2023-04-06: Daily Update
This morning I cooked French toast for breakfast, prepared the school lunches, cooked dinner in advance (lentejas con chorizo), did some laundry, some running after the kids, the usual. French toast, banana, grapes and vitamins At work I did the weekly review with Laetitia, a bit earlier than usual because she can’t on Friday, I helped one of our QA engineers with an error while testing and…

No Roll Quick Pie Crust
For Laetitia. This is a quick version of the traditional pie crust. It is not as flaky and good looking but it is good enough and if the shortcut makes it easier to cook dinner when you are tired or in a rush, it deserves a place in your recipe book. I got this recipe from a French group of moms that loved cooking and 2 other versions, very similar, from 2 other French moms, in a different…

2023-04-05: Daily Update
Back to everyday life. I got up at 5:30, fed the cat, prepared breakfast and lunches, cooked the vegetables for dinner, ran a load of laundry, remembered how nice it was to have a relaxed breakfast during the vacation. I prepared ahead peas with onions. This is a simple dish that tastes good. You mince a lot of sweet onions, almost as much as the peas, you cook them in olive oil until soft and…

Removing Distractions
I started listening to Ikigai before my vacation in Spain. One of the things the book talks about is flow, and removing distractions to be focused and present in the moment. Vacations are a good moment to revisit routines and rethink or reset behaviors. I decided to look into removing distractions. An easy thing to do was to pause work apps on my phone. This is less radical than removing them.…

2023-04-04: Daily Update
We are back home. We missed the flight connection, again. At least this time they booked us for another flight the same day. I watched three movies that I liked on the flight: Amsterdam, The Banshees of Inisherin and The Fabelmans. Amsterdam was my favorite of the three. I liked the story and the acting. I was surprised to see it had quite bad reviews, some saying the plot is hard to follow. I…

2023-04-04: Daily Update
I am going to miss waking up and seeing this view from the window. We left after lunch. It is always sad to say goodbye to family. We are sleeping in Barajas, our flight is very early in the morning. We went out for dinner to a tapas place. You pick the tapas from the bar, to pay they count the plates (there are different prices based on the colors). I liked the grilled artichoke and the…

Wind Power in Spain
Travelling in Spain you can’t miss the windmills. Spain is one of the European countries that produces the most wind power. 23% of the energy consumption in Spain comes from it. And you can’t look at the modern windmills without thinking of Don Quijote. I wonder if they would have been aliens instead of giants. Don Quixote Attacking the Windmill (1780s)Jean-Honoré Fragonard (French, 1732-1806)

We went to the beach this morning. It was windy and nobody went in the water. We relaxed listening to the sea, my daughter picked up pretty stones and played with them. We had paella, from a restaurant in Águilas. It was delicious as always. After lunch we went for a walk and stopped at a terrace. They didn’t have horchata here, they said it is still early in the season. We read the newspaper,…

Starchy Whiteness
My mother in law told us that after a few days here under the sun we had lost some of the ‘el blancor almidonado’ (Starchy whiteness). The sentence ‘mi blancor almidonado’ is from a poem of Federico García Lorca. My mother in law is a doctor of literature and can recite many poems. The poem is beautiful and very sad. It is the first poem of the Gipsy Ballads and tells the story of the death of…

Books in February
Les déracinés This is the story of a Jewish couple that starts in Vienna in 1930 and follows them throughout their exile. I started this book before my trip to Vienna and I almost gave up on it. It is only when they leave Vienna that I was caught in the book and really liked it from there. The family ends up in the Jewish settlement of Sosua, in the Dominican Republic. If you are like me and…

Vienna I: Upper Belvedere
I went to Vienna for a work trip. I arrived early and I could squeeze in a visit to the Belvedere museum. It was cold but sunny. This is the view of the Upper Belvedere from the Lower Belvedere. And the view of the Lower Belvedere from the Upper Belvedere, with Vienna in the background. The museum is famous for the Klimt collection but there is more to see. There is expressionism, like this…

Books in January
War and Peace In January I read 31 chapters of War and Peace, one per day. I am doing ‘A year of War and Peace’ with some people from work. This is the first time that I read on a fixed schedule. It is difficult to stop after one chapter. It forces me to slow down. Everyday I would like to read more. Instead of going further in the book, I go deeper in the chapter. I take notes, write in the…

Tiny Interactions
I liked this podcast episode from The Hidden Brain where they talk about the power of tiny interactions with people. During your day you have strong interactions with your family, partner, coworkers, and friends and weak interactions with the supermarket cashier, the café barista, etc. We value strong interactions as a source of happiness but research shows that weak interactions are also a…
