hey :) so, unfortunately, my cat is sick and has to stay at the vet for a little bit, so i won’t be posting for a little bit. i think he will be alright, but i’m a bit too worried to write anything until he’s back home, so i will be taking a little hiatus to focus on his health. thank you for supporting me and i hope to be back soon!

soojin stopped when she felt the cold metal in her hand. she hadn’t been outside her room all day. if she still lived with her family she would have been scolded for being so lazy. perhaps that’s why she felt the need to go to the market downstairs.

soojin took a deep breath when she finally opened her door to the outside world. the air in the hallway felt fresh unlike her humid bedroom. the easiest part was over, now came the hard part.

she kept her head down as she made her way over to the elevator, lifting her hand to press the down button, only for the elevator on her left to suddenly ding. the doors opened and the apartment’s security guard came face to face with her. she bowed to him, expecting at least a smile, but he walked right past her. she frowned a little before stepping onto the elevator.

the ride down was a lot quicker than she had hoped. she was in the middle of rehearsing “keep the change” when the doors opened, revealing the sun shining through the entry.

she barely got three feet from the elevator when a woman called her name. “na soojin?”

“you’re in 1405, right?” she said as she held her dog in her arms.

soojin smiled confusedly, nodding.

the older woman turned and gestured for soojin to follow her. “i’m son hyein, my apartment’s below yours.” she stopped at her door, grabbing a magazine and a letter from the slot “the mailman has accidentally been putting some of your mail in mine.”

“oh!” soojin chuckled “thank you”

“is it alright if i stop by if i get any more of your mail?” hyein asked

“yes, of course. thank you”

hyein mirrored her before walking into her apartment.

soojin looked down at the letter and sighed, sinking down to the floor. rent was due and she didn’t have enough. turns out, it’s hard to support yourself when you’re too afraid to go outside.

she lifted her head and brushed her hair out of her face to look at the glass market doors. all she wanted was some ramen and soju, and though every part of her was telling her to forget about her rent, she decided to go hungry.

soojin woke up late. the sky was dark. she only planned to sleep for an hour, but her clock showed she actually slept for five.

“shit.” she muttered and grabbed her phone. she had texted her mom when she got back to her room and asked for help with this months rent.

3 missed calls and 2 texts.

she called her back, ready to profusely apologize for bothering her about money and then forgetting, but the call didn’t go through. it rang for a moment, only to turn into a high pitched whine.

soojin’s eyebrows furrowed. maybe the wifi was out. she went to her text messages, finding one long paragraph about money and savings. the other was strange.

“our town is in strict quarantine and the service is bad. have you heard anything about what’s going on? the police won’t tell us.”

what worried soojin the most was not the quarantine or the police withholding information, it was her mom. her mom never texted her like this. whenever they talked it was always about jobs and money and being a responsible adult.

soojin forced herself out of bed and to her window, feeling her heart jump to her throat when she saw the once empty road. the building was completely surrounded by what could only be described as monsters.

through the darkness of the night, soojin began to make out the creatures on the ground. some were shaped like people, though most looked like something out of a horror movie.

soojin closed the curtain with shaky hands and made her way to her front door, swinging it open without hesitance. she stepped out and looked to her right, finding nothing but a misplaced mop. she then looked to her left, and her eyes grew wide.

a person - or what looked like a person, laid in front of the stairwell surrounded by blood. she couldn’t tell if it was their blood or not, but she didn’t plan to find out. soojin spun on her heel and ducked back into her apartment, feeling her heartbeat in her fingertips.

she knew she couldn’t leave them out there. if it was a person, she would never be able to forgive herself for leaving them to die. she didn’t have much medical knowledge, but she could still help.

“okay soojin. we can do this” she said to herself “if it’s a person, i’ll help them. if not, i’ll come right back here. it’ll be okay.”

soojin looked around her apartment, searching for something to defend herself with. her eyes landed on the large kitchen knife. she grabbed it quickly and swung open her door, checking if the person was still on the floor.

they hadn’t moved. still.

she took another breath and held the knife out in front of her, slowly making her way over to the bloodied body. upon closer inspection, she could tell it was a boy. he seemed about her age, too.

soojin carefully squatted beside the boy to check his pulse. it was only when she got close enough that she noticed his face. she knew that face.
