Shackled
Has anyone written the discussion of the scene where Cassian says that he didn’t choose to be SHACKLED (stupid move) to Nesta? Cause I feel like that was totally brushed over and they needed to talk it out more. I know things were said out of anger but like I NEED IT! And if there is please link it! 🥺 ty

Rhysand is the worst leader and strategist ever, argue with your mom
The Night Court is a hotbed of cronyism and definitely to its detriment. Cassian has been a “general” for hundreds of years and yet remains admittedly inept at political manoeuvring and socialising with anyone outside of his family; Azriel is repeatedly fed bad information and is so terrible at spying that he resorts to butchering people for information instead, and is extraordinarily racist against the Illyrians; Mor can’t interact with anyone from the Court of Nightmares without having PTSD flashbacks, and yet it’s seen as appropriate for keep sending her there as an ambassador; Feyre is 22, clueless of Prythian’s history, totally reliant on Rhys for biased information about their political neighbours, and after learning how to write 1 year ago I imagine her written communication is abysmal—I don’t even want to know how she manages anything related to maths—and yet “her word is law”; and Amren repeatedly displays a desire to blow up entire cities or engage in conquest and that’s just tolerated.
All of these lawmakers, these all-powerful members of his political Inner Circle, wrestle daily with unresolved trauma. Rhys does not have a single emotionally healthy person in charge. And when all of this untreated mental turmoil comes out as some atrocity or violation of the rights of others, it’s just ~shrugs~. Their own people, and in fact a lot of other people across Prythian, are accepted as collateral for their squabbles with other rulers, or as meaningless casualties of their temper tantrums. Because of the positions of power they hold, their trauma becomes everyone else’s problem, with 0 accountability—and boy do they make the most out of that. Unreal that they haven’t been invaded or overthrown at this point.
Rhys encourages the Velaris locals to ostracise the citizens of the Court of Nightmares—to refuse them goods and services, as a punishment because he dislikes their leader, as if this isn’t a powder keg of social unrest waiting to blow. He steals from and attacks their neighbours with his daemati powers, not to mention openly orchestrating a plot to destabilise a neighbour. He allows (his idea or no, it happened on his watch) low-income housing to be destroyed in Velaris just to make a point to his sister-in-law. He cooks up this image of himself as a villain for 500 years and then expects his contemporaries to just blithely believe him when he says “oh i’m a good guy actually”. He lies through his teeth about everything, even to his wife, and rather than make any attempt to bring Keir’s army onside, he instead actively makes personal enemies of the Court of Nightmares’ leaders and civilians. The law against wing-clipping in Illyria is not enforced (why was Emerie’s father not prosecuted? How can Rhys be powerless to stop the men clipping the women’s wings, yet maintain enough control over the Darkbringer army, even when the CoN locals actively hate him, to send them out to fight on his behalf? He is the most powerful High Lord in history, and yet the wing-clipping is completely beyond him?) and he hoards an obscene amount of wealth, far too much for it to be believable that he is not economically exploiting his people outside of Velaris. In order for one person to be that rich, other people have to be poor.
It’s kind of shocking that Velaris hasn’t yet been besieged. Although it’s explicitly stated that the Illyrians are disenfranchised enough to want to rebel—only they are terrorised out of doing so by threats from Cassian.
Rhys is an awful politician. Truly awful. Dire.

see what always confuses me is what actually happened to sjm when she was writing nessian’s love story? because she set up the most perfect romance for nessian. and if you don’t think they had one of the greatest lead-ups to a romance out of all of her book couples then keep that to your self. like the potential? unmatched. the longing and the pining and the angst? unmatched. the reverse grumpy/sunshine trope? unmatched
sjm set up everything for their romance perfectly. the way cassian was the first to really look at and understand nesta. the way he could read her so easily. the way he goaded and riled her up because he loved arguing with her. nesta’s backstory. and also cassian’s. and how they could bond over losing a mother so young, a childhood spent starved. and just so much more and i’m like why did sjm not utilise all of this? where was the heart wrenching conversation about nesta being ready to die by cassian’s side? about the months they spent suffering apart? the love confession? where was cassian acknowledging his own mistakes? where was cassian’s apology to nesta? where was cassian being ecstatic about nesta loving him and wanting to be with him forever? where was soft, understanding cassian who could read nesta better than anyone else? where was cassian who was special to nesta because he didn’t care about her body but rather her soul like she explained in wings and embers? cassian explaining the mor situation and reassuring nesta instead of spending an entire book gaping and professing how he thinks mor is art and she’s a perfect person?
i hate on cassian A LOT but i’m really just so dissapointed in the kind of romance sjm gave us. i’m just not over it at all and i don’t think i will be until the next acotar book comes out and i can see the type of relationship nessian is going to have. because it could’ve been amazing but instead i hope nesta dumps that big man-child and runs away

