whenever the flamel name comes up in history, more often than not the name nicolas goes before it. and whilst nicolas flamel is without doubt an exceptional and remarkable wizard, many forget that his wife perenelle flamel is in fact his equal in innovation and excellence. her accomplishments in the advancement of magical medicine seem to be carried out in a silent, discrete matter, leaving one to wonder if she is merely content improving and touching lives in the most subtle ways without expecting much credit for it and doesn’t care for a place in the spotlight.

even now perenelle flamel remains one of the more obscure figures in magical history, and though rumour says that to this day she remains active in the medical field under an alias, no one knows exactly all the things perenelle flamel has done.

and perhaps that is the way she likes it.

for my interpretation of perenelle, i very much imagine her as matriarch of the whole flamel family. she keeps meticulously track of all descendants, who marries into the family, who marries into other families, when someone is born & when someone dies, and their countenances. everyone with flamel blood has been painted or sketched at least once by her. all of this information is kept in several book volumes, sorted by century. 

additionally to the people born as flamels, the books also contain those who have been adopted into the family as they are regarded as much flamels as others within the family.

perenelle has been arranging reunions for centuries and this she still does even now in modern times. though they meet family members randomly and not so randomly throughout the years, the reunions are an opportunity for everyone to meet up & have fun together catching up. usually these reunions take place every 20 to 30 years ( depending on the current circumstances ) and usually last one to two days.

EDIT: PERENELLE FLAMEL DURING THE SACK OF BRUGES IN THE SUMMER OF 1596

perenelle flamel was in flanders at the height of the witch hunts in the area, staying in the magical community of the city bruges with family and friends where she spent time doing research and leisurely activities with her descendants. it was supposed to be a peaceful summer, yet through still unknown causes, muggles found out where the community was gathered within the city walls and an attack was launched during midday within the neighbourhood. it caught most off guard and caused understandably a lot of panic and chaos, with some fleeing on foot in their panic, others managed to have a moment of clarity and apparated themselves & others to safety outside of the city to flee from there.

in her recklessness, perenelle attempted to save whatever documents possible during this attack and had to be dragged out by her great-great grandchild caspar de merle-flamel to safety. both witnessed more of the destruction of the magical community in bruges, houses turned inside out and wizards and witches dragged away with their wands confiscated. all of perenelle’s family members managed to escape, but four of her friends were captured and later on convicted after a month of torture.

in the end, seven women and five men were arrested and effectively sentenced to death. three women were hanged, four women & two men burned at stake, and the other three men beheaded. in a despicable act of cruelty, the muggles put all of their bodies on display outside of the city gates as warning of what would happen to witches.
