firstly, thank you so much for 100 followers! you are all sweethearts <3
so, 2018 is pretty much over. this was my first year as a university student and i learned a lot of things, not only academically but about how to deal with being a full-time college student. so, these are my tips you, precious souls that are about to start college too (or any college student, actually). these are drawn from my experience, but i really think they could help!
find a coffee shop that you like. find out if they have students discounts. if they have it, hold them close to your heart and never let go. my favorite coffee shop is in the mall next to my campus and they have 10% off for students of the universities nearby. i think at this point all the baristas know my name, because i go there almost every day. trust me, you will need the ally.
actually, students discounts in general are your best friend. in my country, every student has 50% off in cultural activities such as cinemas, concerts, museums, theaters, basically everything that requires a ticket. there are places where you can get discounts from all sorts of stores. in my university, we have access to language classes for a really cheap price. look them up, research, and that will save you a lot of money in the long term.
on the same note, find out what you have access to. dedicate some time to walk around your campus and the other campi your university may have in the city. talk to other students about programs, events, everything from big things, like internships and scholarships, to small ones. my university, for example, provides free transportation from one campi to another, since it has multiple campi all around the city, and that has saved me a lot of bus tickets. those hacks are usually things you can only learn from experience, so get yourself out there asap.
get to know the surroundings of your campus, especially if you’re new to the city. knowing what is nearby, what kind of stores and restaurantes you have within walking distance, which public transportation stops or stations are close, if there are any cute coffee shops, museums and such. you’re going to spend a lot of time in that area, so get to know it.
use! google drive! for! everything! google products like google drive, google photos, google docs/sheets/slides are a MUST-HAVE. they’re completely free and they will for sure make your life 100x easier, seriously. i used google docs for LITERALLY every single group project i had this year.
LEARN HOW TO USE MENDELEY!!!!!!!!!!!! it is a sources and references manager that will make dealing with research papers and papers in general actually your whole life SO. MUCH. EASIER. i used it to write a huge semester-long scientific article last semester and it saved my life. here is a video on how to use it, and i might do a post later on how i use it, but download it and get acquainted to it because it’s MAGICAL and people don’t talk enough about it.
go to every possible class in the beginning of the semester so you can skip classes in the end of it without having to worry about attendance. in the end of the semester, you will be so burnt out and stressed that you will BEG yourself a day off, but if you have skipped classes back in the beginning of the semester you won’t be able to skip them now because of attendance, and you’ll want to punch yourself in the face. so please. resist the temptations and don’t skip classes in the beginning of the semester unless you really have to.
that’s a cliché one but try and be one of those people that join things. clubs, projects, events, meetings, there’s something out there for everyone. find something that you like and join. not only you’ll probably get credits for it, it’ll be an opportunity to get to know other people and to understand the dynamics of the academic world. and, in the end, it usually ends up being a lot of fun! and, if fun for itself is not enough motivation, remember i got two (2) paid internships in my first year because of the extra activities i had on my resume. just remember to make to be doing something that you like and that makes you feel comfortable and enjoy the ride!
and lastly, but most importantly:
don’t! feel! pressured! to! do! anything!
you don’t need to prove yourself. no one is keeping scores, even though it sometimes feels a lot like it. take your time. if something is making you uncomfortable, leave. you don’t have to do something just because everyone else is doing it. you can always try again in the next semester. repeat with me here:
college is NOT a race.
college is NOT a race.
college is NOT a race.

It’s a perfectly rainy, gloomy day in california and the absolute perfect day to stay inside with a cozy cup of tea, get some studying done, and listen to some music. As much as I love going out with my friends, I have to say that I love being such a homebody. I’m hoping there are more fall days like this to come!

