inspired by @trashworldblog’s post
i think people put art on this moral high ground that has to be above the forces of capitalism or some of other hyperbole and that’s just not?? true??
people forget watcher is a business, it’s the livelihood of PEOPLE, this is something they’re gonna explore, see if it works out, and adjust
should they try to do regional pricing for international fans? absolutely
but too many people seem to be up in arms about the streaming platform in a way that is simply just not healthy and is reflective of the way a lot of people seem to consume media now
i understand being sad but swearing off everything watcher because you’ve created this strange idolization of the company is just. not good for you.

i can’t tell if people are acting dumb on purpose or if they’re being serious… you genuinely think the boys are now included in “eat the rich” just because of this??????

Quick reminder that you’re allowed to feel conflicted over the Watcher decision! Like you can be both upset that you need to pay money for content that was previously free but also happy that they’re going to make some more money off of their work. You can get a subscription with a friend but also be mad at why they made the decision when they already have a Patreon. Like you can be mad or happy about it, do you see what I’m saying

Harrison Ford hating playing Han Solo made him better at playing Han Solo because Han Solo did not want to be there doing those things either.

you guys do know that watcher is also part of this economy right? right??? they have crew and expenses and apparently they cannot afford them by relying on the incredibly unreliable whims of advertising and youtube. watchertv is the natural progression from their leave from buzzfeed and the founding of watcher and as someone who has also been around since the buzzfeed days i’m not surprised.

"Oh so they're capitalists now" motherfucker it's all capitalism. Youtube having 50 ads a video with an in-video sponsor read that takes a quarter of the video is capitalism. Be real

The fact that the majority of the fans would rather support Taylor swift who’s a terrible person and buy many varieties of one mediocre album and not the watcher team who’s just trying to make their business grow like huh?? 😭
Im glad someone got the point i was trying to make lol. The "economic climate" is a wack argument. You don't believe their content is worth the money, fine. But don't act like the world isn't rushing to buy the exact outfits Sabrina carpenter wore during jingle ball and place eBay bids of old Taylor swift merch. Its fucked that a small company like Watcher has no sway in the economic crisis argument, when they are needing to enforce a paywall because of said shitty economic climate.

incredibly funny of people to be peeved abt watcher leaving YouTube that takes 30% of profits on membership payments off the bat & moving to their own streaming service so they can host their video content at a smaller cost on a different platform & pay the new hires & additional show theyre putting on with presumably less 3rd party ads & potentially without the need for the patreon which also scrapes anywhere between 5-12% off patron support without the additional charge for payment processing.
Selling out isn't starting a new streaming service, it's where they do paid promotions in the middle of their shows & have to edit their content to appeal to keeping old and getting new sponsors, which funny enough...
Just say this isn't a financial decision you or you and a password sharing buddy can make & move on, there's no shame in that

Watcher fans sure are entitled and a little insane, ngl. "No one is going to sign up for your service! We're all poor! You've made the worst decision, and you'll be back in no time!" Saying this directly to the creators really reminds you of how low the respect for people you don't personally know has gone. I miss the forth wall between creator and audience.
I get and fully understand not having the money to support them, but... Watcher does have fans with money. A lot of them actually. They have merch sales. Their live tour sells out most venues. They have thousands of supporters on Patreon, where the cheapest tier is $5. They're able to gauge the rough finances of their staunchest supporters; that's how they landed on the subscription price. Yes, this move will reduce their viewership in sheer numbers, but to say all of their fans are broke and none will follow/support is factually incorrect.
It may not be a decision everyone agrees with, but severing the limitations of advertisers and youtube in favor of artistic freedom is a good thing. Yes, even if it comes with a loss of revenue. They understand that risk.
Also, I'm begging people to stop treating this like "another Netflix" or something and instead look at it as, "I am supporting a creator I like, similar to Patreon." They literally said in the video that they don't care if you share accounts. Get five friends, and you'll pay $1/mo.
I hate feeling compelled to rant in favor of their decision because I have my own reservations about whether it's the best move. However, I know it's not a choice they made lightly, and I like to think they understand that they'll need to branch out like crazy to entice subscribers.
