All I know about Toners
One of the reader had expressed interest in knowing more about toners, how exactly to use them and how useful they really are. So, I decided to do a post where I put in everything I know about toners since the beginning of my blogging and then I go on to say whether you should use a toner or not?
Toners have long been under debate for their efficacy but now they have finally found place in the skin care routine as the hydrators. Earlier, it was just astringents and rose water but not toners are coming as exfoliants as well. Toners were actually the part of the 10 step Korean skin care routine which have slowly been accepted world wide.
What are different types of Toners?
Astringent toners were recommended for oily or acne prone skin to calm or soothe it and help heal the breakouts. Usually, the active ingredient would be witch hazel.
Rose water is still recommended for all skin types thanks to its soothing and cooling properties. This is more of a traditional toner which has been recommended in India for centuries now.
Alcohol based toners have been in the market for long as they are good at drying out the spots and pimples and improve skin tone. Though, regular and prolonged usage would result in dehydration of the skin due to the excess usage of alcohol. They have over the years lost their appeal to consumers. I have tried the toner from Clean and Clear which was amazing but beware that it has alcohol.
Face Mists are yet another category of toners (though now they are a different category altogether) popularized by the concept of hydrating the skin with mineral water. Evian, vichy, avene have all thermal waters which are rich in minerals and vitamins essential for skin. More expensive products in this category are water of hungary and the likes. They are called mists because their nozzle leaves a fine spray of product on face as opposed to the pumping action of the toners.
Floral Waters have been popularized based on the same concept of rose water, just that these are distillates of different flowers like calendula, jasmine, vetiver, lavender and even fruits like grapefruit.
Another category of toners popular these days are exfoliating toners or acid toners. They have alpha hydroxy acids or beta hydroxy acids as their active ingredient and help in exfoliating the skin. The current skin care routine trend has popularized the use of an exfoliating toner followed by a hydrating toner before commencing the rest of the skin care routine. The combination of these two toners have taken on the role of astringents and alcohol based toners with the promise of being gentle on the skin.
What toners and face mists have I used till date?
Rose Water – It is funny but I am not a fan of this. But, then, all the rose waters I have used till date are from inferior brands. Also, one of the brand I used would mix distilled water with rose damascena essential oil. I have to mention that this is not equivalent to a rose water. Any floral water is effective only if it is the concentrated distillate of the flower which carries the essence of the flower and its properties. Diluted essential oils, however expensive, are not the same.
Kama Vetiver Water – I loved this. It smells soothing and is very Earthy. It would calm down the skin and keep it hydrated.
Kama Lavender Water – This is something I am using currently and I have to say I am not a fan of lavender. I do not find it soothing or even sleep inducing. But, I like how hydrating it is.
Vichy Thermal Water – I think I have used other face mists as well and the only thing I liked was the spray action. The fine mist which gets splashed on the face feels really nice and cool. But, that is about it and I do feel this is a waste of money.
However, I have to mention that I am not sure if any of the products above have really helped with my skin quality. I like to mist my face before massaging in the facial oil and it does stay supple and hydrated and the water helps in absorption of the oil as well. So, I use the toner. But, if you ask me how much it has helped my skin, I would not be able to say that it has removed my spots or anything. Yes, it probably does help in hydration but if my serum is not enough, it is not enough. Extra toner or mist is not going to help there.
Should You Use a Toner?
When I am following my skin care routine, I spray my face generously with toner and follow up with a facial oil. If I am going to put on a serum, I prefer to use toner to make my skin damp and ready for absorption. But, does it really help? I can not say for sure.
A thumb rule in skin care is that damp skin is better at absorbing products so if you would like to use a toner instead of plain water, you may use them. Will your skin not absorb the product without the aid of a toner? I honestly can not say and I would not even hazard saying a no.
The last say is yours so give it a try and see how it really works out for you.
Have I tried acid toning?
Very recently, I splurged on Pixi glow tonic though I would mention I have used it only twice since I got it in May. First it felt really sticky and I hated it. And, then, I am not using sunscreen everyday which discourages me to use an acid on my face. If you are going to give acid toning a try, make sure you are using a sunscreen diligently in the morning to prevent any harm to the skin due to excess sensitivity.
Till then, ciao.

