riverdale book club // core four + cheryl headcanons

Requested by anon

The thought came to Betty and Veronica one night while they were facetiming to start a book club. With quarantine and social distancing they had been reading a lot more to fill the boredom. They started by comparing books they've read since the shut down and exchanging recs. 

They decided to invite the others after Archie posted 12 snaps in a row about how bored he was.

Cheryl saw Veronica's insta story and immediately texted her asking if she could join.

At first it was a hassle trying to get everyone together for a groupchat or FaceTime. Veronica sent in the group chat on the third get together "how hard can it be for you all to be on your phones at the same time, we are under a government mandated lockdown, honestly you have nothing better to be doing" and attendance was no longer a problem

They discussed reading the same book at once, but after much arguing and disagreeing on genres, they agreed they could all read whatever the heck they wanted to, instead they would each share about the book they were reading

This is probably the most pretentious book club in the North East and that is saying a lot

Jughead, Cheryl and Veronica try to outdo each other with each new book, it got so outlandish that Betty had to send weekly reminders that the book club was for fun, not a competition.

Cheryl and Veronica both enjoy poetry, but especially French poetry

Cheryl prefers classics, especially plays, Southern Gothic and Faulkner, and lgbt ya lit

Veronica reads classics, horror/thriller and nonfiction. One week the book she used for show and tell was a pretty pastel pink book on skin care.

Jughead simps for Capote and Kerouac, Fitzgerald and Hemmingway. His first book for show and tell with the club was crime and punishment, proving he's just not like other kids his age :/ He also really likes horror/noir/mystery novels

Betty can and will read anything that is put in front of her, ya lit and mystery novels, or novels that have a theme of mental illness or supernatural seems to be her favorite

Betty is guilty of buying books just because she thought the cover  was pretty, her to be read shelf is never ending

Archie is pretty much strictly ya and books based on/being made into a movie

Because of Jug's money situation, he and Veronica share books, but especially horror novels. 

Veronica is a serial annotater, Jughead found it endearing, until he found Veronica had written "yes queen" or "get his ass" in the margins of books with female villains. her copy of Medea read like a 2015 girl power pinterest board in the margins.

The books Jughead owns are all second hand, bought from thrift stores or garage sales most of the time

Jughead recommended Cheryl read Rose Madder by Stephen King and it became one of her favorite books

Archie is in the club mostly for the interaction, every now and then he attends the meeting without even picking his book up since the last meeting.

Betty started a bookstagram to show off the books she read, it gained 5 k followers in one week, she spends more time on flat lays than she does actually reading.

After Archie had cleared all ten books he owned, Betty let him borrow a few of her books. Two weeks later, Archie called an 'emergency meeting' after he finished the fault in our stars.

Betty had also given Archie 'Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children', at the meeting he began talking about how cool he thought it was that Emma could fly, Betty listened to him ramble for a full 10 minutes before she said, "Archie you didnt even read the book did you?" He quickly answered "no but I have seen the movie." Which prompted Cheryl to ask "can Archie even read?"

An argument heated discussion broke out in the middle of a video chat over the love triangle in the hunger games. Archie and Jughead agreed that it was a pointless gimmick, Betty and Cheryl argued that It was vital to the storyline, each boy depicting Katniss' life before and after the games. Veronica thought Katniss should have ended up with Johanna.

Post-break up kisses: Soft and slow. Hands on each other’s arms in a way that neither can tell if the other is pushing away or pulling closer. The kiss ends with their foreheads pressed together, neither wanting it to be true that this is happening.

ever since the breakup, you had shut yourself in and away from the world. everything had a way of reminding you of the girl who stepped on your heart.

while you were moping, your best friend was there for you. but cheryl had grown tired of you feeling sorry for yourself. she was throwing a party tonight and made many scary but empty threats to get you to attend.

so you showered and got dressed and arrived late to the party. and that’s how you ended up sitting in a corner, red cup of some mixed alcohol in hand, watching your newly single ex dance and mingle.

veronica wasn’t as bad as you were. although the breakup affected her too, she knew how to mask her feelings. that’s why she was at this party. drinking, dancing and flirting to keep the hurting inside. but you being at this party and watching her was making it harder for her to keep the mask on.

you didn’t mean to, at least not consciously, to corner her. you saw her heading into the kitchen and without thinking you got up and followed her. she was standing alone, back facing you. the alcohol in your system slowed your thoughts but they were still racing.

