Stede was absolutely one of those guys who could never wink, but Ed winking at him that one time Awakened something in him and he has spent countless hours staring in front of a mirror practicing his wink so he could wow Ed at the BEST possible moment, and he sure as hell delivered.

My thoughts are all over the place the moment I start thinking about Edward's body laid out on that cot, face covered yet injury free, hand down like someone had been holding it, presumed dead but also NOT dead and how didn't they notice-?
The storm is gone and they're found tearing into a raw seabird (guilt?) so how long have they been drifting? How long has he been out? How long has rot NOT been setting in? How didn't they notice-?
It had to be for Izzy, right? The rest of them liked Edward before but it was done. It was him or them. But Izzy. Izzy who dragged himself up on deck to finally end it and still could only graze Edward's arm with a bullet to remove the threat VS Jim who brought the cannonball down while Izzy was half collapsed on Fang (except the cannonball didn't land and how didn't they notice-?)
Izzy would have needed to mourn. "I have love for you." "I loved you. Best I could." Even delirious with pain and bloodloss and grief he must have sat with the body and held that extended hand and maybe he couldn't bring himself to look at Edward's face but how didn't he notice-?
Well.
Maybe Izzy's sitting there, delirious, and they just got the body down and laid out - none of them looking or feeling too closely because the cannonball didn't land but he slumped to dead weight anyway, and wouldn't it just be something if after all that he just gave up on his own? - and the storm is still rocking the boat with rain a constant drumbeat and like. Even if Izzy's vision wasn't swimming it would be impossible to tell if Edward was still breathing shallowly. To hear any unconscious murmurs. He looks like a sea drenched corpse. Was moved like one.
Izzy grabs his hand, vice-tight.
And it's still warm. Makes sense - the Caribbean air is hardly going to cool a body that fast. He's the same temperature as the rain. It's nothing, but if Izzy wanted to - if he was inclined to hope right now - then he could pretend Edward was still alive. At least until the body did cool and the stiffness set in.
And that's the thought that gets Izzy. The idea of sitting there holding Edward's hand until he's undeniably a corpse is too much. So he sobs one last time and yanks himself away - Frenchie or Fang or whoever is keeping an eye on him moves in to help - and when he leaves that room the door won't be opened again.
Edward is dead.

Something I spent way too long thinking about during my 56382944th rewatch, in regards to a very specific line that Ed says in episode 1 of S2:
Tumblr media
I'm the fucking devil and these are the kids.
I've always casually thought it might be song lyrics that went over my head (we see Ed using lyrics a lot - like the whole, "here I go again on my own" sequence), but it's not--
Ed craves death. He wants the crew to kill him. And despite Ed never stepping as fully into a parental figure with his crew, he sees that modeled from Stede and no doubt he thought about it.
If the crew are Ed's kids, and if the first person Ed ever killed was HIS DAD for being horribly abusive (devilish behavior)--
Ed is embodying qualities he saw in his dad in hopes of the crew finally killing him.
Tumblr media
This adds another layer of reasons Ed experiences so much guilt when he comes back from the gravy basket. He deeply UNDERSTANDS the pain the crew feels, the agony that led them to make that decision.
Tumblr media
He gets it because he lived it.
Forgiving himself for these horrible deeds also means forgiving little Ed for what he did to protect himself and his mother.
There's also the more surface-level meaning of "son of the devil" archetype, with the crew being presented as just as devious as the devil himself. But this analysis doesn't sit with me as deeply as Ed=embodying his dad.