shitty advice of a college student. (part two)
(read part one here.)
sit where you’ll pay attention. sometimes this doesn’t necessarily mean sitting in the very front; personally, I like to sit more in the middle. it gives me a good view of my professor and at the same time makes me feel a lot less self-conscious.
not sure about shit? talk to your professor. email your professor. clarify things and show that you’re a student who cares about more than just showing up.
get to class on time!!!
when you email professors always say THANK YOU for their time and help! remember that they’re not required to put in extra time to help you; but the good ones just do. make these people love you!!! a good relationship could turn your B+ into an A- at the end of the semester.
reaching out to both your classmates and your professor when you’re absent is your responsibility.
please eat. and drink water. everyday. I mean it.
being a good student means that you will have shitty days. a lot of them. sometimes things go wrong, or you have more work than you can handle, or you end up getting a C on a quiz you thought you studied your ass off for. that’s okay. life happens. shit happens. let yourself feel shitty sometimes.
once again: let yourself feel shitty sometimes.
unless you want to die, don’t cram for your exams!! plan ahead. study a little bit every day so that the information is retained and you don’t have to study as much the night before. the process works. planning ahead will actually make you work less. trust me.
know that mistakes happen and life goes on. sometimes there’s just nothing you can do to change something. acknowledge that you’ve done everything you could, it was worth trying, and move on. mistakes happen so we can learn from them.
be realistic with your daily to-do list. if you spent all night studying your ass off for that mid-term and you know that you won’t have the mental energy to get a whole list of things done the next day, then they can wait! pace yourself and get done as much as you are capable of doing in one sitting.
you don’t have to look gorg going to class but if putting together daily looks and getting ur face beat gives you that motivation to go to school than you go girl!!!!
it does not matter if another student your age seems like they have it all together; because chances are, they don’t. no one does. we are all struggling to get shit done. we all have our own journeys. it is not a competition. no path is more valuable than another.
stress doesn’t mean you’re entitled to being an asshole. the people in your life probably know that you have a lot on your plate. they’re trying to live their lives as hard as you are. don’t be a dick about it.

1. Have a Positive Mental Attitude- Prime yourself at being always comfortable and confident that u can do a lot better at studying. Remember that you are studying things that will prove to be valuable in real life.  2. Prepare your Work Space- Look for a place in your home or bedroom where u think u can study and maintain concentration in your work. Have materials stocked up and in place before your study. This way, u can finish your work without any interruptions.  3. Avoid Cramming- study an hour a day even when there’s no homework. Scan your notebooks and do a little advanced reading of your textbooks. You can also research through the internet to learn more about the topics u are covering in school.  I suggest google scholar, it’s like google but for students, it has the citations, and filters results so that only helpful outcomes appear. 4. Do projects with more enthusiasm and creativity- Don’t be afraid to think of new ideas or ways to present your homework or projects. Teachers always give additional points to students who show great effort in their works. SO, don’t be afraid to do something original, do something that hasn’t been done before. 5. Raise Your Hand- Be active and establish a friendly attitude towards your teachers. Offer to help them out in checking some work, filing papers or just carrying their things. Little good things add up in the end for that extra effort grade, and they’ll always remember you as a very helpful student.  6. Enjoy Reading the Latest News- Find connections or associations with your life as a student, as a child, as a friend, or as a citizen. Certain reports would always ask for u to react so better be ahead with current events which you may be affected with.  7. Listen to Your Teacher, take a few notes- In my experience, the more i copy and take down notes, the more i get lost in the lecture. It is best to listen first and understand before u jot down any important keywords. Yes, use keywords, simple doodles and arrows to make associations. These will help u remember all concepts mentally.  8. Keep Notes on Index Cards- I use personally use the smaller oxford ones, they are more portable honestly pretty aesthetic..   9. Watch TV Wisely- Yep you heard it, TV, when watching TV I sometimes pick up points which may seem relevant in my life. They sometimes even have something to do with what’s happening in class at the moment so, always initiate conversation about the latest shows and issues you have watched. Don’t be afraid to argue and defend your opinions.