“hey,” you say getting her attention and spooking her a bit.

she turns to you, her eyes wide from the scare. “hey,” she says softly.

“sorry for scaring you,” you rub the back of your neck nervously.

“it’s okay. how, um, how are you?” she asks you. you can see the nerves and sincerity in her eyes.

you didn’t really know how to answer that. you don’t know how you are. “honestly, i don’t know. i want to be angry with you and hate you but i just can’t.”

veronica opens her mouth to apologize but you cut her off before she speaks. “you don’t have to apologize. i don’t blame you. i’ve never blamed you.”

you look away from her, trying not to cry. you focus on the music playing from the other room. you know the song playing in what used to be your song.

taking a deep breath you look back at veronica, “can i have this last dance?” you ask her holding your breath waiting for an answer 

she smiles at you softly and reaches forward, wrapping her arms around your neck. she shuffles closer and you place your hands around her waist.

this is where you are now. in the kitchen corner, slowly swaying and turning to your song, relishing in this last moment.

as the song comes to a finish, you don’t want to let go. veronica looks at you and you slowly bend your neck, leaning in to kiss her. her hands are caressing your face as her lips gently move against your.

the kiss feels like it lasts forever but it’s over far too quickly all at the same time. you lean your forehead against hers, both your eyes still closed. you pull away and open your eyes. she looks at you with love in her eyes but not the love she used have for you. she loves you, always will, but she’s not in love with you.

“i should go find cheryl,” you say not wanting to push your luck at drawing out this moment.

“yeah. and i should go find betty,” veronica says.

she leaves the kitchen first. and you just watch her leave. the reality of what happened sinking in. you stay a bit longer in the kitchen, pouring yourself another drink. cheryl finds you in that same spot minutes later.

she gives you this look as if she kinda knows what happened but doesn’t say anything. “tell me when your sober,” is all she says as she walks with you back to the party.

15. “Leave. Before we wake up regretting what we’ve done.”

betty cooper is a bad habit. she's a sane desire but you're insane enough to try. it's the same song and dance almost every night. she'll text you or you'll text her, it doesn't really matter. but a text is all it takes to get either of you to come running.

this time, she texted you first. you wasted no time in showing up at her bedroom window. she practically pulls you in. you stumble from the force and end up hovering above her, pinning her to the bed. it only takes one kiss and you're under her spell.

a couple hours later you're coming down from the high you both keep chasing. betty gets out of the bed and starts dressing. you know what's about to happen. it's the same thing every time.

you sit up against the headboard, waiting for the words you know are going to leave her lips. she starts tossing you your clothes, "leave. before we wake up regretting what we've done."

you scoff but start getting dressed. " stop acting like you actually regret this. if you did, why do we keep doing this?"

she turns away from you. either she doesn't know what to say or she's trying to find the words to say.

"i love jughead," she says turning to face you.

"are you trying to convince me or yourself?" you retort.

she looks at you like you shouldn't have said that, but you didn't care. you go back to putting your shirt on. you walk around the bed towards the window, towards her.

you go to grab your phone from the vanity behind her. "we've tried to stop this so many times but we keep chasing this high and we can't seem to stop," you tell her softly.

"just leave," she says a bit defeatedly.

you head towards the open window and start climbing out. you stop halfway and lock eyes with betty. "every time we try to fight this, we just end up wasted on each other. you say you love him but if you really did this, whatever this is, wouldn't keep happening. i'll see you around." you go back to climbing out the window.

when your feet hit the ground, you send betty one last text before walking to your car.
