In all these years, I've never learned how to tag someone, so I have to come to you directly, to show you the tears on my cheeks because he's sitting so quietly, curled up, watching a world he'll never know through a tiny crack in the wall.

You know, it's a little odd. All of the pieces in this series are about isolation and escape--Icarus, Orpheus and Eurydice, Prometheus, and certainly the Minotaur. But A Crack in the Labyrinth came first, and more than any of the rest, it's about resignation. About having fought and scrabbled and clawed desperately and still...not having made it. Still being trapped inside, alone.

And when I made it, I hadn't really intended to say anything more than that one piece, but I just couldn't leave it there. I had to give him the whole story--an innocent beginning, same as anyone. I couldn't leave the ending as it was written; I'd initially just intended to have the conclusion the myth gives him, slain by Theseus, but...if I'm going to say, "I'm the minotaur, monstrous and alone and told by the world that that is right and deserving," then I am also saying "you, who feels deeply for this, for whom this resonates, you are also the minotaur and we are monsters who deserve the ending that is written for us." And I...just can't bear to. There has to be hope.

So there is, very literally, light at the end of the labyrinth, one way or another.

Anyways, I used this song for that photoset on the clock app, but I think you would also enjoy it. Cow Boy, take us away.

I love when new ppl at work first find out I'm a metalhead and concert junkie, because by necessity my like "work-sona" or whatever u wanna call it is the most bubbly optimistic ray of sunshine who's "here to help with anything you need just shout! ^w^" and prattles on and on about Hozier etc [I DO love him don't get me wrong but I have "work safe" artists I know ppl will actually TALK to me about xD] and like, I've really got that customer service voice / face down to an art, esp when I'm behind on my hair upkeep and it fades from blue to blonde during the period said new employee joins on. Cannot emphasize enough the joy I take the first time they hear me go like "Yeah I'm logging off early Friday because I have to get downtown for a warehouse show. REALLY hoping I don't rip the heel off my shoe in the pit again I'm still mourning the loss of those boots from last time" And then I look up and their face is just

i was introduced to imminence, and more specifically the album ‘heaven in hiding’, in the throes of my grad degree. among other themes, my sister thought that an album that had its roots in fighting through literal and metaphorical Dark Winter Nights would resonate deeply w me, and they were right.

in the dead of dark alaskan winters, when the sun is only up for 4 hours of a day, and most of that time is spent cooped up in a classroom, the only light i would Truly Get was from the tungsten lamp posts on campus. the warm orange glow against the midnight black sky, catching snowflakes and making them look like fireflies, was the inspiration for the Glowing White Rose.

the rose itself is modeled after the ones my sister’s neighbor grows, and that they send me to remind me that the sun will always come Back.

the hands are My hands, traced from a reference photo, indicative of my dedication to shelter and protect my inner light.

it took me a year plus to finish this piece, and i’m happy to report it was finished just in time to take with me to see the band that inspired it next week <3
