At the age of 18 I got my own room and I was free to decorate it in whichever way I wanted. It's been 4 years and I haven't changed a single thing about my room. It looks the same way it did when I was 18. Decorating my room, making it more homey and more "me" would mean coming to terms with the fact that I'm going to stay here. I don't wish to stay here. I dream of living elsewhere and by decorating my room (in my head) I'm abolishing my last hope of leaving this place. In my mind's eye it equals to saying "I am going to stay here for a long time, might as well make myself feel comfortable around here".

I'm not ready for that level of conformism.

And now somehow I completely understand how Gregor Samsa felt when his mother and sister were trying to move things out of his room to make him feel more comfortable.
