Spring is filled with so many rescue anniversaries, and this is always a hard but beautiful one to share. Seven years ago today, we were contacted about some baby goats in dire need of help. Born on a dairy, they were taken from their mothers at birth so humans could use the milk meant for them. They didn’t even have the chance nurse to obtain colostrum, the first milk, full of protective antibodies so critical to newborns. Dozens were taken to auction where a man bought them to sell for meat. The ones who didn’t sell were left in the back of his truck. All alone. In the cold. Sick, malnourished, and likely terrified. By the time a rescue group got wind of the situation, most had died. We agreed to take in the three sickest: Jax, Gerald, and Forrest, and Dr. Natalie rushed to triage them. All had chronic diarrhea, pneumonia, salmonella, and were weak, freezing, dehydrated, and malnourished. Forrest’s front leg tendons were contracted and we thought he might need leg braces for life (hence his name ☺️). Jax, the sickest, tragically passed away the first night, but knew love, warmth, and kindness in his last hours. Gerald was so weak he had to be tube fed for the next week, and he and Forrest eventually had to be hospitalized at UCD. After a week there, Gerald continued to go downhill and humane euthanasia was decided upon to ease his suffering. @_mother_of_chickens was in the car on her way to say goodbye when he slipped away on his own. Forrest miraculously survived, though we were told he’d always have a compromised immune system and likely a short life, but we got nearly six wonderful years with him before complications from CAE took him. Jax, Gerald, and Forrest, no matter how brief their lives, were powerful ambassadors for the horrors of the dairy industry. No one needs goats’ milk besides baby goats, and when we choose to consume animal products, we are responsible for the “byproducts” of the industry… the most loving and vulnerable beings one can imagine. Thank you for supporting our work on behalf of animals, and happy rescueversary over the rainbow bridge to the three bravest boys. 🌈♥️🐐 (at Blackberry Creek Farm Animal Sanctuary) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqZmSRvOkSm/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Five years ago a tiny baby lamb came into our care after being rejected by his mother on a local farm raising sheep for wool and lambs for meat. Serendipitously, our vet, Dr. Natalie, happened to be on a ranch call at the farm and saved Finn, bringing him to @blackberrycreek where he will be safe and loved for his entire life. Finn’s story is a gentle reminder that rejection, no matter how painful, might actually be the thing that saves you. If you’re going through something difficult, remember brave little Finn (and then go watch some of his goofy baby videos in our story). Love will save the day. ♥️ #happyrescueversary #lambiepie #veganforhim #finneganmcschmooshles (at Blackberry Creek Farm Animal Sanctuary) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqW9hgGOYV_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Snowball and Sugar Plum are excited to see everyone at MacFarland’s birthday party this weekend! We advocate for a plant-based diet not only because it saves precious beings like these two from being killed, but also because it’s great for human health! Did you know diets high in poultry (especially chicken and turkey) and eggs rapidly accelerate Prostate Cancer growth?! Choose a vegan diet for your own health and feel good about the harm you’re saving animals from as well. ♥️ Source: “How Not to Die” -Michael Greger, MD (at Blackberry Creek Farm Animal Sanctuary) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqGjuysveXX/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

George is getting older and having a harder time getting around with his three legs and arthritis. He’s also been struggling extra with separation anxiety lately (luckily his mom works from home). Besides acupuncture and pain meds, warm soaks in the tub can also help his muscles relax. We’re trying everything to keep him comfy, and he is, of course, still the very best boy. ♥️ #goodestboy #thewaffle #olddogsrule #loveoneanother #captaingoldenbeardgwafflestack (at Blackberry Creek Farm Animal Sanctuary) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqBq36fvJLl/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Well, didn’t expect to be crying when I got the mail today, but here we are… For as many difficulties as we had with UC Davis’ large animal staff during Cromwell’s medical journey (if you’re just joining us, we had to take him to Purdue last year to get the lifesaving care he needed), the team of doctors and entire staff at the UCD’s Companion Exotic Animal Medicine and Surgery Service (CAPE) couldn’t have given us more thorough and compassionate care for Oscar. Beyond two surgeries, CT scans, X-rays, hospital stays, medication, tube feeding, vibration therapy, and continuous lab work, they were available to advise, listen, and above all, not give up on our brave little guy. When I showed up sobbing with an unresponsive Oscar in the middle of the ER on the weekend, they tried for a very long time to resuscitate him, and when they could not, spent their valuable time consoling me. Today I received this thoughtful gift in the mail…an imprint of Oscar’s two back feet which I often told the doctors I adored because they looked like little brontosaurus feet. With it came a card with beautiful messages from both of Oscar’s doctors and all the staff members who worked with him. Not just the standard, “Sorry for your loss,” but heartfelt, personal messages, many expressing how staff connected with Oscar and would never forget him or how hard we all worked to save him. I will make a longer post soon sharing Oscar’s full autopsy results, but today let us take a moment to sit with our gratitude for these kind, innovative, dedicated veterinarians who did so much for Oscar and continue to work hard each and every day for our animal friends. @ucdavisvetmed @ucdavisvetmed_vcct #drsosa #drmegan #grateful #sulcata #sulcatatortoise (at Blackberry Creek Farm Animal Sanctuary) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp9YayiurOb/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Cromwell, Grover, and Smudgecake reminding you to snuggle up with someone you love this rainy weekend. There may seem nothing special ajout these three brothers napping together, but the miracle of each new day they get together is never lost on us. Love one another every chance you get. ❤️🐷🐷🐷 (*For those new to our page Smudgecake, the brother on the right suffered a stroke that left him deaf and vision impaired at two years old and Cromwell, the brother on the left, had to go all the way from CA to IN last year to receive life saving veterinary care he was denied by our local university hospital). #loveoneanother #cuddleweather #pigsofig #friendsnotfood #getyoursnugon (at Blackberry Creek Farm Animal Sanctuary) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpozvTsOhRm/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Both dogs took a trip to see Dr. Natalie early this morning as George has been having some extra soreness and mobility challenges (likely due to him stubbornly trudging through two feet of snow) and Wrigley has a hematoma (at least that’s the best current guess) on his right third eyelid. Scroll for a photo. Wrigley’s eye has been seeping blood for several days and they think perhaps he just poked it on something. He is getting ointment in it twice a day and has a recheck next week. Luckily it doesn’t seem to be bothering him at all, but it sure looks alarming! If it doesn’t go away on its own, it’s likely a mass which would be challenging to remove. Anytime the third eyelid tissue is removed, the eye’s natural ability to moisturize itself is reduced, so he would need to have special eye drops 3-4 times a day for life. We are so grateful for one of our favorite humans, Dr. Natalie, for always taking the best care of the animals! #doggoupdate #wrigley #george #sugarbear #wafflestack #animalacupuncture @nstab6 @motherlodevet (at Mother Lode Veterinary Hospital) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpmG_FwuS8Y/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
