Meryl Streep isn’t celebrated because she writes such good parts, but because she creates them out of the words that are given to her. For much of modern music history, the same has been true of musicians. Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday did not write their songs; they interpreted them and, at their best, made them their own. Popular music in America started in Tin Pan Alley and continued in institutions like the Brill Building and Motown, all places where teams of musicians and lyricists wrote songs for performers.

The most disrespected person in America is the black woman," Malcolm X says in a sample used on Beyoncé's Lemonade. "The most unprotected person in America is the black woman. The most neglected person in America is the black woman." He was talking about society in general, but the same is true of popular art, specifically rock. The female artists who helped build rock are often forgotten, but the re-imagination of what rock can be and who can sing it by Beyoncé and her superstar peers is giving the genre a second life – and may be what can save it. Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston and Prince all died within the same time frame.  Michael Jackson died in 2009; Whitney Houston died in 2012, and Prince four years later: all within the seven years time.  They came together during a time of great music, in which they were all pioneers; and it's as if they all had to leave here together as well. :(