College is known as a time of having little money & living off Ramen, so here’s a few tips to help save & even earn some money while in college!
Shopping Tips:
Shop in sales: Shop clever, buy your winter clothes when they’re on sale in summer & vice versa. You can really save a lot of money on good quality clothes such as shoes & fleeces buy buying them when they’re discounted.
Look around: compare online prices & the price in other stores and retailers. Also remember to check delivery!! It can make a real difference to the price!
Discount Codes: a college student’s best friend. Sites like Unidays & Student Beans always have lots of codes for discounts when shopping online and don’t forget to present your card at the till when you’re shopping in store! Also many bloggers often share discount codes so make sure to look out for them too!
Unsubscribe from emailing lists: emails offering products that you don’t need or from stores are 1) clogging up your inbox & 2) can be tempting to make impulse purchases.
Cut down on take-out: and food you buy in college. Try bringing your own meals & snacks you’ve made at home in. You’ll be surprised how much you’ll save in a week!
Be wise about when you shop: look out in advance about when there’s going to be a sale on & know about upcoming ones, especially if looking for something specific.
Buy high quality: on items that you use often such as fleeces, shoes & coats. Try and buy these when they’re on sale, usually spring and summer months! Buying a higher quality will stop you having to repurchase sooner as they’ll last longer.
Be careful shopping with others: be considerate about what you want & what you need. Friends can sometimes be a bad influence when it comes to buying wants.
Pay with cash if possible: people tend to spend less if they can actually see what they’re spending & see it disappear.
Good Saving Habits:
At the end of each week: clear out your purse, collect spare change in a jar, watch it add up!
Have a target: set a target for an amount you want to save at the start of each week. At the end of the week you can use it to treat yourself, or save it up and after a few months you could have enough for a trip!
Ask yourself if you need it: especially for things like textbooks. See if there’s other options such as borrowing from the library or buying a cheaper old/used edition.
Make use of free things: such as the library! You can borrow books for free & it’s a warm, quiet place to study (which will save money on your home electricity bill!). Also see if any college clubs have free classes such as karate, or dance which you can do, instead of forking out for a gym membership! Also societies are always hosting free events such as movie nights!
Try envelople budgeting: it can be a handy way to see how much you want to spend on different things!
Mend: old things or DIY a new one! Pinterest is great for finding plenty of different DIY’s & hacks.
Sign up for rewards programmes: if you shop at a specific store a lot, see if they offer a loyalty programme. Some banks even offer rewards for shopping at specific stores. So make sure you’re all signed up to make the best of your purchases!
Share subscriptions: Ask if anyone wants to share a subscription service such as Netflix with you, it’ll be cheaper & you’ll both benefit! Also remember Spotify & Apple Music both offer 50% off student discount!!
Earning Money:
Online Jobs: such as translator, writer, or typist. These jobs offer a lot of flexibility which can help if you’ve a busy schedule! This blog post has lots of information on online jobs.
Tutoring: there’s always people needing a little extra help in a subject, and if it’s one you’re specialising in, why not choose to tutor! There are online sites depending on your local area which can list you as a tutor in specific subjects.
Weekend Jobs: If you’re busy from 9-5 in college it can be hard to find a job during the weekdays. Plenty of companies are looking for people to work weekends, when their weekday staff is off.
Working on Campus: can be a great option as they know you have a busy schedule and also when exams are coming up. Pop in to your Student’s Union and see if they know of any available jobs!
Online Surveys: you won’t get rich quick from doing these & in my opinion some can be really time consuming. Many offer gift cards instead of money but income is income! Look online for companies that offer online surveys were you live.
Sell: old stuff hidden in the attic or clothes you never wear! Sites like eBay and Depop always have people looking out for something specific which you could have. Make sure you’re honest about your products condition & work out the shipping beforehand so you can get a sale!

Study organization- notebooks
I love stationery of all kinds, especially notebooks. And when you’re planning on studying, of course you need notebooks for taking notes and practicing! In this post, I’ll talk a little about my notebooks.
What kind(s) of notebook(s) do you use?
My personal preference is for spiral notebooks. I used to use notebooks that just opened like normal books, but they never liked to stay flat and they took up too much space on my desk. It’s funny because I used to hate spirals back when I was younger and way into drawing because the pages were more free to move against each other which led to more smudging, but I love spirals so much for note taking. They lay flat with no problem, which is the biggest thing for me. The spiral does get in the way of my hand sometimes, but it’s a minor annoyance.
I also consider the quality of the paper when buying my notebooks. It doesn’t have to be super high quality, but I just can’t deal with paper the quality of standard US looseleaf. It’s too thin and, more importantly, the surface is too rough. Paper with too rough a surface has led to the early death of too many of my pens—if you use fine-tip pens, size 0.5 or lower, and find they stop writing before the ink runs out—little bits from poor-quality paper probably got into the tip and ruined it. The paper I like the most feels a little bit weighty and nice and smooth!
Hardcover or softcover is also a choice to make! I use both, types:
Left to right- hardcover lined notebook, softcover lined notebook, softcover 원고지 squared paper notebook
Tumblr media
How many notebooks do you use?
I have three main types of notebooks! I’ll go over each type:
Grammar notebooks
Tumblr media
My grammar notebooks are all hardcover. I use them to collect grammar explanations and other important notes. I write them as cleanly as possible and even use my many colorful highlighters to make them look a little nicer. If I need to know about a grammar point that I have already learned, I open my grammar notebook for the right language and find it. This way, I don’t have to remember which textbook or source I saw a certain grammar point or explanation in—if it’s important, I write it down in my grammar notebook! So, my grammar notebooks are mashups of multiple texts and sources. These are for reference only; I don’t do any practice or extra writing in them. Nothing but the facts!
Practice notebooks
Tumblr media
My practice notebook is where I write down definitions of new words I learned, practice sentences for my vocab flashcard words, breakdowns of articles I’ve studied on my Chinese reader apps… I guess calling it a “practice notebook” makes its purpose pretty self-explanatory. It’s nothing special; I write quickly and messily in it, and when it gets full, I can just throw it in the recycling bin and start a fresh one. My practice notebook is a softcover spiral.
Chinese article notebook
Tumblr media
Korean squared paper—or I guess any squared paper—is wonderful for writing Chinese characters. Once I’ve encountered an article in a Chinese reader app and broken it down in my practice notebook, I rewrite it cleanly in my article notebook so I can easily find and read it again later.
I don’t always have all of my notebook types with me. If I plan on studying grammar, I will bring the correct grammar notebook along, and if I plan on studying Chinese articles, I might have my article notebook with me, but not always. However, my practice notebook is always in my bag!
How do you organize your notes and all? For those of you who might be struggling to get your notes together, I hope this helped!
Happy studying~

