Lets Talk Wiccan & Hulkling: Infinity #3

This issue had the perfect setup to show us why Billy missed New York so freaking much. He even asks to watch a movie and it‘s shut down.

Eidolon‘s existential crisis is fine. He‘s a derivative, but cool concept at least. I dig his design and story, but there‘s not much else there. Why would I care that he‘s afraid he‘s non-existent. He‘s standing between something the audience wants. They could have just let him disappear there, so he wouldn’t take up panels that should be spend resolving the most important problem…And let me explain why that‘s such a problem to me: Now, when we see them in the main-continuity next time, we know that they are unhappy with the way things are, because a few pages in one issue can‘t save that. So everytime we see them now, we know they have unresolved problems standing between them. And that can, potentially, take years to fix. Wiccan & Hulkling: Last Annihilation only fixed Teddy‘s ‘I fell in love with a superhero’-line from Vol.2 this year. In comparison to the current problem, that insults the basis of their relationship with pseudo-cheating and expectancies about how their lives should go. Them kissing won’t resolve that. It destroys the healthy basis of their relationship and what always meant so much to me.

I also DO NOT like, and that‘s what I said from the beginning, that Billy did not want to see Teddy in the second issue. Billy should have realised that his life in New York does not magically make everything good and only them he should see Teddy and realize that he‘d give up what he has to return to his husband.

Teddy also is hung up on the fact that the empire is running well this time. What does it mean? Was ist bad because Billy didn‘t care? What is different? That is what SHOULD HAVE BEEN EXPLORED. Next week is the last issue, though, and none of their problems have been solved. They‘re going to stop exactly where it began!

I am happy that they’re coming back together at least. What I will take out of this one that Billy‘s love for Teddy is stronger than any spell and he will always know that something is missing without him.

What I will praise, though, is the artstyle. Billy casting as spell in front of the illuminated statue of the Greek goddess Hecate was gorgeous. All characters look consistently beautiful and Billy hasn‘t looked this good since Empyre. I was actually somewhat sad to see Billy return to his regular suit.

Let‘s talk about Wiccan & Hulkling: Infinity #2:

As you all know, I am very unhappy with the direction they‘ve gone with for Billy‘s and Teddy‘s first solo run.

But let‘s say I was on board with it, I still can’t help but feel very disappointed. There is so much potential wasted here. The premise was rocky at best, but even if we accepted that their somewhat dissatisfied with their relationship they do nothing to flash out that concept.

The potential lovers are just low-effort. The space pirate‘s name is literally ‘Goebig.’ If you split Billy and Teddy at least make it meaningful. The initial concept of Billy missing their old life is not even explored at all! They don’t care about the new people because they are still hung up on each other. At least let Billy meet his family and friends so we can see why he is so hung up on his life in New York in the first place! Only then we can understand how and why he ultimately makes the decision to return to Teddy. Same with Teddy: If you show his dream coming true, you have to show why it‘s ultimately not his wish. He has to see that even though he and his partner care for the empire 24/7, the empire will still struggle.

Moreover, I have a huge problem with the fact that Teddy has been kissed the second time without being able to freely decide to do it. He had no choice with David and cannot judge the situation with ‘Goebig’🙄. Teddy has been unnecessarily been pressed into two pseudo-cheating plotlines that do not add to the plots in any way.

I like their new outfits though. Billy looks great in his armor. And I like the name Eidolon. If my rusty old Greek does not deceive me it means something like Illusion, which I actually dig.

Wiccan & Hulkling: The Last Annihilation Spoiler Review

THIS IS WHY BILLY AND TEDDY ARE MY FAVOURITE CHARACTERS OF ALL TIME!!!

After reading Wiccan & Hulkling: KING IN BLACK I was so dissatisfied with their story and characterisation that it made me question my love for these characters. This time, however, I couldn’t be more happy with what Anthony Oliveira has written. He has shown here, without a doubt, that he knows these characters and what makes them special.

