hii!! i was wondering, whats the difference between a beta and a brit-picker? just so i can have an idea on which to pick

A beta is someone who reads over a fic for someone before they post it to check for spelling and grammatical errors, plot holes, flow, characterization, and anything else that the writer wants help with or a second set of eyes for.

A Brit-picker is someone who reads over a fic written by a non-British writer to check for accuracy when the characters and/or settings are British. They will ensure that the fic includes accurate British terminology, customs, etc.

Basically, a beta is someone that any writer could use to help edit their fic and a Brit-picker is someone that a writer might want to use if they're writing about British people or places and they're concerned about being very accurate in their portrayal. A Brit-picker is only editing for one particular thing, whereas the beta edits a fic overall.

So i'm thinking about writing this year and I feel like i can do a good job especially bc I read fanfic every single day but english isnt my first language and I know that the fest have betas but I'm scared that is going to be way to much job for them. Do mods usually have time to fix a lot of things? I'll try to correct it myself and put the app in English so it can correct automatically, but I can't guarantee that everything will be right.

Mods don't do any editing of the fics, so we won't be able to fix them up for you. It would be too much for the mods to help edit any fics when there are so many writers in the fest.

However, there are some other options:

Ask the beta for help very early in the process (like now) and see if they're up for the task based on how much you expect to write. While some may not be able to help, others may be willing. You won't know if you don't ask - and don't be afraid to ask a few different betas to see if they're willing to help.

If you're really struggling to find one beta to help, see if you can ask more than one beta to help and allow each to help with a different section. For example, if you have a fic that's 100 pages in Google docs, while it may be too much for one writer to do extensive editing to the entire thing, maybe one could do the first 50 pages and another could the next 50 pages.

Keep in mind that fics don't have to be perfect. While we encourage people to use betas to help ensure that their fics are as strong and easy to read as possible, this is still fanfiction, not a school essay or a professional novel. A few mistakes here or there will not ruin a fic and there's no way to improve your English and writing unless you try. Most readers are really supportive of non-native speakers who write in English and can overlook small mistakes. All you can do is do your best, keep practicing, and ask for help when you need it. We'll all be cheerleading you through it.

You won't receive an email if you signed up as a beta as some betas don't provide their email address to us. however, you will see yourself added to the beta list here. If you sign up and don't see your name land information listed within about 5 hours or so, contact us to make sure we got your form.

For now, just sign up and say that you're creating your account where we request the AO3 username. Also, if you come off anon and let us know your email address, one of our mods can send you an AO3 invite that will help you skip the line!
