so the top gun fandom is kind of...dying. i mean i haven't posted anything on ao3 in two weeks which feels like an eternity but i promise i'm still here. i post a lot of shit on tumblr which is why i use my side blog more these days (@ethantalkstoomuch if you're interested if the complete rubbish i say sometimes)
but if theres anyone thinking of leaving the fandom as it's not as active, i promise you the people that are still here are exceptional and content is (to my understanding) still being made

Do you know any un-funny trans girls? I thought not. Ergo, James Derry Girls is not a trans girl

tumblr should have a feature where if it’s someone’s birthday there’s a little party hat over their avatar so their followers can see it’s their special day

picture this, greasy haired 17 year old ethan in an art class of closest friends. frazzled. exams are looming and i need this final done within the week.
i’d spent the majority of twelfth grade on the dark room developing photos from family negatives and it was now time to put it all together on an old wedding gown i found at the charity shop. i bring my findings out into the light, wedding photos, the family dog, various relatives crashed out next to bottles of jack daniel’s and cigarette packets.
i bring fourth a photo of my father, skiing in the alps, my friends gather round as i start this mad vision that is my final project.
my closest friend takes the photo and looks me in the eyes. no words need be said. i know what they’re thinking.
the photo didn’t go on the final piece and i hope to god they incinerates that dress when i graduated when i abandoned it after i finished my exams.

This tiny little thought is in honor of my girls' birthday today, though she's not a teen yet. Tomorrow is hard, but this day always brings me joy even with all that is.
I hope you like it.
The first everything after they lost Carole was hard. Mav barely knew what to do, but Ice was right there to help him handle it all. But now, Ice was out at sea and Bradley was turning 13 the next day. Mav sighed looking over the gangly twelve year old. His arms and legs were too long for his body, his brown eyes kind like Carole's and his hair looking more like Goose's every day. They were all important, but Mav was determined to get this one right. Especially the thirteenth birthday and ESPECIALLY the first holiday he has handled alone. He smiled at his son, wondering if it was too soon to consider him just that. He carefully closed the door and crept back down the hall.
He pulled his 'Bradley' notebook from the drawer. He had notes on likes and dislikes for food, clothing, music, and he attempted to keep up with the slang Bradley used, but those pages were mostly a mess of crossed out expressions that Bradley abandoned over time.
He flipped to the section on sweets. Under cakes he noted that for holidays, Bradley preferred chocolate cake. For Carole's birthday, only a lemon pound cake would do. But for his birthday, he wanted a funfetti cake with strawberry frosting. Mav smiled to himself. At least a box cake and ready made frosting were easier. He was particularly glad for that given Ice's current location. Ice was the baker of the family. Even though they couldn't be a proper family, they were in all the ways that mattered.
Pete put the cake in the oven and washed the bowls while it baked. He wrapped the four new comic books Bradley eyed last week. Then he wrapped a new pair of baseball cleats, a new Padres jersey, and a set of keys. Mav thought it optimistic to think they could restore Goose's Bronco before Bradley turned 16, but they would try.
Bradley slept in the next morning and Pete just let him. It was summer, Mav had taken the day off and he knew the day would be a rollercoaster for the boy. He was on his third cup of coffee and flipping the last pancakes in the pan when Bradley stumbled to the table, still bleary-eyed from sleep.
Mav turned and smiled, "Happy 13th, Bradley. Love you."
Mav accepted the grunted response and tried to ignore the piercing pain when Bradley's first clear words of the day were, "Do you think Ice will be able to call today?"
Mav shrugged then placed the stack of pancakes in front of Bradley. "No way to know. He's the Captain now. That comes with more privileges, but also more work and responsibilities. If he can, he'll call."
They ate breakfast in companionable quiet. When Bradley was finished, Mav brought over the first two gifts, the comics and the cleats. Ice, Slider and all the other Flyboy's preferred one big gift opening frenzy. After a lifetime of missed birthdays and single gifts, Mav preferred to stretch it out and squeeze every moment of celebration he could from each occasion.
They spent the afternoon at the stadium, the Padres were in the middle of a home stand. The team lost, but Bradley looked like he won, proudly sporting his new jersey at the park. When he dropped ketchup from his hot dog on the new shirt, he sheepishly thanked Mav for not getting the white jersey.
After dinner, Mav lit thirteen candles on the cake. Halfway through his rendition of "Happy Birthday", the phone rang. Bradley jumped up and ran past Mav to answer. It was Ice. Ice belted out a perfect rendition of the song in his smooth voice and Mav smiled at the joy in Bradley's eyes.
When he walked in the kitchen for some napkins, he heard Bradley answer, "I miss you too, Ice. But Mav has made this day great. Did you know he was taking me to a baseball game? Did you know he made me a cake and let me sleep in and, and he gave me the keys and said we could fix up Dad's old car for when I can drive. It would be great if you were all here, but Mav is like my dad now. Do you think he would mind if I called him that?"
Mav brushed the tear from his eye, happy that he had to let his friends down with their son. It was a great day. But he desperately hoped Ice would be with them next year.
