetri first, then Alec,” I said. “I think it will be easier for me that way, since I don’t really have to concentrate anymore to connect to your mind.
“If you think that is the best way,” Alec said with an encouraging nod.
I nodded back to him, then I closed my eyes and took a slow, deep breath to focus my mind. When I felt relaxed enough, I opened my eyes and focused on Demetri. It took more effort to connect to his mind than it ever had to connect to Alec’s, but finally, I was able to see the connection form between our minds.
‘Demetri?’ I asked in his mind, testing the connection. ‘Can you hear me?’
‘I hear you,’ he assured me. A small, proud smile curled on his lips and I smiled back at him before I looked at Alec.
As I tried to connect to his mind, I could feel the connection to Demetri start to flicker out. I clenched my jaw and attempted to focus on maintaining the link to Demetri’s mind while I attempted to connect to Alec’s mind.
‘It’s better to let her struggle. It will make her stronger,’ Alec’s voice echoed through my mind.
‘That’s a little unfair, Alec,’ Demetri chastised.
My eyes widened at the same time as Alec’s did. I had successfully connected all three of our minds for the first time. I grinned and Alec smiled with me.
“Try again,” he prompted gently. “I know you can hold the connection longer, my love.”
I nodded, letting my smile fade as I concentrated again on Demetri. It took me significantly less time to connect to Demetri. Once I was sure that the connection was stable, I focused on Alec.
He was smirking at me, clearly very proud at how quickly I had connected to Demetri.
‘I better get a good reward for this,’ I teased Alec the moment I connected to his mind.
Demetri wrinkled his nose and commented, ‘Gross.’
‘You’ll get anything you want,’ Alec replied, his smirk growing.
Demetri faked a gag as he stood. “Okay, I think that’s enough for me today. You two have fun. I’ll let everyone know that they should avoid this floor for the next few hours.” I laughed as he left the room and Alec rolled his eyes.
I moved to staddle Alec’s lap and he grinned at me, wrapping his arms around my waist.
“So reward-driven, aren’t you?” he teased.
“Only when the reward is from my handsome mate,” I replied. I brushed my fingers through his dark curls.
Alec hummed softly. He raised his hand up to gently stroke my cheek with the back of his knuckles. I sighed, my eyes fluttering shut as a small shiver ran through my body. My fingers were still running through his silky hair.
A moment passed before Alec tilted his head up to kiss me gently. I moaned against his lips and tightened my grip on his curls. I tilted my head slightly and parted my lips under his. Alec pushed his tongue into my mouth. He ran his hand up along my spine, pressing my body firmly against his.
The door opened again just as Alec started to trail his lips along my throat. I groaned in frustration when he pulled away from me.
“Very sorry to interrupt you love birds,” Demetri said. I looked up and almost laughed when I saw that he was covering his eyes with his hand. “Aro wants to see you, Alec. He’s waiting in the library.”
He left us alone again. I sighed deeply. Alec pressed a soft kiss to the column of my throat, then one more to my lips.
“I promise to make it up to you later, princess,” he murmured, rubbing his hand along my back. “I’ll meet you back in our room?”
“Sure.”
He pecked my lips one more time before we broke apart and stood up. Alec walked towards the throne room while I headed back up to our quarters on the next floor.
I took my time as I walked, letting my eyes roam over the priceless paintings that lined the walls of the castle. I loved being able to see each individual brushstroke in the swipes of paint, no matter how small it was.
The masters were meticulous about ensuring the artwork in their collection was carefully preserved and cared for so that they wouldn’t degrade. Alec had explained that if any of them ever needed to be restored in any way, Marcus preferred to restore the paint and varnish himself. Even for a vampire, he had incredible attention to detail and, with access to the Volturi’s fortune, he could get any paint color he needed.
I was looking at a Cezanne painting that humans thought had been lost for decades when I heard someone sniffling quietly, as if they were crying. I hesitated before I followed the soft sound. It led me to Jane’s room. The door to her room was cracked open barely a millimeter, but it was plenty wide enough for me to peak inside.
Jane was curled up in her plush, light grey armchair, her knees pulled up to her chest and her arms wrapped around her legs. I couldn’t see past the curtain of her long, wavy blonde hair to see her face, but her shoulders were shaking and the crying sound was definitely coming from inside her room.
I raised my hand, then paused before I did anything else. It wasn’t exactly a secret that Jane wasn’t particularly fond of me, but she was Alec’s sister, and I still had hope that we could eventually become friends. Perhaps this was my chance to start that friendship.
“Jane?” I called cautiously as I knocked on the door.
I made sure to be staring down at the floor so that when she looked up, she wouldn’t think that I saw her crying. I heard her stand and approach the door, and I looked up at her.
“What do you want?” she asked, her voice rough and her eyes narrowed in suspicion.
“I . . . I heard you,” I said carefully. “I just wanted to make sure that you were okay.”
“I’m fine,” Jane said. Her voice was ice cold.
“Um, okay,” I replied, glancing away awkwardly. “I, um . . . I’m here if you ever want to talk. I won’t tell anyone what you say, not even Alec.”
“You would keep secrets from your mate?”
I shrugged and replied, “It wouldn’t be my secret to tell him.” I turned and began to walk back to mine and Alec’s room to wait for him.
‘At least I tried,’ I thought. ‘That’s all I can do.’
“Wait.”
I looked back at Jane. She simply opened the door wider, silently inviting me into her room. I followed her, closing the door quietly behind me. We sat down in the set of matching, plush armchairs that were placed in front of the fireplace. I twisted Alec’s ring around my thumb as I silently waited for her to speak. I glanced around her room so that she wouldn’t feel pressured because I was looking at her.
“Before you met Alec,” Jane began softly, “did you feel . . . did you feel like something was missing from your life?”
I met her crimson eyes and took a moment to think before I said, “Honestly, I’m not sure. My memories from before I was turned aren’t very clear. . . . But I do remember that I felt like I never really fit in my family. My mother never wanted me, my father clearly favored Bella over me and basically just considered me her replacement, and Bella was always so wrapped up in her own drama that she didn’t care about me until I started to disrupt her life after Italy. . . . But when I met Alec . . . I finally felt like there was someone who cared about me, someone who loved me without being expected to love me.”
“Then why did you stay away?”
I looked down at my hands as tears gathered in my eyes. My voice shook slightly as I said, “As much as I knew I didn’t fit in with my family, I felt like I would be abandoning my father if I left. I knew that Bella had no choice in becoming a vampire after Aro allowed her to leave Volterra alive, but Alec had told me time and time again that I had a choice. Between their lectures and my own guilt about the thought of leaving Charlie all alone, I felt like the only choice I had was to stay and take care of my father. How could I make the choice to leave him all alone, to make him suffer the loss of both of his daughters? The man can barely cook, how would he survive without us?”
Jane listened to me silently, her crimson eyes watching me.
“I know that I hurt Alec a lot, and I will never forgive myself for putting him through that pain,” I whispered, my voice breaking, “but I was going through just as much pain. I wanted to be with him, more than you can imagine, but I just couldn’t abandon my father. I barely ate, I barely did anything other than lay in my bed when I wasn’t dragging myself through school. I cried myself to sleep every night. . . . When Alec showed up at my house that night, I thought that I was dreaming. I thought that I would never see him ever again and that thought broke my heart. And then I woke up the next morning and he really was there. . . . I have never felt more relieved in my entire life. Seeing him again broke me. I realized that nothing else mattered nearly as much to me as being with Alec. He was all I wanted, all I needed.”
“You truly love him,” Jane said. I looked up at her and saw just how shocked she looked by my words. “Even when you were human, you loved him that much?”
