calloused hands in soft hands - Azem & Elidibus
When he returns to his office, she is sat there on his desk, her mask set aside atop the documents he has been working on – something that he is absolutely certain cannot be anything but quite deliberate.
All told, it is surprising. Not that Azem is perched on his desk, nor that she is not wearing her mask, but because Elidibus is sure that she is not due to return to the city for at least another week, when her vote will be required as regards reform to the wings of Akadaemia Anyder. Then again, she can be late and early and everything in-between when it suits her, and he should know better than to let himself be surprised by anything, for as long as they have known one another.
She does not budge from his desk, but a smile lights her eyes as her gaze meets his, brightening as he closes the door and removes his own mask.
“You are early,” he unnecessarily points out, reaching for her hands to hold once he has closed the distance between them.
No new scars, Themis notes. A reddening of something like a burn along the inside of her thumb, and her nails are blunted and ragged, yet it seems there is no more harm than that. There are the usual, faint, calluses at the height of her palms, reminders of weapons thrown and caught, and in the process of telling himself that he must not heal the burn mark for her, he tries not to think about how she might have earned it, or that his own hands are blemish free.
“Actually, I am here and gone,” she returns, glancing down at their hands before she fixes him with a stare that bears some measure of chastisement that…
…She cannot have come home purely because of…?
“Emet-Selch tells me that he believes you actually slept here on at least two occasions recently.”
It is no use lying to her.
“Extensive research is required for—“
“And that when he invited you to dinner, you politely, but firmly, refused,” she continues, the weight of her words somehow highlighting this part of the tale as the bigger crime.
Silence.
Azem adds, “More than once,” with a tightening of her hands on his.
He chooses to study her abandoned mask.
“Personally, I believe he exercised great restraint in not sending Hythlodaeus to convince or kidnap you.”
His faint smile is only somewhat reluctant, and he discovers it to be a mirror of hers when he finally allows himself to return his attention to her.
“My understanding was that you knew better than to refuse invitations from family,” she says gently. “Especially in my absence.”
“That my choices should make me a burden is not—“
“You are no burden,” she insists. “We are all devoted in our own ways. Sometimes, that means we have to trust that those we love will help us to… find a better balance. And I’m afraid, dear one, that that means you too. It is far too late to escape now.”
It is an easy thing for him to tell her, “I have no wish to escape.”
“Good.”
Reaching for her mask, she informs him, “You are expected at dinner this evening, and I have told Emet-Selch that he may send Hythlodaeus to remind you if you are late.”
“I will not be late,” he promises with a small, wry, smile.
She presses a kiss to his cheek by way of farewell, and vanishes.

Thank you very much for the prompt, Anon! :)
(Hand-holding.)
