Apartment 109
Introduction
Drip…drip…drip…
“109.” As soon as the number left your lips, the man chuckled. Something he knew and you didn’t, and you weren’t sure if you wanted to know. Lazily flipping through the pages of the binder, he closed it after not much time.
“Up the stairs at the end of the hall.” Slipping the binder away, he started to head back to the room he came from. “Oh, and try not to make a mess, okay?”
“Sure.” Responding quietly, you took the steps two at a time, eager to get away. The bannister was well worn and you tried not to grip it too tightly, it felt like it would give way with a hard enough push. It was easy to find the apartment you were after as it seemed the first floor was quite small. There were odd stains in the corners of the ceiling, possibly mold from too much moisture, but that wasn’t an issue you chose to dwell on.
“Megumi, I’m here.” You called out, knocking on the door twice. He was a friend from work, someone who you didn’t think would reach out to talk to you after he clocked out; but getting a text from him asking for your help was surprising and you weren’t going to ignore it.
“Come in!” He called back, voice sounding distant. Doing as told, you opened the door and were immediately met with a thick humidity in the air, enough moisture to make your clothes start to stick to you. His apartment was clean enough, a few odds and ends out of place and with a lot of things that were collected from the beach.
“Where are you?” Looking around the unit, you couldn’t find him. Wandering into the living room there was no sign of him but the TV was still on; in the kitchen, fish bones laid in the sink and there were enough stacks of tuna cans on the counter to last at least four months.
“Bathroom.” The word made you turn and walk down the short hallway. There was light spilling from underneath a door and you nearly opened it without thinking before Megumi’s voice stopped you. “Wait.”
“What is it? Are you…decent?” It didn’t cross your mind until now that this might have been an elaborate setup to get you to see him naked. Maybe the ‘help’ he asked for wasn’t so innocent in nature.
“Yes!” He responded quickly, not wanting you to get the wrong idea. “I just…I have to prepare you for what you’re going to see.”
“Megumi!” A scandalized yell came from you and you took a few steps back. “I swear to god if this-”
“It’s not! It’s not that or anything else that you’re thinking! I swear on my life.” He sounded desperate now. He let silence hang in the air before continuing. “I have a secret. One that you’ve never seen before and I strongly doubt you’ll see again after this.”
“What, you’re a mermaid or something? Is that why it’s so humid?”
“S-something like that.” Taking a deep breath, you could almost see him waving at the door. “Come in.” And so you did. And he was right, this was something you definitely had never seen before.
There in the tub that was too small, was Megumi; but not as you usually knew him. There were currently tentacles spewing out from behind him, four on each side and eight total, identical in their length and dark inky black coloring. You could see the suckers, nearly as dark as the tentacles, only tinged a purple hue. Everything moved independently of each other, the tips of each tentacle moving in different directions and the suckers opened and closed without thought.
“Told you so.” Megumi mumbled, making your eyes snap up to meet his. A gasp came from you before you could stop it at the sight of his patchy black and purple tinted skin with a shiny layer of slime covering nearly every inch. Stepping closer to the tub, you noted how his pupils had changed to a rectangular shape and that both eyes moved independently as well.
“Can I…?” Your hand was reaching out before you could stop it, dangerously close to a tentacle on the ground. Megumi nodded quietly, lifting it up to close the gap. It felt exactly like you thought it would, slimy and spongy yet surprisingly strong when it wrapped around your wrist.
“I know you must have a lot of questions and I can answer them all-”
“A-are these the only tentacles you have?” Hurriedly cutting him off, your eyes not so subtly dropped down to the waistband of his swimming shorts. “Or are there more?”
“(Y/N)!” Utterly shocked at the forward nature of your question, Megumi slapped his hands over his lower body hoping to shield it from your prying eyes.
“What? You can’t blame me for asking!” You were blushing now, a slow heat spreading across your face.
“Well for your information, yes there are- but not where you’re thinking!” Snapping a finger at you, Megumi sighed. “I- in my mouth…I’ll just show you, okay?” He had your complete attention as he put a hand over his mouth; you could hear his bones pop and see the way his jaw shifted, a wet sound coming from under his hand.