“I did,” I said. “From the moment he pulled me into his arms for the very first time.”
A small smile pulled at the corners of my lips as the dim memory flickered through my mind. I could almost feel his strong arms curling around my body, pulling me against his cold, hard chest as my own heartbeat and his animalistic growl echoed in my ears.
“I knew that I should have been terrified that this stranger — a vampire — had grabbed me and was aggressive towards my sister and her friends . . . but I just remember feeling safe . I knew somehow that Alec would never hurt me, or let anyone else harm me either. I didn’t realize until later that the reason he had grabbed me like that was because he thought I was in danger. Edward was snarling and Alec jumped in to protect me, without having ever spoken a single word to me before. . . . And, then, the more we talked to each other after I went back to Forks, the more I fell in love with him. It was an instant connection that only got stronger the more we interacted with each other.”
Jane was silent for a while. When she finally did speak, her voice was soft and hesitant.
“I wish I had that kind of connection with someone,” she murmured. “Even before you came into Alec’s life, I would see the other guards with their mates and I would get jealous. . . . And then you came along and took all of Alec’s time and attention and I hated you for it. You took the one person that I still had all to myself and I didn’t want to share him with you. . . . I recognize now that I really just want a mate of my own. Someone who will love me unconditionally and will care for me and be mine and mine alone.”
“Oh, Jane, I’m sure that you’ll find your mate,” I said, reaching out and taking her hand in mine without thinking about what I was doing. She didn’t pull her hand away from mine as I continued, “You will find your mate. . . . I’m sorry that I took Alec away from you. I truly never meant to get between you.”
“I know,” she sighed. Jane covered our hands with her free one. “I hope that you can forgive me for how I’ve acted, Eve. I know that I’ve been unfair and unkind to you.”
I simply smiled and said, “Let’s restart with a clean slate, then.”
Jane flashed her dazzling smile, the one that I had only ever seen her use around Alec or Aro.
“Thank you, Eve. . . . Where is my brother?”
“Oh, Aro called him down to the library for something while we were working on training my gift. I was supposed to wait for him in our room.”
“Go on, then. I’m sure he’s waiting for you by now.”
We smiled at each other one more time before I stood and left Jane’s room. I walked down the hall and into the room I shared with Alec.
He wasn’t in the room, so I assumed he must have still been meeting with Aro.
I walked to the balcony and opened the glass doors so I could step out into the warm air. I leaned against the wrought-iron railing. A soft breeze made my dark hair flutter lightly around my face while my crystalline skin sparkled in the bright sunlight. I hummed and closed my eyes, simply basking in the beautiful day.
Strong arms wound around my waist. I smiled when I recognized Alec’s sweet, familiar scent. I leaned back into his arms as he pressed a kiss to my hair.
“Beautiful girl,” he murmured in my ear.
“My wonderful mate,” I replied softly. “What did Aro want?”
“A guard found a book while on a hunt. I’ve been looking for it for a few decades, so he decided to give it to me to keep rather than adding it to the castle library.”
“That was thoughtful of him. Which book is it?”
“A first edition and first printing of Dracula by Bram Stoker,” Alec replied. “It’s binding is a little worn, but otherwise it’s in very good condition.”
“Dracula?” I teased as I turned to face him. I put my arms around his waist.
Alec rolled his eyes at me. “I never said it was my favorite, just that I’ve been searching for it for a while.”
“Mhm,” I hummed, a knowing smirk on my lips.
Alec laughed and my grin widened. I stood on my toes and pressed a kiss to his cheek. He turned his head so his lips brushed against mine as he pulled me closer to his chest.
“Aro did tell me something else,” he said quietly when we broke apart. I quirked an eyebrow up in curiosity and Alec continued, “The masters believe that you’re doing very well with your training. Aro wants us to keep it up in the hope that I will return to my normal duties within the month. Which means–”
“That he wants me to be ready to join the high guard in a month,” I whispered.
“You’ll be ready,” Alec assured me. “You have improved so much in such a short amount of time, Eve. You will be ready, my love.”
After a moment, I nodded. He pressed a kiss to my forehead. I looked up at him and he tucked a curl of my hair behind my ear, his fingers trailing along my cheek.
“There is one more thing. . . .”
When he hesitated, I grew anxious and asked, “Alec? What is it?”
Alec sighed, then said, “While we were in France, the masters were made aware of a growing newborn population in Seattle. It was . . . quite unusual for that kind of activity to happen so far north. Typically, we only see that in the Southern states and Central America. So, the masters sent Felix and Demetri to keep an eye on the situation. Jane joined them after a couple weeks. They were instructed not to interfere once they reported what the newborns were doing. The masters had hoped that the newborns would . . . take care of the Cullens for us. It . . . didn’t exactly go to plan.”
“The Cullens killed the newborns,” I guessed. My mate nodded.
“Your sister was with them when the guards found them. She is still human. The Cullens and your sister were given their final warning about turning her.”
“Did you know about this plan?”
“No,” Alec said instantly. “Aro only just told me. I would never keep something like this from you, my love. . . . That is likely why they didn’t tell me what was happening.”
“Why did he tell you now?”
“The masters recieved this today.”
Alec pulled something from his back pocket and handed it to me. I took the piece of heavy cardstock and looked down at the printed words.
It was an announcement of Bella and Edward’s engagement and wedding, which was just a month away.
“She’s marrying Edward.”
“Yes. We assume that she will be changed very shortly after.”
I scoffed and handed back the announcement. “Bella always used to say that she never wanted to get married, because of what happened with our parents and their divorce. But I guess she really will do anything for him.”
Alec seemed to hesitate before he asked quietly, “Would you ever want to get married? I . . . I know that it is important to some people, and I apologize for not asking this of you before. I assumed that you weren’t one of those people who have always dreamed of getting married.”
I shrugged. “I don’t know. I’ve never really thought about it too much. Do you want to get married?”
“I don’t mind either way,” Alec said. “But if it is something that you desire, I would happily marry you, sweet girl.”
“Then I’ll think about it,” I promised, taking his hands in mine.
Alec smiled at me and said, “That is all I ask.”

17. CONNECTION
I groaned, tipping my head back into the plush pillow under my head as Alec’s soft lips brushed along my throat. I trailed my hands along his strong back, feeling his muscles shift under my fingers as he slowly thrusted into me.
His lips skimmed along my skin to my ear. His voice was breathless as he whispered, “If I could, I would spend forever right here, worshiping your body and your pretty little cunt as if you were a goddess. My perfect little mate.”
I turned my head and caught his mouth in a deep kiss. One of my hands moved up from his back to tangle in his silky, dark curls while my other hand scratched at his shoulder. I hooked one of my legs around his hip and whimpered into his mouth when it allowed him to push even deeper inside of me.
Alec reached down to grip my thigh, keeping my leg from moving off of his hip. I groaned and he took advantage of my parted lips to press his tongue into my mouth. My fingers tightened in his hair and he moaned, thrusting into me even harder.
Every time that we had sex before this, it was always pretty soft and gentle. Passion was never an issue, but we had never had rough, hard sex like this. I was surprised at how much I was into it.
Alec broke our kiss to press his forehead against mine. I kept my eyes closed, though I dragged my hand up from his neck to stroke his cheek.
“Love you,” I whispered.
“I love you, too, princess.”
I whimpered softly and Alec laughed breathlessly. He had learned during our time together in France that I loved to be called ‘princess’ and now he was using it to his advantage at every possible moment.
“Wrap your arms around me, sweet girl,” Alec ordered softly. He kissed my cheek.
