that amazing thing about ghost wars is that you do not know how reliable the protagonist is.

it’s been a long time since i saw a show that was so shady about the protagonist’s intentions and motifs. for 12 and a half episodes, you feel like you know him. but the way the director focused on his face and his expressions sometimes made you wonder… what is going on? what is he up to? have we seen everything important of him? are we aware of what he is doing all day? and then the twist at the end of the season definitely proves that we have NOT seen all his important, plot-driving actions since we - as viewers - have definitely missed important moments and actions of roman in that episode. he played tricks - on the people in the show but also on the viewer. and that eventually leads to one specific question: has he been reliable in the episodes before or was he unreliable from the very start? when did we start not to learn about his motifs and intentions? didn’t we see key moments of him since episode 1 or did it start in episode 13?

many of you call it “out of character” what he did at the end of the season. let me tell you - it is not. the show just picked up on one of the most apparent tropes of ghost stories: the question of the reliability of the protagonist. and the way the show did it was one of the most genius things i’ve ever seen.

what two girls really talk about when sitting alone at a table in a bar or restaurant: school/uni/work, how amazing the movie was, politics, the new necklace one of us bought an hour earlier, how amazing the food smells (or not), how long its been since we last saw each other, how nice it is to talk to each other, if netflix is better than amazon prime, why latin is unnecessary, how fucking stupid that one professor/teacher is, why the hell the waiter/waitress doesn't notice us, if we look better with or without glasses, how amazingly comfortable the new sweater is, novels, why we do or don't need maths and physics, what the best horror movie is, if we should go to an italian or a mexican restaurant the next time, how our pets are, why facebook is the worst, why nazis are stupid, if we should have drunken some alcohol before we went to the bar because the drinks are way too expensive here, what the most beautiful language is, if philosophy should be a regular subject at schools, why we were sick the last 4 days, what the pros and cons of a female quota are, if children are annoying or adorable, economics, how the trip to mexico was, what to drink next, the ambulance that drove by a second ago, what to eat next, what our thoughts on gender struggles are, what we last watched on netflix, Violet Paget, which places we wanna visit in the next few years, why art is subjective, why people care about money, if sport lessons at school are rly necessary, capitalism, childhood memories, the latest news we heard on television, the new shirt that fits the eyes so nicely, why we like x interpretation, pet stories, why we wanna be able to speak russian, if God exists or not, why our apartment sucks, which game we could play when we get home, etc etc etc

a person is not white just bcs they look white. a person with asian and white roots who is whitepassing is still partly of asian heritage, or more precisely, of mixed race. and it doesn’t matter which country you’re living in, that person is still not white. that person may experience “only” second-hand racism or may benefit from white privilege - and yet, that doesn’t make them white.
