Loki, thinking about the time 2 days ago he found out he is Jotun: Do you know what it is like to be afraid of yourself?
Thor, thinking about the time 2 days ago he ate a dozen boxes of poptarts: of course I do

man, that other post got me wanting to babble more about the fuckin brilliance of how thor gets through to loki in tdw. i feel like nobody really appreciates it and i will WAX POETIC ABOUT IT UNTIL EVERYONE IS SICK OF HEARING IT
because, whether it’s intuition, emotional intelligence, or dumb luck, thor did exactly what loki needed to be able to even let down his guard enough to START addressing the real issues. He damn sure could not do that in the face of how Odin insisted on interacting with him, and he couldn’t do so with Frigga, who was nicer about it but demanded the same thing, in essence: that he give up his own perspective on what had happened, in favor of theirs. He couldn’t do that. I truly believe he’d have rather died first, and I am not sure he could have done it even if he’d wanted to. All he had left was his loyalty to himself, his right to define himself, the integrity of his own point of view. Asking him to give that up to ingratiate himself to those who hold power over him… it’s like an obliteration. He couldn’t.
But Thor. Oh, Thor. Thor goes to him and asks for his help. He knows and acknowledges the value of what Loki can do—and honestly, I think Loki trusts a request like that more than he would have trusted a seemingly altruistic approach. And then, after he’s broken Loki out of prison, he starts interacting with him pretty much the same as he did before all the shit went down. He treats him like his brother again. There is room for some push-and-shove between them, and Thor isn’t threatened by Loki stretching his wings and fucking around a little. And then, on the skiff, when they actually start talking about some serious shit, Thor treats Loki’s complaints as real, even when he’s disagreeing. He’s not insisting that Loki ought to be a good boy and pretend nothing happened. He’s not manipulating him into stepping back into line. He’s confronting him about it, and thereby validating Loki’s anger. I’ve seen people get very overwrought about Thor almost punching him, but… Loki had been begging for someone to take his anger seriously. To not dismiss it as the product of some delusion. To not brush it under the rug. In that scene, Thor is taking Loki seriously and treating him as an equal who is worth hashing things out with, even if that means conflict. Even if that means things getting ugly and messy before it gets any better. Loki needed someone who thought he was worth dealing with the ugly and messy parts.
That’s what Loki needed, and I fuckin love Thor for understanding that.

Bargaining was and remains the best character study of Loki I’ve ever seen. To me, it’s more canon than thor 4 or the TV show. Thank you for doing for that character what Disney couldn’t with billions of dollars. If you were ever inclined to write for that character again, I’d read it in a heart beat
I thought about writing Loki fanfic again for a bit after I watched the finale of season 2. I really enjoyed his big moment, as it was the kind of bittersweet glory I’d wanted to give Loki in my own writing. Most of that show didn’t do it for me, but the ending? Definitely did.
Thanks for sending this 💕
