I'm new to the fandom and I've been perusing some of the fics on AO3. But idk, somehow they always feel a bit off, and I think maybe part of that is they are such nuanced characters, and Mickey especially has such a STRONG and specific internal voice to me... But do you have any fic recs that are just REALLY in character? Like where they are just NAILING the internal voice?

I feel you and yes, this is always a struggle in every fandom to find the fics that portray the characters just right, exactly how you see them. We have the must reads and favorites tag, but I'm not going to tell you to look there, because we don't consider everything that is in character a must read, just as not all of our favorites are in character :) So I put together a generous list to start you off! :D (As always, those are just our opinions!)

Southside Forever series - A beautiful S10 gap filler from Mickey’s POV, starting from prison and ending with the wedding.

Iron & Blue - In one day, Ian loses his career and his year-long relationship… and then ten days later learns that Monica has taken her own life, leaving him with all her possessions. Ian heads down to a small, isolated town to deal with Monica’s fallout.

looked like a teenage runaway - Ian is seventeen when he moves to the South Side. Lip tells him to stay away from the wrong people, but no one remembers to warn him not to fall in love with the neighborhood thug.

Maybe Just For One Night (I’ll Let You Take Me Away) - Mickey shows up during Ian's first night at the group home with a car, a full tank of gas, and an entire night to blow.

Our Stubborn Love - In which, after years of being separated by more than just prison walls, Ian and Mickey try to find their way back to each other. A great fix-it with character study for all the main characters.

The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Ian Gallagher - Mafia AU. Ian is dating a mafia boss, and Mickey is his right hand. Probably the single most popular fic in the fandom, and it's deserved.

falling for you without a second look - S3 timeline. Mickey has to go out of town for a couple days to do something for Terry. He takes Ian with him.

I already mentioned a few, but let’s add Southside Forever series by @boys-night to  it, because my god, to fill in canon nonsense with such meaning and emotion and powerful symbolism that made me tear up, and to keep everyone in character while sprinkling in some loving D/s smut - that’s masterful. Love.

I'll add Promised Land to the list of the fics that made the biggest impact on me. As much as I wish this story to be finished one day, it’s still perfect just the way it is and I think everyone should read it.

😭 A fic that ripped your heart out (but it hurt so good)

Miles Between Us by @xgoldendays oh my god. For people who like deep and meaningful stories and able to handle a lot of emotion, seriously. I love this story to no end, but it kind of takes a lot of emotional capacity for me to read it, so I’m still a couple of chapters behind. But I have zero doubts it’s just as amazing and heart-breaking as the beginning of it x) Looking forward to finishing the unread chapters when my heart allows it.
