"before you do something self-destructive, pray" sounds like such hokey advice but since self harm &c is often a last-ditch effort at having control over one's life & religion is also a method of feeling more in control and/or accepting the lack of control. well.

To Chione
I call to Chione, bright-shining daughter of Boreas who drives the cold north wind and mountain-roaring Oreithyia, mother of Eumolpos who served great Demeter, who brought to the world her deepest mysteries. Chione, beautiful goddess, fierce-hearted, bold of spirit, child of the frozen earth, yours is the winter, the long, dark nights; yours is the storm and the deep-drifting snow. We know you in the darkening days; we know you in the ice-bound lands. Chione, goddess of the frost and the rime, I honor you.

when albert camus said “the sea; i didnt lose myself in it. i found myself in it” and when sylvia plath said “if i lived by the sea i would never be really sad” and when hozier said “love, when the sea rises to meet us” and when an anonymous writer said “and yet my heart wanders away, my soul roams with the sea” and when homer said “I’d rather die at sea”

I don’t think Dionysus was raised as a girl for his protection. I think he was raised as a girl because they didn’t know better. Then one day he told them all he was not a girl. All of the mad women of the mountains who raised and loved him and would be his first maenads rushed to hug him and kiss the crown of his head. Hermaphroditus told him how proud they were that he knew himself. Silenus lied and said he had seen this coming for some time. The world paused for a moment for him but it did not change around him. The creeks babbled and the birds sang and the gentle rains of Nysa beat down upon the trees. His girlhood was in the past tense very suddenly and his boyhood stretched out in front of him.