the fact that elain is giving so much time to process her feelings and isn't even pressured to be near lucien when Nesta is never afforded those same allowances makes my blood boil. They locked nesta in a house with her mate!!!

Don't you think it's funny how Feyre told everyone what Nesta and Elain did in those first chapters of acotar, but didn't tell anyone what Rhys did to her UtM?

It breaks my absolute heart reading acowar and how little credit the IC gives to nesta.
After the battle in adriata, nesta is PACING the floor with worry for cassian and mor barks at her to keep her “forked tongue” in her mouth (pot meet kettle?)
At the high lords meeting, nesta feels he cauldron awaken and tells everyone something is off and nobody (except Cassian) believes her
After nesta legit watches cassian get gutted in ch62, mor again barks at her about refilling a bucket
When they need nesta to scry, rhys makes a comment about how she did not pick a fight - as if she has picked a fight about anything they needed from her. She studied with amren, even ultimately went to the high lords meeting, and had been helping with the wounded during the battles. Like the entire book she does everything she can to help with little to no fight - like where does he get that from?

the fact that nesta stood up for cassian in front of all the high lords without hesitation when she barely even knew him but cassian won’t even stand up or defend nesta to his friends (and when he rarely does, he gives them that stupid apologetic glance afterwards) when they’re literally sleeping together is just so appalling

i feel like nesta antis should love acosf a lot more than they do because it’s literally 700 pages of everyone except nesta fawning over feysand and nesta being humiliated and shunned for not fawning over feysand.
then it ends with nesta fawning over feysand

The reason why R/hysand hates Nesta so much is because she's the one thing he can't control, it wasn't until the end of A/COSF when she started to submit did he start to actually like/tolerate her.

nothing nesta could have done would ever have been enough for her antis. she accepted an unreasonable punishment, she groveled, she changed, she sacrificed herself, she did EVERYTHING for a “family” to whom she owed nothing. and i think for those of us who like nesta, we’re all pretty a) disappointed that her redemption was forced and at the expense of so much of her self and b) annoyed that the antis will never let us say a single word about nesta in general spaces without butting in to scream that she’s an evil ball of pure abusive hatred…even though i’m pretty sure the worst thing she ever did to feyre was call her smelly

Loathe loathe LOATHE when Nesta, who has always been denied her own humanity, compared to a viper, a witch, a rabid dog, a beast, pure death, impenetrable, is crying out to Cassian, asking for him to love her in a human way, a way she understands, not as a mate but as a person…and his response is to center his own insecurity…bitch…

Please write this book! This would be so fun to read about 😍
so i’m working on a magical universe in which the principle is that not anybody can use magic, but it’s not reliably inheritable and doesn’t seem to follow any class/ethnic boundaries because it essentially requires magic to become your hyperfixation in order for you to be able to tap into it
in other words, all wizards are neurodivergent, but not all ND people are necessarily wizards (because not all ND people are gonna have the same hyperfixation, let’s be real)
this makes a lot of traditional Wizard Behaviors make sense in a new way ( to be clear, i’m using the term “wizard” here as a nongendered term for any magical worker)
wizards tend to mostly keep to themselves, not because they’re aloof jerks, but because they’re awkward and have social anxiety and nobody wants you to infodump about magic on them for like 2 hours except other wizards
wizards are considered to have fey blood (even though they don’t) because they seem to Know Things They Shouldn’t and act kinda weird, and some people interpreted this odd behavior Wrong
some spells seem to involve dramatic hand movements, but this is mainly because the wizard has trouble staying still for the time it takes to cast it, not because a specific movement is actually necessary for the magic to work, and working hand movements into the spell is easier than trying not to fidget while reciting the spell
sometimes wizards will have 2 different incantations for the same spell because they have different vocal stims and each version of the incantation involves that wizard’s stim in some way
join in with more ND Wizard Things™ y’all, i think i’m on to something here