Another gasp came from you when Megumi revealed his mouth. The normal rows of teeth he had were gone, replaced by ones razor sharp and pointy. His mouth had split at the corners, making way for the tentacles pouring out of it. They were thinner than the ones at his back but moved in faster, lithe movements. Even his tongue was different, it was covered in what looked to be tiny spikes and your fingers itched to reach out and touch it, to know if the spikes would be painful or not.
“Happy now?” Resting his head on a closed fist, Megumi raised a brow at you, trying to hide how amused he was at your expression.
“Yes.” Nodding mindlessly, you didn’t tear your eyes away from his mouth. The longer you looked the more questions came up.
“Good, because I need your help.” Right, the reason he called you over in the first place. Forcing your eyes back up to his, you nodded with more intention this time. “I have a case in the living room that I usually soak in before I transform, but I wasn’t able to get to it in time. And I can’t exactly just get up and walk over there, the slime is such a fucking hassle to clean up.”
So that’s what the front deskman meant about not making a mess.
“So…how do I get you in this case?” Your mind tried to conjure up an image of the living room but you couldn’t picture the case anywhere, it was probably tucked up against a wall.
“I’m going to transform fully into an octopus and you carry me there.” Megumi spoke casually of it, choosing to ignore the concerned look on your face.
“B-but what if I drop you or something?”
“I guess I’ll just have to stick on tight.” Shrugging his shoulders, Megumi came to a stand. The motion caused some of the water to splash out of the tub and you nearly slipped when you lifted your feet; the mucus truly did cause a problem.
Opening your mouth, you were about to ask if you should step out of the room to let Megumi transform, but he answered the question by doing it right in front of you. It was almost grotesque to watch his body lose its form, his bones disintegrating in his flesh and skin start to sag from the lack of muscle. Rather quickly his arms and legs grew smaller until they were no longer there and his form took that of a completely normal, harmless octopus that was just over three and a half feet long.
Sliding up the side of the tub, Megumi raised his - now much smaller - tentacles at you, making a chirping sound to be picked up. Holding out your arm, a shiver went through you at the cold sensation of his skin on yours and the way his suckers stuck to you. Megumi didn’t climb too high up, opting to rest in the crook of your elbow and not completely cover you in mucus.
“Well, let’s get going.” Nodding to yourself, you took a brief glance at the two of you in the mirror and let out a little chuckle. “This might be the cutest you’ve ever looked, Megumi.” Teasing him with your finger, you chuckled again when he chirped angrily.
Making your way into the living room, you stood in the entryway, taking a pause to look for the case. Tapping you a few times, Megumi motioned to a dark wooden cabinet underneath a window. It looked perfectly antique with a few streaks of a darker shade on the worn wood and old handles you could imagine belonged in a home in the late 1800s.
“Never took you as one to have a hope chest.” You commented, surprised at the intricate carvings as you got closer. Wrapping your fingers around the edge, when you lifted it up Megumi dove inside and a splash of salty water hit you. The outside of the case may have looked like a hope chest but the inside was fitted as a large aquarium complete with pumps and the like filtering the water.
Megumi rapidly changed back to his semi-human form, letting out a sigh as he settled in and got comfortable. Taking a step back, you hadn’t noticed how large the chest actually was at first, seeing now that it could hold him with his legs completely stretched out.
“Thanks.” Purring out the word, Megumi flicked his gaze to you. Unlike in the bathtub, his tentacles didn’t wriggle around so much and it seemed he was finally able to fully relax. Standing by the chest, you shuffled on your feet; were you supposed to leave now? You’d held up your end of the bargain and there wasn’t really a reason to stay anymore.
“Guess I’ll be going?” You spoke softly, not wanting to disrupt Megumi who now had his eyes closed.
“You can stay.” He replied just as softly and bringing a hand up, he pointed to the couch. “Go ahead and take a seat, I’ll order a pizza.” Nodding, you did as he asked and sat down. The couch was close enough to the chest that if Megumi were to sit up a bit straighter he could touch it.
“This has been an interesting Halloween, learning my coworker is an octopus man.” Once the pizza arrived and the two of you had your fill, a sleepy old slasher movie was on, simply serving as background noise as the two of you relaxed.
“You won’t tell anyone, right?”
“Of course not!” You replied immediately and both of you knew that even if you did tell someone they would never believe you.
“That’s good.” Letting a few moments of silence pass by, Megumi spoke up again. “Oh, and (Y/N)?”
“Yes?”
“I do have a tentacle down there.”