It also refutes one of the flimsiest arguments I have heard about them: that they are nothing but a unit and cannot function separately. Here, both Billy and Teddy work really well on their own. They have great interactions with other characters. Teddy‘s talk with Phyla stands out as an exceptionally beautiful detail. It was beautiful and I am so happy that Teddy could connect to his family. Billy can also stand well on his own and plays well off of Mur-G’nn and Abigail, who lies to him like there’s no tomorrow. An nice but much needed surprise was also to see that Billy has embraced who he is. His bullies couldn’t bring him down, Loki couldn’t, and Dormammu sure as hell wont.

And while they can very well stand on their own, the beautiful thing about their relationship is that they are, ultimately, stronger together. Even when apart, the other is never far away. And THE RINGS!!!! I CANNOT STOP GUSHING OVER IT! This is so romantic an poetic. A perfect metaphor for their relationship that was an integral part of the plot. I cannot express ho much this means to me! They can be separated but their love always connects them. And we finally get to see a proper proposal. I am crying so much😭

And their „origin story“ was all I was hoping it to be. It is sweet and nerdy and exactly how it should have been done. It‘s sweet and shy and hits all the beats I imagined. It was also true to life because I have been in Billy‘s place. You become quiet, reclusive and it takes someone special to show you your worth. And Teddy was/ is that someone for him. They bond over their love for comics and I adore the original YA detail that Teddy is still somewhat hung up on the asshole of assholes, Greg Norris. And Teddy‘s mom was the sweetest little angel. I have to smile while writing this because I can just imagine how happy she was for Teddy when he was mooning over Billy. And Billy waiting for Teddy after watching the game was so soft, all the while wrapped in Teddy‘s scarf. THIS IS ALL SO BEAUTIFUL!

We also finally get confirmation on Teddy‘s real appearance and it couldn’t have been done more perfectly. Teddy is neither this, nor that. HE IS TEDDY KAPLAN-ALTMAN, AND THAT IS MORE THAN ENOUGH!

I also have to add, Noh and Herc are the most adorable little couple. Their bickering is so cute and Herc carrying him around, both grinning like idiots as all worlds fall apart, is the perfect himbo symbiosis I wanna see. GIMME MORE NOH AND HERC!!!

Not really a question, but I just found your blog and after scrolling through a lot of very wonderful posts I just have to thank you for agreeing with me that Tini Howard is the worst writer who ever did live. Now, I know you didn't come right out and say that, but I read between the lines. Worst. Writer. Ever. Keep her away from Billy and Teddy and any other character I enjoy. Also, please do not tell me that you don't think that she's the worst writer ever. I need this. Worst. Writer. Ever.

Hi :D I‘m glad you enjoy my blog and posts so much.

But, to get to your topic, I wouldn’t say that she‘s the worst writer ever. I don’t enjoy generalising and the worst writer is definitely JK Rowling as she is a shitty person.

What I will say though is that I personally think is that Tini Howard doesn’t understand Teddy and Billy at all. She did an okay job with Strikeforce but it has become evident in Wiccan&Hulkling that she doesn’t care. I almost could not get through the comic at first because Billy was a whiny child without any agency except wanting to have some alone time with Teddy and getting drunk. Similarly, she declares Billy as the weakest link in Strikeforce and that just makes me angry.

His character has so much depth and power and she just sacrifices all of that for champagne jokes. Ffs, he didn’t even want to help Teddy save their people because he wanted to bone.

A point of contention for me is also that in almost every story she writes with my two favourite boys, they always become opposites. Teddy is the absolute jock while Billy becomes more feminine. And there is nothing wrong with more feminine representations (that‘s why I am excited for the new gay superhero Somnus, revealed in Marvel‘s Voices Pride), I want them actually, but that is just not how Billy‘s character was realised and I love Billy as he is.

To sum up, I‘d be glad if she would never touch Billy and Teddy again.

I was wondering why Loki wasn’t featured in any of the Marvel‘s Voices: Pride cover art, as he is more or less queer in the comics and mythology. But it turns out, he freaking was featured, but Marvel cut him out!

This seems to be the earlier version of the cover and this is what became the official artwork:

They actually cut him out which doesn’t bode well at all for the Loki series and Marvel‘s future representation of queer characters at large. If they will do it with Loki, they will do it with the Young Avengers too. Both Loki and Billy and Teddy (and Tommy) are incredibly important to me and this behavior worries me greatly.
