Yes, thank you. I don't hold anything against someone who'd rather live in the city and use public transit, to each his own. But that life sounds miserable to me. Driving to the grocery store (five minutes or 25 minutes for me, depending on whether I want the little store in town or the bigger one in the next town) is actually a nice experience since I get to look at the countryside and listen to the music of my choice while sitting in my nice private comfortable ride.
Also, it still kills me that some people haven't wrapped their heads around how illogical and inefficient mass transit would be in rural America... it really makes me wonder if they've ever actually been to a truly rural area at all.
speaking of perpetual arguments I've tuned out of, isn't it fucking obvious mass transit works in the US already, in the only areas with high enough population density to support it?
The Boston-DC corridor is the most densly populated region in the US, and it has a solid passenger rail system. Chicago has a competent system, NYC too. And the West Coast isn't part of my country so fuck them.
This idea that big city urban transit is just waiting for the government to spend billions of dollars is absurd. Most of the country is a private transport country--the densities will never make mass transit work and the people out there don't want densities high enough to make it work.
Low population density developments make up the bulk of the United States outside the major urban areas, and you will never make them cost-effective mass transit hubs. Never ever.
Where it works, it works. Elsewhere, no one wants to be shoehorned into a fucking train car with a bunch of other assholes. Yes, people would literally rather sit in their own private air conditioned capsules than be sitting next to someone actively taking a shit on the seat, even if its faster. Wow what a fucking brain bender.
Those poor proles out in flyover country aren't some unwashed masses merely waiting to be elevated by the urban elite--they know good and well what big cities are like and they rightfully fucking hate them. You may think a homeless man rubbing his hard cock on your thigh on the F Train is part and parcel of living in the civilized world but millions of other people think you are a fucking idiot.

This is one of the things I love about tumblr. I never would have thought that I'd see a post about our perceptions of the relationship between Neanderthals and H. Sapiens and how that relates to imperialism and modern concepts of racism, but here it is. And I never thought I'd love it this much, but I do.
The thing is that the portrayal of Neanderthals as having been inherently grotesque and alien to H. sapiens is something we will never have proof of. But we do have proof that, in different locations and in different populations across time, we all found eachother desirable. We saw eachother and wanted to touch. And the offspring were held by their mothers and raised and had their own offspring in turn.
When you look for the first proof that H. sapiens found Neanderthals repulsive, you have to wait until the Victorian era, when the white masters of empires were busy portraying Neanderthals as stupid, brutish, and (of course) dark-skinned.
In more modern times, we’ve had people arguing that instead of seeing Neanderthals as Benighted Savages, they should instead be seen as Noble Savages, (allegedly) cruelly destroyed and driven from their lands by H. sapiens. Which one of their two you believe says more about your modern political views than it does about ancient H. sapiens.
And, whether we construct Neanderthals as Savage or Noble Savage, the fundamental assumption we project into the unfathomably distant past is still that H. sapiens saw Neanderthals as an Other, with the language we use being almost explicitly that of modern racial dynamics.
But we have no proof of any of that. We have no proof of hostilities. We know we co-existed and we had sex. That’s it.
Humans obviously have sex with some humans and kill others. We also know that, when small groups of humans occupy vast spaces with infrequent contact with others, unique cultures will always form, some more hospitable, some more neophobic/xenophobic. But many cultures of small settlements placed among huge unpeopled landscapes place supreme emphasis on hospitality to strangers. Plus, we fucking love other social animals, as evidenced by how we befriended wolves.
I’m a humourless weirdo and a wet blanket about popular constructions of Neanderthals as “monstrous”, and I freely admit it. But that’s because it’s tied up in legacies of imperialism. Not only that, but it also privileges one culture (yours, mine, modernity’s) as being most human by implicitly assuming we can project it onto people in the past. Since you don’t pretend that all global cultures share exact same values as you do, it doesn’t take more than a few moments’ reflection to realise you can’t do that to the past.

All these paths you’ve crossed, these souls you’ve embraced. Their lives, intertwined with yours. Their faces etched upon your memory. You’ve opened your heart to the suffering of others, and, in return, their spark warms your heart and shapes your fate. Every spirit a reminder. Every spirit a goodbye. What do they teach you?

i still cant believe it became widely accepted liberal doctrine that trump is worse than bush based on “norms”. trump could wipe his literal actual ass with the constitution and that wouldnt be as bad as causing hundreds of thousands of civilian deaths based on completely made up bullshit and never even actually getting justice for 9/11 because to this day we havent held saudi arabia accountable at all because the economic relationship is too good

I can't speak for other social media webbed sites but I really enjoy how tumblr seems to just completely spin a wheel on whatever media is hot right now. Like yeah sometimes it's a new show that's big and actively coming out but also sometimes there will be a solid month where half my dash is Columbo memes. Defy authority. Get really into an book from the 1800s. Watch shows that haven't aired in 40 years. Celebrate the anniversary of the Boston Molasses Flood. Become unmarketable
