statement from the Pitzer College Student Senate

Exec Board statement in solidarity with the peaceful protesters at Alexander Hall on April 5th:

We, the Pitzer College Student Senate Executive Board, are appalled and horrified by the actions of the Pomona College administration at the peaceful protest at Alexander Hall at 4:00 pm on Friday, April 5th 2024.

Shortly after the protest began, Pomona College President Gabi Starr sent an email saying that any “students on the SCC Lawn or in Alexander Hall, who turn out to be Pomona students, are subject to immediate suspension. Students from the other Claremont Colleges will be banned from Pomona’s campus and subject to discipline on their own campuses.” President Starr then called in police, and, at least, 22 police cars with at least 30 officers from the Claremont, La Verne, Pomona, Covina and Azusa Police Departments arrived carrying batons, guns, and some with full riot gear to arrest a group of peaceful student protestors, including at least two Pitzer students.

An indigenous Pitzer student and member of the Pitzer College Student Senate was shoved to the ground, zip tied by the police, and taken away in a cop car. The student was standing on the sidewalk peacefully when they were violently apprehended and later charged with “trespassing and obstruction of justice.” At least 18 other Claremont Colleges students were also arrested and taken to the Claremont Police Department.

The Pitzer Student Senate Executive Board stands in solidarity with this Senator and the students who were present and wrongfully arrested from today’s protest. No student should feel physically unsafe or be threatened when engaging in peaceful protest. Those who were in attendance at the protest are encouraging all 5C students, alumni, and professors to email Pomona College President Gabi Starr at [email protected] to request an immediate lift of the suspension of all students who participated in today’s peaceful demonstration.