I put my arms around his neck and he quickly switched our positions so that I was on top of him, straddling his waist. His hands rested on my hips while I pressed my hands against his marble chest, slowly moving my hips under the guidance of his hands. Alec’s crimson eyes fluttered, but his reverent gaze never left my body.
‘She’s a goddess. . . . The most beautiful woman to ever exist and she’s all mine. . . .’
Hearing Alec’s thoughts was entirely different than just hearing his voice this time — this was so much more intimate. His thoughts curled around my mind, making a shiver roll down my spine and sending a warmth through my whole body that eventually settled between my thighs.
“Alec,” I moaned.
He sat up and wrapped one arm tight around my waist to pull me as close as he could. His other hand reached up to cup my cheek. I stared into his lust-blown eyes, my arms curled around him. I could tell that he was just as close to the edge as I was.
“Kiss me,” I breathed.
Alec didn’t hesitate. His hand moved from my cheek to grip the back of my neck as we made out.
‘C’mon, princess,’ he thought. Then he spoke against my lips, “Cum for me, pretty girl.”
I cried out into his mouth as I finally reached my peak, intense pleasure rolling through my body. I clung to my mate, who quickly joined me in an ocean of pure pleasure and love.
As we both began to emerge from the haze of our orgasms, Alec pressed gentle kisses across my neck and shoulder. Every soft brush of his lips across my porcelain skin spiked the remaining lust that still coursed through my body.
I hummed and finally lifted my head up from his shoulder. He pressed one final kiss to my lips and I smiled softly, resting my forehead against his.
“I heard your thoughts,” I murmured. “Just a couple, I think, not all of them. But I heard them. . . . I don’t know how I did it.”
“You heard my thoughts again?”
“Yeah.”
“Hm,” he hummed. “Why don’t we get dressed and we can try to figure out what’s going on?”
I nodded. We slowly untangled ourselves from each other and got off the bed. I pulled on a white sundress that I had got while we were in Paris, while Alec dressed himself in a light grey t-shirt and a pair of light-wash jeans.
He held his hand out towards me. I grinned and took his hand in mine, allowing him to lead me out to the field of wild lavender that grew behind the cottage. We sat down in the field, sitting across from each other.
Alec suggested, “Why don’t you try to read my thoughts now? Just focus on me and try to relax.”
“Okay.”
I rolled my shoulders, feeling the tension release from my body. I stared into Alec’s eyes and focused my mind on trying to hear his thoughts.
After a minute, I groaned in frustration when nothing happened. Alec instinctively reached out and took my hand in his, knowing that just his touch could calm me. He squeezed my hand.
“It’s alright, Eve. It takes time and practice. Try again.”
Alec didn’t move his hand off mine. I took a deep breath and let it out slowly, then tried to focus again on hearing his thoughts.
‘You can do it, love.’
I gasped softly and Alec’s grip on my hand tightened.
“I did it!” I exclaimed. “It was just for a moment, but I heard you!”
“That’s wonderful!” Alec was grinning with me. “Try again, sweet girl. I’m sure that you can hold the connection for longer.”
I nodded eagerly. Alec’s grin widened at my own excitement and he squeezed my hand again. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath as I attempted to calm down. It took me a few moments, but I was finally able to force my mind and body to relax again. I opened my eyes and focused on Alec again.
This time, I was actually able to notice the link that formed between our minds. I couldn’t explain it very well, but I just instinctively knew that our minds were connected.
‘God, she’s so beautiful in the golden light of the setting sun.’
My heart swelled with warmth and love. I knew that I would never really get used to how much Alec loved me, and how much he showed his love. He was the only one who had ever put me first and it felt so good to know that I was the one he loved and cherished most in his world.
“You will always come first to me,” Alec whispered sincerely.
I gasped and his eyes widened. “You heard me?”
“I-I did,” he said after a moment. “Eve. . . . If you can not only hear other people’s thoughts, but allow others to hear your thoughts as well. . . . Aro is going to be thrilled. You’ll be his favorite guard.”
“Oh,” I groaned, raising my hand to my head. A pounding ache had quickly spread throughout my entire head.
“Headache?” Alec guessed. I nodded. “I’m sorry, sweet girl. I should have warned you that this might happen. It’s quite common for newborns with mental gifts to get headaches from using their powers. Jane used to get terrible migraines from training her gift.”
“Can we go inside?” I asked quietly. “I think I’m done for today.”
“Of course, love. Here,” he murmured, standing and holding his hands out to me.
I took his hands and he gently helped me to my feet. I leaned against his side as he wrapped his arm around my waist and guided me back to the cottage. We laid down on the couch in the living room. I nuzzled against Alec’s chest and wrapped my arm around his waist.
“Sweet girl,” he whispered. Alec pressed a kiss to the top of my head. I pressed closer to his chest and he laughed softly, rubbing his hand along my back.
“Love you, Alec.”
“I love you, too, Eve.”
I sighed as I folded up my new clothes and packed them into my luggage. We were finally leaving the beautiful cottage in France to head back to Volterra.
Alec slid his arms around my waist from behind and rested his head against mine. I leaned back into his arms, the folding forgotten as he comforted me.
“My sweet girl. . . . I don’t want to leave either, but we must.”
“I know,” I sighed. Alec pressed a kiss to my shoulder as I said, “I just love being here and being all alone with you. I didn’t have to worry about controlling my thirst or worry about anyone seeing or hearing us. We’re completely alone here and I’ll miss that same privacy in the castle.”
He hummed softly. “I understand, princess. But I swear to you that when we are back home, we will find time just for us. . . . A few other mated guards have personal houses near Volterra that they escape to for some private time. We’ll search for one when we return.”
“Thank you,” I whispered. I turned my head and kissed him softly.
“Of course. I’ll miss our time alone, too, princess.”
I giggled, which made Alec chuckle. As our laughter faded, I pressed my body back against his. He slowly stroked his hands along my sides as he ducked his head, starting to pepper my neck with kisses.
After a few moments, I reluctantly mumbled, “If you don’t stop, we’ll end up in bed for hours again.”
Alec lifted his head and teased, “You really have improved on your self control.”
I laughed and jokingly elbowed him. He laughed with me, wrapping his arms tighter around me, like a hug. I leaned back into him, soaking in the pure love that I could feel emanating from him.
“I really am so proud of how much you’ve improved over these two months,” Alec said, his voice soft and sincere. “You have no idea how amazing it is that you, a three-month old newborn, have such control over your emotions and actions. . . . It took me and Jane nearly a year to get to the same level of control.”
“Really?” I asked, turning to face him.
Alec nodded. He raised his hand and gently stroked his knuckles across my cheek. He murmured, “You are extraordinary in your control alone, and that, coupled with your gift, which we’ve only really seen glimpses of. . . . You could be one of the most powerful vampires to ever exist.”
“You really think my gift could be that powerful?”
“Eve, with essentially no training, we’ve already seen that you can hear other people’s thoughts at will and you allowed me to hear your own thoughts,” he replied. “I’m not sure if that means that you can project your thoughts or if you can allow others into your mind to hear your thoughts, but either way, your gift is very powerful. . . . It’s like your ability is a mix of the Cullen boy’s and Aro’s abilities, and something else that is entirely your own.”
Alec tucked my hair behind my ear and pressed a kiss to the bridge of my nose, making my heart flutter. He sighed softly.
“Are you ready to go?”
“Not really,” I mumbled. Alec smiled sympathetically and rubbed his thumb across my cheekbone. Finally, I sighed and said, “Let’s go home.”