The Beauty Woe That ‘Really Affects’ Zoe Kravitz’s Mood and Confidence
YSL Beauty brand ambassador Zoe Kravitz has around-the-clock access to top-notch makeup. But like us, even she goes into panic mode when a surprise breakout can’t be covered up by the finest of designer cosmetics. While celebrating her latest gig–face of the brand’s Black Opium fragrance–she delved into all things hair and skin, revealing not only her go-to YSL staple, but why she takes her regimen so seriously, too.
MORE: 23 Buzzy Fragrance-Free or Unscented Products for Sensitive Skin
“Everything else is important, but the most important thing is for skin to look dewy and even,” she told Refinery29 after saying Touche Éclat is the one product she never leaves home without. It’s long been considered a cult favorite, due to its user-friendly pen applicator and ability to be used in a multitude of ways; from highlighting cheekbones to decreasing the appearance of blemishes and providing overall glow to the face.
“I like that it’s really sheer. It’s more about balancing things out and brightening things up, as opposed to actually covering. If you slept at someone’s house and woke up in the morning, that’s [the product] you’d want.”
Source: Instagram
At the same time, she still swears by a strict skin care routine, which started from a young age, thanks to her stunning mother Lisa Bonet. “My mother definitely instilled that in me quite early, like [she] wouldn’t let me go to sleep without washing my face,” she said. And though she keeps relatively smart skin habits, the occasional pimple still gets the best of her.
“I get bummed when my skin breaks out. It really affects my mood and my confidence. Obviously it happens to everyone and it’s fine, but I really try to keep it under control. If I have a pimple and I know I have a shoot coming, I start to panic.”
We’re sure Kravitz keeps a spot treatment handy, but more than anything, we’re ecstatic to know her acne struggles aren’t too far off from ours.

Chrissy Teigen Chopped Her Hair into the Shortest, Blunt Bob
While John Legend was becoming an EGOT winner on Sunday night, Chrissy Teigen was celebrating her own victory: her new haircut. Following in the footsteps of stars, such as Gabrielle Union and Irina Shayk, the 32-year-old model ditched her signature, mermaid-length hair in favor of a short, blunt bob, and needless to say, she looks fab.
The Lip Sync Battle cohost debuted her shorter ‘do on the red carpet at the 70th Primetime Creative Arts Emmys on Sunday where her husband, Legend, took home an Emmy for his producing work on NBC’s live production of Jesus Christ Superstar, making him an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony winner and the first black man to achieve the feat.
With her husband on her arm, Teigen walked the red carpet in a sleek black dress with her chin-length hair styled with wet waves and tucked behind her ears. Compared to the bust-length hair that Teigen sported in June, Teigen’s new ‘do is several inches shorter and falls right below her chin.

What Is Keto Cycling, and Is It Effective?
Chances are at least a few of your friends and family members are on the keto diet or have tried it. If you’re anything like me, the mere thought of bidding adieu to pasta and bread probably sends chills down your spine. But if you’re looking for a balance between getting the benefits of the keto diet without foregoing your carb fix altogether, keto cycling may be right up your alley.
But first things first: What is keto cycling? Although it’s essentially a form of the keto diet, it hasn’t gotten nearly as much attention.
MORE: 16 Delicious Keto Dessert Recipes You Need in Your Life
“Keto cycling differs from the classical ketogenic diet because it allows more customization,” registered dietitian Robert Santos-Prowse explains. “With a strict ketogenic diet, you need to restrict your carbs to minuscule amounts all the time. “With a cyclical approach, you are allowing yourself the freedom to enjoy some carbohydrates on a regular basis but still get the benefits of the ketogenic diet.”
Although doctors and nutritionists don’t have an agreed-upon protocol for keto cycling, Alex Jatzke, lead dietitian at Simplex Health, recommends five to six days of a strict ketogenic diet followed by one or two days of higher carbohydrate intake.
“While the ketogenic diet requires a more long-term low-carbohydrate and high-fat diet, keto cycling allows for more flexibility with carbohydrate intake while still resulting in the long-term health benefits of a ketogenic diet,” Jatzke explains.
MORE: Exactly What It’s Like to Commit to the Keto Diet for 10 Days
If you’ve tried the keto diet and found it too difficult to maintain (or you have a hunch that it will simply be too restrictive), Jatzke says keto cycling may be beneficial in these situations. Additionally, she notes that “cycling in and out of carb restriction” could be particularly beneficial for balancing hormone levels in women.
“The cyclical ketogenic diet is very effective because of the ketogenic diet itself. The main benefit of a cyclical approach is that it improves the sustainability of the diet,” Santos-Prowse says. Although the keto diet is effective for weight loss, blood glucose control and blood pressure management, it’s incredibly restrictive, he adds.
“You have to restrict your carbohydrate intake to the equivalent of less than one apple a day. That’s hard to stick with long-term,” Santos-Prowse explains. “A cyclical approach allows you to add in a bit more carbs on a regular schedule.”
MORE: 25 Incredible Keto Recipes Anyone Will Love
Of course, nutrition still matters on those higher carb days. Jatzke suggests getting your carbs from starchy vegetables, fruits and whole grains on those days.
“If you have a tendency towards binging behaviors, keto cycling should be avoided,” she adds—and if you have a history of eating disorders, Jatzke says a strict ketogenic diet is generally not recommended. In fact, she recommends that people with any type of preexisting medical condition consult with their doctors before starting keto cycling or the keto diet.
But not all doctors and nutritionists are on board with the keto diet. “I recommend keto cycling over the keto diet if clients are set on some sort of fad diet,” Sam Olmsted, consultant for All Inclusive Health, explains. “However, it’s much more beneficial to simply have a balanced meal. Stick to whole grains, protein and vegetables while avoiding processed foods.”
