despite knowing what seemed like everyone who lived in derry, the town always felt quiet to ted -- not peaceful, by any means, just crouched, waiting. the impressions he usually gets are passive, scenes of horror or dismay from years ago, ghosts of people and places and pain filtering through his mind like flipping through channels on a tv.
tv’s don’t usually talk back, though.
ted stops in place on the sidewalk, head canted over his shoulder though he knows nobody behind him called out. he squints, grip tightening on the dusty baseball in his hand. his mind’s always worked better with pictures than with words, so he tries to send one out now -- the weather-worn sign outside of the tracker bros. make-shift baseball field loudly proclaiming ‘HELLO AND WELCOME’. he wonders, idly, if it’d be easier to send the message if he knew who ( or what? ) he was talking to.
                    @baseballtees     /  it  verse.

derry  wasn’t  a  place  for  weird  kids.  but  how  come  everyone  in  town  was  a  little  odd?  tj  rode  his  bike  home  to  his  sisters,  after  a  long  day  putting  up  with  trash  and  pre-teens  at  the  arcade.  just  a  few  hundred  dollars,  and  he’d  bail,  escape  from  this  cell  he  was  forced  to  call  home.
an  unexpected  guest  comes  to  his  head  when  staring  at  the  ceiling  on  his  bedroom,  simple  minds  banging  loudly  with  closed  doors  and  windows.  who’s  this?  he  asks  with  a  thought.  always  bad  with  small  talk.

(     *     ‘SALEM’S LOT PROMPTS   !
——     stephen king.
❛  alone. yes, that’s the key word, the most awful word in the english tongue.  ❜
❛  the basis of all human fears. a closed door, slightly ajar.  ❜
❛  crying was like pissing everything out on the ground.  ❜
❛  there are no words for childhood’s dark turns and exhalations.  ❜
❛  a child who counts the cost is a child no longer.  ❜
❛  if a fear cannot be articulated, it cannot be conquered.  ❜
❛  the only thing more natural than death was sex.  ❜
❛  at three in the morning the blood runs slow and thick, and slumber is heavy.  ❜
❛  if a man dethrones god in his heart, satan must ascend to his position.  ❜
❛  the bestiality of the night rises on tenebrous wings. the vampire’s time has come.  ❜
❛  it would have been better if there had been pain. pain was at least real.  ❜
❛  there is every possibility that some of us, or all of us, may live and triumph.  ❜
❛  the act of moving forward at all became heroism.  ❜
❛  in the midst of life, we are in death.  ❜
❛  horror is destroyed by boredom. love is a dream.  ❜
❛  the town cares for devil’s work no more than it cares for god’s or man’s.  ❜
❛  it knew darkness. and darkness was enough.  ❜
❛  we’d all be scared if we knew what was swept under the carpet of each other’s minds.  ❜
❛  there is no life here but the slow death of days.  ❜
❛  it is almost as though the town knows the evil was coming and the shape it would take.  ❜
❛  it seems the more you have the more aggressive you become.  ❜
❛  without faith, the cross is only wood, the bread baked wheat, the wine sour grapes.  ❜
❛  houses absorb the emotions that are spent in them.  ❜
❛  the people elected me. but who elected the people?  ❜

#a lot like how johnny smith's power works in the dead zone tbh #and i think these impressions ted gets could really fuck him up !!!! #like re-seeing the traumatic event happening and literally becoming sick to this stomach over it #being haunted by ghosts that no one else has seen for years #dreaming about things he's never seen happen but knows exactly how they played out #i can see this being especially vivid for the stand pipe where the kids drowned #and the sight of the black spot #anyway he's gonna be a traumatized lil 13 year old that's that on that
i was literally about to get in bed but wanted to post this so bad that i came back out and turned my computer on again, but ted’s shining has so much to do with feelings !! obviously emotions that he picks up from other people are a big part of it, but it’s also about the feelings that are left behind when something intense or traumatic happens, so as you can imagine derry is chockfull of places that are soaked with these echoes of horror that nobody can see / feel unless you’ve got a sort of second sight, and i think as he gets a little bit older and more aware of the kind of shit that’s gone down in derry, those impressions he gets from the town itself become a lot stronger and more overwhelming for him

“OH, YOU WANT TO WAIT?” you huff, only letting out a small huff of air, sort of like the small piece of the shine that floated out of the boy on the paper you slam between your half-empty plates. “his name was will. he was sixteen, a little old, but he was really fucking bright. used his shine to help people. he made it two hours – a new fucking RECORD.” you slam down the next photograph, a blurry picture of a redheaded girl beaming in her dad’s arms, and hope he can’t notice the way your hands shake. “that was four months ago. we think she’s next –,” you pause, voice catching in your throat, as you picture will screaming, trying impossibly to be BRAVE, to not give them the fear they craved despite the tears streaming down his face, as they rearranged his guts in exchange for his soul, and as terrible as it is, you know this girl’s will be even worse. “but sure. we’ll wait. but you’re explaining to the dad what happened to his baby girl.”
Tumblr media
“gee, y’ever think about going into public speaking, billie?” ted scrubs his hand over his face. he doesn’t have to imagine what it was like for that kid will. he’s gotten the impressions from bradley trevor’s glove, felt the horrors those kids went through. abra and billie are doing their best to keep more kids from falling prey. it’s just as much ted’s responsibility to do the same. he clenches his hand into a fist, squeezes hard, then relaxes. it’s what dan would want him to do. “we know where the kid is? where the knot is?”

“I started after him…and the clown looked back. I saw Its eyes, and all at once I understood who It was.“ “Who was it, Don?” Harold Gardner asked softly. “It was Derry,” Don Hagarty said. “It was this town.”