Alec grinned. I smiled back at him, knowing that his joy was because that was the first time I had referred to Volterra as my home. I had always thought of Forks as my home, even after I was turned. But now, it was clear that Volterra was the place that felt like home to me. It was where my mate had lived for hundreds of years, where we had first met, and where I had become a vampire, destined to spend eternity with Alec.
There was nothing left for me in Forks anymore. My future lay solely within the walls of Volterra.

16. PARIS
My wide eyes eagerly flickered around the street I walked down the Champs-Élysées. Alec was by my side, my hand held firmly in his. The sidewalk was lined with luxury, designer stores on one side and neatly trimmed, bright green trees on the other. I could see Alec watching me look around from the corner of my eye, a soft smile on his face.
We arrived in Paris early this morning. Luckily, it was a cloudy, overcast day, so we were able to walk the streets openly without having to take any precautions about hiding our glittering skin.
“God, it’s so beautiful here,” I said. I reached up and gripped his bicep with my free hand, pulling myself closer to his side. I closed my eyes as I pressed my nose to his shoulder and took a deep breath, using his scent to help calm my nearly overwhelmed mind.
“Not nearly as beautiful as you are,” Alec said.
I laughed and lifted my head up from his shoulder.
“You’re so sweet to me,” I murmured. He smiled and pressed a kiss on my temple. “Where are we going first?”
“Wherever you want, my love. It’s up to you.”
“Anywhere?”
“Anywhere,” he confirmed.
I grinned and Alec laughed as I started to pull him towards one of the nearby stores. He stuck close to my side as I searched through the various racks of clothes and accessories in the boutique. I glanced at the price tag of a cute, pastel pink sundress that I was interested in. But when I saw the three digit number, I flinched away, grimacing.
“Don’t look at the price,” Alec murmured quietly. “If you want something, get it.”
I glanced at him. “Are you sure? It’s expensive.”
He smirked and brushed my hair behind my ear. “My sweet girl, we have more than enough money to buy every single item in this entire store, and it still wouldn’t make a dent in our fortune.”
I smiled sheepishly. Alec chuckled softly and placed a kiss on my cheek. He repeated, “Get anything you want, love.”
I continued to search through the other dresses on the rack. I could hear two store employees speaking with each other, but they were talking in French so I couldn’t understand what they were saying. I suspected that Alec understood them, though, based on the way he laughed quietly and shook his head.
A mini dress caught my eye. I took it from the rack and held it up, tilting my head slightly to the side as I examined it. The fabric was soft and silky and slid against my fingers almost as if it was liquid, and the color was a dark, blood red.
“Alec,” I called, gaining his attention, “what do you think?”
He wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me back against his chest. He lowered his head to whisper in my ear, “Buy two of them, because the first one won’t survive more than a second after you put it on, princess.”
I turned my head to look at him. A smirk curled on my lips when I saw the lust in his eyes. I turned back and plucked a duplicate dress from the rack. Alec bent his head down to brush his lips over the bite mark scar on my neck, which made me shiver. He laughed softly.
Alec followed me through the boutique, watching with a smile as I picked out one more dress — this one was a floor-length black gown that had a deep v-neck and a slit that would run up to my upper thigh — and a pair of black high heels.
One of the employees was waiting for us at the register. The blonde girl’s eyes widened when Alec handed over a black credit card — one that I knew was linked to one of the Volturi’s many bank accounts.
She asked him something in French as she folded the dresses and placed them neatly in a paper shopping bag.
‘He is so hot. I wonder if the girl with him is just a fling. . . .’
I tensed as Alec replied in French to the girl. She handed him back the card and held out the bag to him. I took it from her, narrowing my eyes as she looked Alec over appreciatively. Jealousy coursed through me. I was on the verge of pulling Alec into a fierce kiss simply to prove that he was mine and would never be hers.
As soon as we were out of the store, Alec asked worriedly, “What’s wrong, my love?”
“I could hear her thinking about how attractive you are,” I replied, my voice bitter even though I wasn’t angry with him.
“She is nothing compared to you,” Alec said softly, lifting my chin slightly. A smile tugged at the corners of my lips at his reassurance, which made him smile. He pushed my hair away from my face and kissed my forehead. “My gorgeous little mate, you are and forever will be the only one I will ever want.”
“Thank you,” I whispered.
We began to walk down the street again, but then Alec stopped suddenly and looked at me.
“You heard her thoughts?”
I nodded, then furrowed my brows in confusion. “I . . . I don’t know how I did it. . . . I couldn’t hear your thoughts, just hers.”
“Hm,” Alec hummed. He squeezed my hand as we continued on our way again. “We can try to figure out why that is later, okay?”
“Yeah.” I looked up at him, smiling again. “Where to next?”
“Wherever you want, love.”
We spent the entire day shopping at the many luxury boutiques that Paris was known for. By the time we returned to our hotel suite that night, I was sure that all of the clothes I had bought would easily fill my half of the walk-in closet back in Volterra. A good portion of the clothes were from famous fashion houses — Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Gucci — but there were also quite a few bags from smaller, more affordable stores that we had found.
I laid back on the bed, closing my eyes and humming softly. After a long moment, my eyes fluttered open and I reached my hand out towards Alec. He moved closer and took my hand, allowing me to pull him onto the bed on top of me. He brushed his lips lightly across my cheek.
“I love you,” I whispered. “I love spending time alone with you.”
“I love it, too,” he murmured.
I turned my head to look out of the window. We could see the Eiffel Tower from our room. It was all lit up, it’s bright lights twinkling like stars against the dark sky.
Alec brushed my hair away from my face and neck. He traced his fingertip lightly across my cheek. I let out a soft sigh as he started to press soft kisses across my cheek and down my jaw. His lips trailed onto my neck and I tilted my head to give him more access to my throat. He opened his mouth and just barely let his teeth scrape against my skin. I sucked in a sharp breath, fisting my hands in the silk sheets beneath our bodies. I could feel Alec smile against my neck, right over the scar from my transformation.
He slowly began to unbutton the cream-colored satin blouse I was wearing. He pushed the fabric away from my body and I slipped my arms out of the shirt, pushing it to the floor. Alec pressed kisses along the swell of my breasts, tracing the cups of my lace bra as he reached under me to deftly unhook it. He tossed the scrap of black lace to the floor before he took my nipple in his mouth, swirling his tongue around the stiff nub as he gently massaged my other breasts with his hand.
“Alec,” I breathed.
Butterflies fluttered in my stomach as wetness pooled between my thighs. He moved his mouth to my other breasts and moved his hand down to unbutton and unzip my jeans. I helped him pull them off of my legs, along with my lacy underwear. His fingers slid between my legs, gently rubbing my clit and making me moan.
Alec pulled away from me just long enough to shed his own clothes. I sat up and, once he was naked, gently pushed him down onto the bed. I straddled his waist, smirking down at him when I saw the shocked look on his face. I rubbed my hands across his strong, bare chest while his hands settled on my thighs.
I reached down and took his hard cock in my hand. Alec’s eyes fluttered and I could feel the tension in his fingers on my legs. I slowly stroked him before I moved up the bed and slid down onto him.
My breath caught in my throat when I fully sank down onto him. Alec groaned and his grip on my thighs grew tighter. For a few seconds, I stayed completely still, just letting myself adjust to the stretch of him inside me while Alec caught his breath. Then, I slowly began to move my hips.
I moaned as a now familiar pressure began to build in the bottom of my belly, liquid heat spreading throughout my body from between my legs. Alec moaned with me, reaching one hand up to tangle in my hair and pull me down over his body.
Our lips clashed together and he began to thrust up into me, his other arm wrapping around my waist to help keep me exactly where he wanted me. I let him take control — I loved being able to not have to focus on anything except the pleasure coursing through my body while we had sex.
