strahd nation. i have a question

lets imagine. for a moment. that strahd goes through a successful redemption arc (lets go of tatyana, therefore breaking the curse and freeing barovia or something). how do you think he would act?

would his personality change significantly or would he just be the same sans the tatyana obsession? would he remain in barovia, or would he leave? what would his ambitions be?

i want to hear your thoughts 👁👁

#My Strahd actually goes through this in our campaign. His evil traumatized ex-lolth cult drow wife comforts him when Tatyana's soul is- #-released. He finds that he's okay. He cares about his evil wife and enjoys raising his son #Of course; his wife suggests world domination as a passtime 'worthy' of him #(she suggests they send out an undead horde to claim land for Barovia so Strahd can actually leave the small land he's been trapped in) #But for Barovia itself things are actually pretty great because Strahd is HAPPY; and we portray the soulless barovians as mirrors of Strahd #-Strahd's emotional state #So there's like 300 years of happiness and love in Barovia until The Dark Powers cause Strahd's wife to go missing #He leans REALLY hard into the world domination just to try open up new land to search for her #He coddles his son so hard he almost destroys their relationship because his son wants to be his own man (drops his last name even to not- #-be overshadowed by his father) #After he fixed his relationship with his son though Strahd settled down and there is relative peace in Barovia #He's still trying to take over the world though #However our team DOES work for him #Strahd's son was born with his soul; since Strahd's soul refused to reincarnate into anything 'less than a Von Zarovich' #Neither Strahd nor his son realize this #But it did Strahd a LOT of healing by being able to raise his son better than his dad raised him #(Strahd's daddy issues plus his wife's hardcore mommy issues really resulted in to evil people managing to create a pretty stable home for- #-their child) #Their son DID fall in love with the Great Great Great granddaughter of Asmodeus though #So the jury is still out on how that's going to turn out for the world #Especially since Glasya is ALSO obsessed with Strahd's son #And the one Strahd's son is in love with happens to be Goddess of Love for the Undeserving #Also if Strahd's wife is ever found she might just unleash an apocalypse oops

#Literally among my favorite books #5e Strahd had me like 'Ooh fun fancy dramatic vampire lord. 29 of the same cloak. Crying draped across his brother's tomb. Love that for hi #Memoirs of a Vampire had me frothing at the mouth #Memoirs of a Vampire is why over 1000 years POST CoS Strahd is a major ally in our campaign #I love him #I kept waiting for him to eat babies or something the way people talked like 'this book shows how evil he is' #Like literally he finds kids annoying but he was crushed when a bunch of them got murdered???? Like he went on a 'protect the survivor- #-avenge the 8 dead children' murder spree the second he got some blood in him #Like it wasn't even about Tatiana anymore at that point #(Which is why when I run CoS Ol' Bonegrinder is in ruins and the witches are Head of Pikes cursed with immortality. I can't imagine Strahd- #-would like the child murdering child baking witches much) #(Like the bandit thing kind of showed 'Strahd WAS heroic and protective of his people; but he was really graphic brutal and off-putting- #-about it) #I am in love with him #I support Strahd Wrongs

I think it's possible to play a tabletop character who truly sucks as a person and that it's possible to play a tabletop character who's very aloof but it's extremely hard to successfully play both of those in the same character. a character who's a total bastard and ALSO pushes people away gives everyone else both very little to work with and also very little reason to want to. if you're committed to playing an asswipe in a collaborative game they need to be a little bit hopelessly codependent, be it on the party or on elements of the plot. they need to have some 'the gang from always sunny' energy to them. you need to be prepared to get kind of crony with it. to swallow ur dignity a bit.