Conversation
Hogwarts House Study Moods
The Gryffindor: group quizzes and jeopardy and flashcards, interacts with material whenever possible so they make models for chem and draw out maps for history and act out Shakespeare, studies in some friend's room a bit too loud to actually be focusing, highlights bc it's the quickest, pomodoros involve longer time divisions, always in OH listening to others' questions, forgets to eat and then they all order pizza followed by a Taco Bell run in the wee hours of the morn when they're hungry again
The Hufflepuff: learns by teaching others, has to study in advance bc they know others are going to ask for help during exam weeks, secretly procrastinates by planning for everything in their bujos, washi tape tabs, fruity non-caf teas and herbal teas to relax or sleep or to settle nerves, has gel pens in every possible color, draws the neatest diagrams, can't prioritize so studies everything, uses that essential oil trick to remember things better by smell association, focuses best with dubstep
The Ravenclaw: notes, notes, and notes, mind maps to connect ideas no matter how unrelated they seem, solo studying in their rooms, green tea, classical music in the background, gets led off track focusing on details that have never been mentioned in class, will die for graph paper, accidentally pulls all-nighters bc they're so obsessed with understanding every single thing inside and out, color codes with basic colors nothing fancy, eats a bunch of toast and cereal bc they don't want to waste time
The Slytherin: practices old tests and gets extra material from others who have taken the class, motivated by watching others study so they're always at the library during finals or at dark and quiet cafes, the night owl-iest of the bunch, iced cold brews no matter the weather, makes comprehensive study guides that cover all testable points, does nothing all term but kicks into high gear a week and a half before any exam, owns a billion black pens and has an opinion about each of them, listens to indie alt

(s)EVEN MORE Study Moods
Soooo I have received requests for another one of these!
(first) (second)
So you SWEAR you need to study for finals week, but you just can’t. Maybe try these? Pick your favorite, or do one each day of finals week!
The Sleeping Beauty: Lavender tea, Disney songs, doing math problems on your futon.
Beware! This mood, comfy as it is, might result in unintended naps - indulge wisely.
The Work-Hard Play-Hard: Mocktails, Ke$ha, playing go-fish to learn vocab terms in a lounge.
Hey, studying can be fun! Round up friends taking French or Bio with you, make some playing cards (”Do you have ‘the method through which animals make ATP?” “Nope, don’t have cellular respiration, go fish!” or “Est-ce que tu as ‘un poisson’?” “Yeah, I have a fish. Dangit.”) and have a study party.
The Holiday Spirit: Eggnog, carols, creating mnemonics somewhere with holiday decorations.
Hey, it’s Hanukkah right now, Christmas is soon, and it’s almost break. One of those things probably excites you at least a little, so get in the spirit!
The Summer Child: Mango smoothie, the Beach Boys, creating timeline somewhere warm.
On the other hand, some people just don’t like winter, and that’s okay. Pretend it isn’t!
The Music Major: Bubbler water, orchestral music, writing analysis papers in a basement.
Okay, this one is mostly just based on my own personal experiences. However, it is pretty good at preventing distractions!
The Technomancer: Mountain Dew or Dr. Pepper, dubstep, making presentations in a computer lab.
Hey, if you’re going to spend a couple hours tethered to a computer to finish that powerpoint, you may as well get in the mood. You’re an 80′s hacker now. Congratulations.
The Yuppie: A venti caramel macchiato (Skim, Extra Shot, Extra-Hot, Extra-Whip, Sugar-Free), Vampire Weekend, making family trees at the coffee shop that your drink order just annoyed.
Okay, I do have an order like this, so this is all in good fun. This is really good for making you feel #Fancy, though, so if that’s what you need, go for it!
Don’t stress about doing exactly these - they’re suggestions! Mix and match at your leisure.
Go forth and study! Let finals never bring you down!