“You feel so good, my love,” Alec breathed. He pressed kisses along my cheeks and nose and jaw. “You’re taking me so well, sweet girl.”
“I love the way you feel inside me,” I whispered.
I buried my face in the crook of his neck as a shockwave of pleasure rolled through my body, moans tumbling out of my mouth.
Alec groaned and weaved his fingers into my hair, tugging my head up from his neck.
“No hiding. I want to see you come undone, pretty girl.”
I whimpered, his words sending butterflies fluttering in my stomach. Our crimson eyes were locked together. I gasped softly as a particularly rough thrust made stars dance on the edge of my vision. Alec’s hand moved from my hair to gently grip the back of my neck as I dropped my forehead down to rest against his.
We were enveloped by the heady scent of us. His sweet aroma of chamomile tea and lavender and sugared lemon mixed with my own decadent scent of roses and vanilla and honey. It filled my lungs and clouded my mind until the only thought my brain could form was Alec and how good it felt to have him wrapped around me and inside me.
“I love you,” I moaned breathlessly. “I love you, I love you.”
Alec’s eyes rolled back as he groaned, his grip on my waist and neck tightening as his hips began to lose their careful rhythm.
“I love you,” he murmured when he looked back at me. He brushed my hair away from my face, then trailed his fingers to my mouth. I swirled my tongue around the two fingers in my mouth and Alec groaned, “My perfect, sweet girl. . . . Let go for me, princess. Let me feel you fall apart on my cock.”
I sucked in a sharp breath as the pressure that had been building between my thighs finally exploded. My eyes fluttered shut as my body tensed, tsunami waves of pleasure rolling through my whole body. Faintly, I heard Alec groan as he came with me.
When the intense pleasure started to wear off, I moved off of him and cuddled up against his side instead. My body was tingling pleasantly, an after-effect of my intense orgasm. Alec brushed his hand over my hair and pressed a gentle kiss to my hairline. My heart swelled with love, the way it always did when we basked in the afterglow of our intimate moments. I kissed his chest, then nuzzled into the crook of his neck.
“Do you want to go anywhere or do anything tonight?” he asked softly, twirling a strand of my hair around his finger.
“What is there to do at night?”
“We could go sightseeing. A lot of the main attractions are lit at night. The Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Notre Dame. . . . It will also be quite a bit less crowded than they are during the daytime,” he explained. He pressed a kiss to the top of my head.
I hummed. “Okay. I just want to spend the whole day at the Louvre tomorrow. I want to see all the exhibits.”
Alec laughed softly. “As you wish, my love.”
After we cuddled for a while longer, we got up and got dressed to go out. We spent the rest of the night walking around the beautiful city of light. Alec took me on a midnight tour of all the iconic landmarks of Paris, adding detours to his favorite hidden gems in the city as well.
There was a tiny bookstore within walking distance of the Eiffel Tower. It carried rare and special edition books that we spent a good half hour looking over. He even took me down into the catacombs, where we saw bones and skulls stacked on top of each other from the floor to the low, stone ceilings.
“This is kinda creepy but also really pretty,” I said quietly.
“Hauntingly beautiful,” Alec agreed softly.
We finally climbed out of the catacombs, emergency onto the street. Dark clouds covered the sky, giving us cover from the rising sun.
“What time does the Louvre open?” I asked.
“Nine.” Alec glanced at his watch. “If we walk there now, we will arrive just as they open the doors.”
“Perfect!” He laughed lightly, wrapping his arm around my shoulders as we began to walk down the streets.
Various scents assaulted my acute nose — bread and pastries from the bakery we walked past, various flowers from the shops that were unloading their fresh deliveries, cigarette smoke from a few locals that were sitting and enjoying their morning coffee. I was getting better at not focusing on the scents, which helped me not get so overwhelmed.
Alec also took me out to hunt every other night while we were in the city. Constantly soothing the scorching flames in my throat helped keep me from losing control when we were around so many humans. I still didn’t trust myself to get too close to any humans, but Alec was always careful to keep us a fair distance away unless we absolutely needed to go near them.
I gripped Alec’s hand tightly when I saw the iconic crystal pyramid that stood outside of the museum.
“Excited, princess?” he teased gently.
“Of course! I’ve wanted to visit the Louvre since I was in middle school,” I said. I glanced at him, narrowing my eyes. “How many times have you been here?”
Alec smirked. “More than ten times, love.”
“You’re going to be my personal tour guide, then,” I ordered with a smile.
He laughed and said, “As you wish.”
We entered the museum and, as I asked, Alec took charge and began to lead me around on a tour of the exhibits. He spoke quietly in my ear, describing and detailing the history and interpretations of each painting and sculpture that we passed. Between the beautiful, inspiring artwork and his soft, entrancing voice, I knew that this would be one memory that I would truly cherish for the rest of my existence.
We finally returned to our hotel room after the sun went down. Alec followed me out onto the balcony of our suite, curling his arms around my waist as he brushed his lips against my neck. I hummed softly and tilted my head to the side, leaning back into his embrace.
“Paris has been amazing,” I murmured. “Thank you for taking me.”
“Of course, Eve.”
“Are we going to stay here for the rest of our trip?”
“If that is what you would like,” he said. “It is entirely your decision, my love.”
“I think maybe one more day here, and then go back to our cottage. I know that I’m getting better at controlling myself, but I like not having to worry about losing control.”
Alec hummed and said softly, “I understand. . . . We will leave tomorrow night, after sundown. We’ll arrive at the cottage by dawn and spend our last few weeks there.”
“Perfect,” I whispered, turning in his arms to face him. I leaned up and pressed my lips to his.

15. POWER
Alec nuzzled his nose into my long, dark hair as I cuddled closer to him, his arms wrapped around me. I hummed quietly and rubbed my cheek against his chest as I wrapped my arm just a bit tighter around his waist. My foot slid up along his shin as I hiked my leg higher over his thigh. Alec gently scratched my back.
I had no idea how we would ever get used to not being curled up together all the time once we returned to Volterra. We had been tangled together for practically the entire week since we arrived at the little cottage — when we weren’t making love for hours and hours.
It was almost as if we were trying to make up for all the years, decades, centuries that we hadn’t been able to be together.
“I wish we never have to leave here,” I whispered. “It’s so beautiful, and I love being all alone with you, with no one else around for miles.”
“I don’t want to leave either, sweet girl,” Alec murmured against my hair. “But we must, eventually. . . . Don’t think about it now, my love. We still have seven entire weeks left to do whatever we wish.”
I nodded slowly as my eyes fluttered open.
The golden light of the setting sun was making our crystalline skin shimmer faintly, making us look as if we were covered in very fine glitter. The lavender flowers that grew wildly around the field behind the cottage swayed in the slight, warm summer breeze all around us. We were laying on a blanket that we had taken from the cottage and spread on the ground.
“Surprising that the scent of the flowers isn’t overwhelming,” Alec murmured.
“As long as I don’t focus on the smell too much, it’s not too hard,” I replied.
“You heard me?”
“Of course I did,” I replied, lifting my head up from his chest to look at him in confusion. Alec sucked in a shocked breath and my throat tightened. “What is it?”
“Eve . . . those were my thoughts,” he told me. “I was thinking those things, not saying them aloud.”
I sat up quickly and Alec followed me, gently laying his hand on my own. I relaxed at his touch, though only slightly. My eyes flickered around quickly as my mind raced with questions.
