So I think I figured out how the gang is going to defeat Salem

Okay, so how do we stop Salem has been a big question in the series, and I think I’ve realized how they are going to be able to do it.

They are gonna reincarnate her, the same way the Ever After Tree reincarnates the Ever Afterans. So Salem “dies” but then is reborn as some new human, and is no longer evil because she doesn’t have all that baggage Salem has and isn’t covered in Grimm goop.

First off, this just makes narrative sense. They are heading to a magic entity that can reincarnate creatures, if they are going to find a way of defeating Salem in Volume 9 (which I think they kind of have to considering that this is the darkest hour and we need some kind of light at the end of the tunnel), it makes sense that whatever they find would be related to the tree somehow. Maybe they find a wooden sword made from the tree that shares the same properties as the tree.

This also answers a question I’ve kind of had for a while, which is “How do you have still have conflict with Salem after the protagonists find a way to defeat her?”. If they were to say, find a vorpal blade that goes snicker-snack and kills immortals, then wouldn’t they just have to give that to Salem and she would immediately kill herself with it? Making it so that Salem wouldn’t die but instead be reincarnated gives us a way to “kill” Salem but in a way that she wouldn’t want. She doesn’t want to be reborn as a new entity, she just wants to fuck off into non-existence. This is also a very satisfying way of getting around the whole “You can’t kill Salem” problem. A lot of the common ideas I’ve seen like “Jinn just meant Ozpin couldn’t kill her, someone else could though” just feel silly considering how much Jinn goes out of her way to be helpful. And I guess you could have the Gods undo her immortality, but the story being resolved by divine intervention from the two biggest assholes just feels so unsatisfying. But reincarnating Salem just works nicely without having to have the Gods interfere or making it so they could actually have killed Salem all along, thus rendering the whole dilemma before kind of a moot point.

It’s also just… thematically nice? I like the idea of “killing” Salem by basically releasing her from all the trauma she’s had. She basically gets the life she always wanted, even if now she is just too far gone to realize that. It even fits with the whole “There will be no victory in strength” thing we got from her at the very start of the series. Instead of working to find a way to get through Salem’s curse with brute force and kill her, they find a different way to resolve things that actually gives her a happy ending.

Sometimes I think that Gege’s handling of his female cast isn’t that bad

Then I remember that Maki is the only member of the female cast to ever win a fight without help, and the last time any woman in JJK other than Maki won a fight at all was Mei Mei in Shibuya, over 110 chapters ago.

Okay, so insane theory time: I think the Ever After is gonna be an actual land of myths or something, and characters all having literary allusions wasn’t just a meta gimmick of the series, but an actual mechanic in universe. So like, there is an actual Red Riding Hood somewhere in the Ever After that is spiritually connected to Ruby somehow. The rest of the core cast all of have some counterpart in the Ever After too, even those who didn't fall into the Void. And everyone meeting their ”inspiration” or whatever is gonna help them figure out who they are and find their motivation.

This is probably my favorite design for post-Shibuya Nobara that I’ve seen. I like the black roots growing in, I like the new hammer and I like that a large part of her face is actually missing rather than it just being some tiny scar like I usually see.
