 "I was hired by the New Yorker in 2002 to photograph Robin Williams, and after doing my research what stood out most for me was that he was a very physical comedian. I came up with this idea to photograph him swinging from a chandelier in a grand hotel room. Most publicists shoot down these kinds of wild ideas, so I didn’t tell anyone what I was up to, but rigged up a chandelier at the Waldorf Astoria hotel for him to swing from. When Robin got there and saw what was happening, he lifted up his shirt and showed me this enormous scar on his shoulder. He’d just had surgery and couldn’t so much as lift his arm. He was so disappointed! He really felt bad about not being able to do it, because he loved the idea and really wanted to help me accomplish my vision. 

Unlike most Hollywood stars, he was unfazed by his success and position. He talked to everyone from stylists to the crew, to the hotel staff. We ended up asking a maid at the hotel to swing from the chandelier instead, and I asked him to just sit there and read a newspaper, which I think in the end was an even funnier, more unexpected picture.

Just wanted to pop in and say I have been noticing a lot of younger people say you are the one who has changed their minds on censorship and "problematic" content in fiction and I want to thank you for it.

It's becoming a huge issue in fandom spaces that people are morally judging others for fiction and it is scary to see, especially because a lot of the younger people are queer and are parroting the same rhetoric conservatives do about queer fiction. Having someone like you speaking out against it and standing by your convictions is an amazing help in stopping these communities from becoming depressing witch hunts for those who are deemed "freaks". And us freaks appreciate it a lot 💖

Hello Neil,i know you have 120k asks, so you will never see this, but genuinely, how do i start writing? I know it probably sounds silly to you, but I am 15 and already feel behind. I want to be a writer, I have loved reading ever since I read Coraline at 9 and have always wanted to do something creative with my life and to be an author just feels so fitting for me,I just don't know how to do it I guess. I keep trying but it always turns out bad,I don't even know where to beigin and how to pace the story or do anything really.I write short fanfics sometimes and when i go back to read them they are just objectively bad. I know what I do and dont like in stories,I just can't seem to accomplish what I want when I try to write it. And I do have so many ideas, but it never goes anywhere, and I can't put the words on the page. I know improving takes time but I just wish I had some guidance on how to improve(English is my third language so I probably made mistakes, I apologize )

You sound a lot l would have done at the age of 15, had I been articulate enough for anything like that. At the age of 15 or I knew was that I really wanted to be a writer and that I wanted to write and draw comics one day. I had some ideas that would turn out to be good ideas 15 years later or 25 years later but at that time they were just ideas and I didn't know how to make them into stories.

The most important thing you can do is to keep writing. The second most important thing you can do is to live and learn and experience the world and accumulate a store of things that you have to say and things that you need to write about.

Hi sweetheart. I really don’t read MCD, so this will be a short rec, but here you go:

Deux Fantômes by ohpleaselarry (E, 16K) So, let me start by saying I cried through ¾ of this. I promise it’s still a happy ending, but it’s heavy and very moving. Please read the tags as there are some triggering things, but it’s also so sweet and gentle and really well written. 

My husband (29/M) died and has been possessed by a demon and now he’s cooking eggs in my kitchen as if nothing happened, what do I do? by adoreloux (M, 4K) I’ve only recently found this author, but I love their fics. They’re definitely unique, just a bit quirky, and so well written. This one made me cry (I mean, Harry is dead. Sort of).

hoping the cold blue water washes me clean and spits me out again by phantasmagoria (M, 18K) Also known as “The Brain Cancer fic”, I haven’t read this, and I never will. But everyone I know who has said it’s beautiful and heartbreaking. It’s been deleted, but the link is for a dropbox download.

Stranger on the Shore by CellarDoor (T, 3K) Ok, let me start off by saying that this fic is SAD. Like, not just angsty sad, sad like not a happy ending. BUT, if you can handle that, this is just beautiful writing. Listen….I cry over everything, but I did read this. And I did love it. But, man….

things have gotten closer to the sun by starseas (M, 49K) Otherwise known as “the solar flare fic”. Let me tell you…I could only read this once. And it was written back when no one tagged anything but I can’t exactly say this has a happy ending. Kind of? It’s beautifully written and man did I cry. One of those fics that lingered a long time afterwards.

But I’m Weak by @afangirlfantasy​ (NR, 2K) This was gorgeous. And SO sad. And I would read 50K of this if I was a masochist. 2K is about all I can handle of this level of angst, but boy was it beautifully written.

Fire For a Heart by anchor, freetheankles / @anymerrylilthought (E, 44K) Another one I haven’t read, again because it has MCD, but I’m a fan of this author’s writing. The fic has been deleted, but the link is to a download.

The Grey’s anatomy/Chicago Fire AU no one asked for where Louis is the captain of the firefighting Squad 78, Harry is a surgeon, Zayn is Louis’ second in command and Liam is the rookie. Niall and Sam are Harry’s fellow residents and have their own affair going on.

Coeur d’Enfants by lavenderforluck (E, 127K) And yet one more I haven’t read, but it comes highly recommended to those of you who like to suffer. Read the tags. It’s got some heavy topics.

She called the paps while she was on a yacht in Italy literally on the day Robin died (iirc). Vogue Italia published the photos but the photos all were of her friend who they misidentified as Tess. A few hours later they were pulled. Tess was pulled from bearding duty pretty much the next day with the quote ‘they were just friends’.

If I remember right, they got rid of Tess because of something she did right after Robin passed. Can’t remember exactly what it was though, but she was very obnoxious and was loving the attention.

I honestly don’t remember. I try to block all past beards from my memory.