How could I hear Alec’s thoughts? Why could I only now just hear his thoughts? Why couldn’t I hear him all the time? Did something specific have to happen before I heard someone’s thoughts, like how Aro needed to touch someone to hear their thoughts? Would I be able to hear other people’s thoughts, or only Alec’s?
“I-I can hear your thoughts?”
“It certainly seems like you can,” he murmured softly. “Are you alright?”
“I . . . I’m not sure.”
Alec nodded. He asked kindly, “Are you overwhelmed? Confused? Or something else?”
“Overwhelmed and confused, I think. More confused than anything. . . .” I looked up at Alec. “Why did it only show up now? I thought you said that powers appeared as soon as we wake up from the transformation.”
“Most abilities do, but some do require some time and training to develop,” he explained. “Typically, the stronger a power is, the faster it appears, but that’s not always the case. . . . Although, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a power appearing weeks after someone wakes.”
“Did your power appear right away?”
“Yes.”
I nodded slowly, looking back at the ground. I rolled my bottom lip into my mouth nervously. A moment later, I asked, “Will I be like Edward? Or Aro? Or . . . or something else?”
“Unfortunately, there is no way to truly know that yet, my love,” Alec said softly. “We will have to wait and see, I’m afraid. . . . But I will be right here by your side for it all. You will not deal with this alone.”
I leaned into him and he instantly wrapped his arms around me and pulled me onto his lap. I nuzzled into the crook of his neck as my arms curled around his waist. My mate rubbed his hand along my back, trying to comfort me.
“I love you, Eve. We will deal with this together, okay? You don’t have to be afraid, sweet girl.”
“I just don’t want to hear everyone all the time,” I whispered. My words were muffled against his soft skin. “Bella said that it’s hell for Edward. . . . He never has a moment of peace.”
“Don’t get ahead of yourself, love,” he murmured. “It is very likely that your power will be nothing like Edward’s power, or Aro’s, or anyone else’s. It is extremely rare that there are two vampires with the exact same ability. It may even be impossible. The Volturi certainly hasn’t seen any two exact same abilities before. . . . Just try to relax, my love. We don’t have to focus on it right now, while we’re entirely alone with no one else around us for miles . The only thoughts you will hear while we are here are mine and yours.”
I let out a long, steady breath and let my body relax in his arms. Alec pressed a kiss to the top of my head, then suggested, “Let’s spend the night outside. We can lay back down and just look at the stars all night.”
I smiled and said, “Only if you point out the constellations to me and tell me the myths they got their names from.”
Alec laughed and agreed, “Deal.”
I lifted my head from his shoulder and he leaned close to kiss me. When we broke apart, we simply stared at each other for a while. He lifted his hand and cupped my cheek gently, brushing his thumb along my cheekbone. My eyes fluttered shut as I leaned into his touch. He brushed his lips lightly across my cheeks, then my nose, until he finally kissed my lips.
“Lay down with me, my beautiful, sweet, little mate.”
I let him pull me down with him as he laid back on the blanket. Alec pulled another blanket over us just enough to cover our naked bodies up to our waists. I curled up against his side again, hooking my leg around his as I laid my head on his chest. Alec tangled his hand in my soft curls again as he nuzzled into my hair and took a deep breath. He hummed and pressed one more kiss to the top of my head.
I looked up at the sky, which was finally beginning to darken as the sun drifted below the horizon. The various constellations were becoming more visible by the millisecond. I recognized some of them, but others were entirely lost on me.
Alec’s voice was soft as he began to speak.
“Most constellations are named after prominent figures in Greek and Roman mythology. . . .”
The flames that burned through my throat were getting more and more intense the longer we stayed secluded in our little cottage. Sometimes, it was easy to ignore, but other times, soothing the burn was all I could think about. Venom flooded my mouth every time I even thought about sinking my teeth into the soft flesh of someone’s neck and letting their sweet blood burst into my mouth and pour down my throat to soothe the burn.
“Alec?”
We were laying in bed again, the sheets tangled around our bare bodies, which were wrapped around each other.
“Yes, love?”
“I . . . I think I need to feed again,” I murmured.
He hummed. “I assumed that you would need to feed soon. Shall we get dressed and go hunt now?”
“I don’t think I can wait much longer,” I admitted, reaching up to rub my throat as if that could help.
“Then we should go,” Alec replied. He kissed me before we untangled our limbs to get out of bed.
I walked over to my suitcase and pulled out a pair of black skinny jeans and a burgundy long-sleeve shirt. I put on my clothes, then brushed the tangles out of my hair that Alec’s hands had created. Once we were both dressed and freshened up, we went downstairs. We put on our shoes and Alec grabbed the keys to the car.
“Where are we going to hunt?” I asked as we walked out to the car.
“Aro mentioned that there is a small village nearby,” Alec said, opening the door for me. I smiled softly at him before I climbed in and he shut the door. He got into the driver’s side and continued to speak as he started the car, “He said that it is fairly secluded and would likely be a good place for your first hunt. We should be able to find a couple people that are walking around alone.”
I nodded slowly, my eyes staring blankly out of the window as he drove. I had never hunted before and I was nervous that I would somehow mess up and break one of the rules the Volturi enforced. I knew that Alec would clean up any mess that I made, but I didn’t want him to have to clean up after me.
Alec laid his hand on mine, easily drawing me out of my thoughts. He said, “I know you are nervous, Eve, but I promise you that everything will be okay. We’ve all made mistakes before. It happens, sweet girl.”
“But I’ve already made mistakes,” I replied. I looked down. “Aro sent us here so that I could learn how to control myself. I can’t mess up again.”
“You are far too hard on yourself, Eve,” Alec said gently. He rubbed his thumb along my own. “You have more control than most newborns, my love. You don’t think so because you did make a mistake and you have never seen another newborn, but you do.”
I nodded. The rest of the drive to the nearby village was spent in silence. Alec found a place to park on one of the narrow streets. He moved to get out of the car, but I grabbed his arm and pulled him back.
“Alec, are you sure that I am ready for this?” I asked. Anxiety thrummed through my veins, my fingers tight with tension as they gripped his arm. “What . . . what if I lose control?”
“I trust that you will be able to control yourself enough for this, but if you can’t, then I will stop you. I won’t let you go feral, my love. . . . Eve, you have been doing so well, and there aren’t too many humans out here right now.”
When I didn’t say anything, Alec offered, “Sweet girl, if you are truly so worried about losing control, then I can hunt for us and bring one back for you.”
I shook my head and finally released his arm.
“No. I should learn how to hunt.”
“Are you sure?”
“I am. . . . Is it awful that I’m relieved we don’t have to hunt in Volterra?”
Alec smiled understandably. “Of course not. I much prefer to let Heidi bring us our meals, too. In the castle, we don’t have to control our instincts or worry about losing control surrounded by humans. There is no risk.”
I leaned over the center console and kissed him.
“Thank you, Alec,” I murmured against his lips.
“Of course, sweet girl.”
He reached up and tucked my hair behind my ear. He murmured, “We cannot use the most common rouse for hunting, I don’t think.”
“Why not?”
Alec smirked and replied, “To learn, you have to watch. And although you are very level-headed for a newborn vampire, I don’t think you will be able to control yourself if you see me flirting with another woman.”
A deep growl rumbled through my chest and Alec said, “She would only be my meal, Eve. You know that you are the only one I want.”
I closed my eyes and shook my head, trying to get over the jealousy that had taken control of my body. Alec took my hand in his and squeezed my hand gently.
“I love you, Eve.”
His words were the push I needed to gain control of myself again. I let out a breath, then put my face in my hands and groaned in embarrassment. “God, I feel like I’m fucking fourteen years old again with the way I can’t control my fucking emotions.”
I heard Alec stile a laugh and my hand shot out to slap his chest. He grunted painfully and I quickly lifted my head to glance at him, an apology tumbling from my lips before I hid my face again.
“My love, it’s perfectly fine,” he assured me. Alec gently pried my hands away from my face, but I kept my eyes on my lap and just listened to him. “Do you see what I mean when I say that we cannot hunt with that method? I trust your control to an extent, but I am not naive enough to believe that you can handle that. . . . I am not sure that I would be able to handle you flirting with your own meal.”
I looked up at him. His hand came up to cup my cheek, his thumb swiping along my cheekbone. His eyes, which were very nearly black from not feeding in three weeks, stared into mine.
“Are you ready to do this, sweet girl?”
I hesitated for a moment before I nodded. Alec smiled warmly and kissed my cheek. But this time, when I went to get out of the car, he stopped me.
“If you can handle this hunt, I think we should visit Paris,” he suggested. “Your control has improved enough that you can handle going to the city, as long as you can control yourself during this hunt.”
“Really?” I asked excitedly.
Alec grinned and nodded. “Good deal?”
“Yes!”
He laughed and squeezed my hand gently. We got out of the car and began to walk down the streets. He took my hand in his, keeping a gentle but firm grip on me.
“Do you have a plan?” I asked.
“Loosely,” he said. “I thought that we could walk around the village and look for two people who are in as secluded a space as we can find. We are quick enough that they won’t be able to scream or run before we drain them.”
I nodded. Alec’s grip on my hand tightened slightly as we approached a few humans. They were on the other side of the street, but they were still close enough that I could feel the venom flood my mouth when the scent of their blood reached me. White-hot flames shot through my throat and I reached up, rubbing my hand along my neck.
“Eve?” Alec murmured worriedly.
I swallowed down the venom and dropped my hand back to my side. “I’m okay. Just really thirsty.”
“Hold on just a little longer, love. It shouldn’t take long to find what we need.”
We discreetly checked every side street and alley as we walked past them. Luckily, it didn’t take us long to spot two men talking quietly in a dark alley behind a pub.
I glanced at Alec. He nodded slightly, but whispered, “Wait just a moment, sweet girl.”
I took a small step closer to his side and turned my head towards his shoulder. I took a deep breath and let his sweet scent of chamomile and lavender and candied lemon dull the scorching flames that the men’s blood was sending through my throat. It was a small relief, but it helped me keep myself from running into the alley and ripping into their necks.
“Are you ready?” Alec asked after a few seconds.
“Yes,” I said, lifting my head up. My eyes flicked over to the men again, who were smoking. My nose wrinkled — I hated the smell of cigarettes even as a human, and now it was exponentially worse. “I’ll take the one on the left.”
“Okay. . . . Now.”
We ran towards the men, reaching them before they could even finish blinking. I grabbed the man who was leaning against the building to the left of us. I pressed my hand over his mouth before my teeth tore into the flesh of his neck. He tried to fight me off, but I was far too strong for him to move me even a millimeter. I let my hand fall from his mouth as he fell limp in my grasp.
His warm blood instantly soothed the inferno in my throat. It wasn’t as sweet as the blood of the tourists that Heidi found for us — it was slightly bitter and tasted faintly of cigarettes — but it was enough to fill my stomach.
When his veins ran dry, I let the man fall to the ground. I stared down at his body as I wiped the blood from my mouth with the back of my hand.
The man had to be in his mid-thirties, with a bald head and a slight beer gut. I noticed there was no wedding ring on his finger. That was good — perhaps no one would miss him now that Alec had also drained his friend.
I looked up from the dead man at my feet and met Alec’s crimson eyes. He was grinning proudly at me, his teeth stained red from the blood of the man that had been his meal. He stepped over the dead man at his feet and kissed me, licking the blood from my lips. He pulled back and brushed my hair behind my ear with a smile.
“Looks like we’re going to Paris, my love.”

14. TOGETHER
Alec slowly lifted his hand and gently brushed my hair away from my face, his fingers trailing along my neck. He cupped my cheek and tilted my head up so he could press his lips to mine as our eyes fluttered shut. Alec’s other arm curled around my waist and he tugged me carefully against his chest.
I moaned, my hands coming up to card through his dark curls. He hummed softly as I wrapped my fingers in his hair. I smiled into our kiss, which made him laugh quietly against my lips. I pressed my tongue into his mouth and moaned.
How was it possible that he tasted even better than he smelled?
His hands traveled across my back, down my waist, and over my ass until they landed on my thighs. He gently gripped them as he started to lift me up. I helped him by jumping up and wrapping my legs around his waist.
Alec trailed kisses along my jaw and down my neck, staggering forward until my back was pressed against the stone wall. I groaned, tipping my head back as I gripped his hair tighter. Alec growled lowly against my skin and I shivered as liquid heat pooled in the bottom of my belly.
I sucked in a sharp breath as his lips trailed over every centimeter of skin that wasn’t covered by my dress. He paused for a fraction of a second with the tip of his nose at the top of the valley between my breasts. I felt his tongue flick out to lick at my chest and I tightened my legs around him.
Barely half a second passed as Alec carried me upstairs. My eyes darted across the room quickly and I realized that the entire second floor of the small cottage was just one large bedroom, with a small closet and a sizable bathroom tucked in the corner.
My attention was quickly pulled back to Alec as he laid me gently on the bed. His body covered mine as his mouth continued to travel across my throat.
“Alec,” I breathed when he nipped gently at my skin. My thighs clenched as the liquid heat in my stomach began to drift down between my legs.
I moved my hands from his hair. Alec whined quietly and I giggled, then gripped the bottom hem of his shirt. I started to pull at it and Alec sat up, quickly removing his shirt and tossing it to the floor.
My breath caught in my throat as my eyes trailed over his bare chest. I had never seen him without a shirt on before. I reached out and ran my fingers lightly along his stomach, tracing the lines of his abdomen. I was a little surprised at how muscular he was. I had expected him to be more lean and lithe and slender than he was. He certainly wasn’t as big and bulky as Felix or even Demetri, but his body was definitely more toned and defined than I thought it would be.
“You’re beautiful,” I whispered. My eyes flicked up to meet his.
Alec grinned down at me. He leaned back down over my body to kiss me again. I slid my hands along his strong back, groaning when I felt his muscles move under my fingers.
“My sweet girl,” he whispered, his lips brushing against mine. “Can I take your dress off?”
I nodded slowly. Alec’s soft touch was feather-light as he pulled the thin straps of my dress off my shoulders. His lips trailed along my neck as he kissed his way across my chest. I moaned, reaching up to once again tangle my fingers in his silky curls. Alec pulled the zipper that ran down the side of my dress, then slowly pulled my dress down my body. I lifted myself up a bit to help him. I finally kicked it off, sending it to join his shirt on the floor.
I stared at Alec as his crimson eyes scanned over my body. His fingers gently traced along my skin, creating a path across my collarbone and down the center of my chest. His index and pinky fingers lightly brushed along the sides of my breasts. I inhaled sharply as my arousal spiked at his soft touch and he smirked at me.
Alec leaned down and peppered kisses along the path his fingers had just traveled over my skin. I sighed breathily and my eyes fluttered. When his lips reached my belly button, Alec began to trail his kisses back up my torso until his lips met mine again.
“You are gorgeous,” he whispered. He nudged his nose against mine gently. “So beautiful and pretty. . . . Absolutely perfect, and you’re all mine.”
I giggled as he pressed his forehead against mine. Alec grinned with me, then kissed me again.
My hands slid from his hair, down his muscular back, and down his sides. When I reached his jeans, I hooked my fingers through the denim belt loops, intending to pull his hips against mine, but the loops broke the moment I put the slightest pressure on them.
Alec tried to smother his amused laugh as I huffed in annoyance. He broke away from me to pull off his jeans and boxers. As soon as he was completely bare, he crawled over me again and settled between my legs.
“Are you sure that you want this, Eve?” Alec asked. “I want you to be absolutely sure that this is what you want, my love.”
“I am sure. I promise, Alec. I want you.”
He nodded. “Okay.”
Alec kissed me softly. One of his hands slid down the length of my body as he began to move his body lower and lower. He slipped his fingers under the waistband of my lace panties and began to slowly tug the fabric down my legs. He tossed them to the floor with the rest of our clothes.
My body shuddered when he trailed his fingertips lightly along the inside of my thigh. His eyes were locked on mine as he ran two fingers through my soaked folds. I moaned when he slowly circled his finger around the small bud of nerves at the apex of my sex. He gently added more pressure to my clit, watching my expression closely from his place between my legs.
Alec only broke our gaze when he dropped his head down. My back arched up off the bed as I sucked in a sharp breath when he ran his tongue slowly through my pussy. He traced the tip of his tongue around my clit and I groaned.
I reached down, tangling my fingers in his hair. One of his hands gripped my thigh gently, keeping me spread open for him. His other hand was between my legs, slowly stroking through my folds while his mouth focused on my clit.
I moaned loudly and tugged at his hair. Alec groaned against me, the sound making my stomach clench with pleasure. His tongue dragged through my slick folds and circled around my clit.
“Alec,” I breathed. “Please . . . . I need you.”
He placed one last gentle kiss to my clit before he lifted his head up from between my thighs. His lips and chin glistened with my wetness. He crawled up my body again and I pulled him down to kiss him passionately as soon as he was close enough. My nails scratched across his back as our tongues clashed together messily. I could taste myself in his mouth and feel the sticky wetness that coated his skin smear across my face.
His hand drifted between our bodies. My breath caught for a moment when I felt the tip of his cock slip between my folds and push against my entrance.
“Are you ready, Eve?”
I nodded. “Yes. . . . I love you.”
“I love you, too,” he whispered as he began to push into me.
I gasped, my nails digging into his shoulders, as he slowly pressed his cock into me. Alec groaned lowly. My eyes fluttered shut when he was finally fully in me.
“Uh-uh, princess,” Alec said, his breath brushing my cheek. “I want to see your beautiful eyes as I fill your pretty cunt.”
I opened my eyes and stared up at his beautiful face. His own eyes were half open, and his face clearly showed how much pleasure he was in.
“That’s my good girl,” he murmured.
Alec began to slowly thrust his hips. I moaned as his gentle movements fanned the flame of pleasure that gathered in the bottom of my stomach. He brushed his thumb along my cheek.
“Feels so good,” I breathed.
“I know,” he said softly. “You feel like Heaven to me, princess. . . . Look at you, taking me so well. My perfect girl, aren’t you?”
“Alec,” I moaned, arching my back again.
He groaned as my breasts pressed against his chest. He pushed his fingers into my hair and tugged my head up to kiss me fiercely. I hooked my legs on his hips as we devoured each other, our kiss a mess of clashing lips and tongues.
We lost ourselves in our love and each other’s bodies. It was as if once we started, we couldn’t find the will to break away from each other.
By the time we finally untangled ourselves from each other, the moon was high in the sky. It shone silvery light down on us through the open window as we cuddled close together on the bed.
I was curled up against Alec’s side, my head resting on his chest and one of my legs hooked around one of his. He was combing his fingers though my long hair slowly, his other hand lightly stroking along my thigh. I was lazily tracing my fingers across his chest.
“Sweet, beautiful girl,” Alec whispered against my hair. I tilted my head up to be able to look into his eyes.
We smiled tiredly at each other. He bent his head down to press a kiss to my forehead. I hummed quietly.
“Thank you.”
“For what?” I asked, furrowing my brows in confusion.
“For trusting me enough to be your first lover.”
“You’re the only person I’ve ever really had feelings for, and you’re my mate,” I said. “There’s no one else that I would ever want to be with.”
“Still,” Alec replied with a small smile, “I am very grateful that you allowed me the privilege of being the only person who has seen your body, touched you intimately.”
I giggled and leaned my head up to kiss his jaw. I murmured, “Thank you for being so incredibly sweet and gentle with me.”
I rested my head on his chest again, nestling into the natural groove at his shoulder.
After a moment of hesitation, I asked quietly, “Have you had any other lovers before?”
“Never.”
I lifted my head to look up at him again. “Never? Not in all the decades and centuries that you’ve lived through?”
“No,” he said immediately. “When I was still a human, no one wanted to even speak to me or Jane, let alone be close enough to get intimate. And then, when we were turned, Marcus explained to us early on about how we each had a mate that was our destined partner. I knew from that moment that I wanted to wait for my mate. . . . I just couldn’t even imagine meeting my mate and having to explain to them that I had been with someone else when I knew that they — you — would be the love of my life.”
“Such a romantic,” I teased him gently.
Alec rolled his eyes and I laughed. I pressed a quick kiss to his lips.
“I love you, Alec,” I murmured. “Thank you for waiting for me. I’m only sorry that you had to wait so long.”
“I would have waited thousands of years just to spend one day with you,” he said softly. He moved his hand from my thigh to brush a stray lock of hair away from my face. “All that time was more than worth it to have you here with me now.”
I smiled as his words warmed my heart. No matter how much I teased him about it, I absolutely loved that he was so romantic and thoughtful. No one had ever cared for me the way he did. He was completely devoted to me, just as I was dedicated to him.
I rested my head back on his chest. My eyes traced along the stone walls and the wooden beams that held up the thatched roof. The cottage was clearly very old, but it seemed that it had been cleaned at least somewhat frequently. It didn’t smell musty or as if it had been sitting unused for years. The Volturi must have had someone come by to keep the place clean and usable at a moment’s notice.
“Do the Volturi have places like this all over the world?” I asked softly.
“Yes. Most are houses, like this, but others are apartments,” Alec said. “We primarily use them for when we are out on missions. Sometimes, we can request to use a certain residence for our own personal use. The masters rarely deny a request.”
A moment passed before I asked him, “Is there anywhere that you haven’t been that you would like to go?”
Alec remained silent for a moment, his fingers lazily combing through my messy hair.
“I’ve never been to Japan. It would be challenging to be in the cities, surrounded by so many humans, but I want to see their culture and their history. It is very different from what I saw in Europe in the centuries that have passed. . . . Where do you want to go, my love?”
“Anywhere,” I said. “I’ve only ever been in Forks, then Italy, and now in this tiny village in France. I never really thought I’d be able to travel.”
“I promise I’ll take you anywhere you ever want to go,” Alec said. “At least once every year, we will go somewhere new.”
“Really?” I asked excitedly, looking up at his face.
Alec smirked at me. “Of course, sweet girl. We can go anywhere in the world and just explore the cities together.”
“I’ll have to make a list, then,” I said with a smile. Alec chuckled and pressed a kiss to the top of my head.
“Make a list. Add to it whenever you think of a new place to go or something to see,” he said.
Alec moved out from under me. I rolled onto my back as he knelt over my body, his hands on either side of my head. The tip of his nose barely brushed against mine.
“I want to cross every single city off the list with you. I want to walk the streets of Rome and see the temples in Greece and walk the beach in Sydney in the middle of the night, and I want you beside me for every single moment,” Alec murmured.
