MOTORCYCLES ARE EVERYWHERE - An Animated Short

[Artist's statement under the cut]

Howdy! I am an interdisciplinary artist who takes narrative inspiration from lived experiences whilst adding a twist of the strange and macabre. “Motorcycles are Everywhere” Is a short, 40-second animation that follows the point of view of a negligent driver’s near-miss traffic collision whilst performing an illegal U-turn on the streets of downtown Toronto, and its resulting roadside altercation with an eldritch motorcyclist. This short is inspired by the experiences of both myself as well as my partner, a passionate biker who takes his safety, as well as mine whilst I am riding with him, very seriously, and doesn't shy away from a more vigilante approach to interacting with his fellow motorists. Since we spend most of our free time cruising the GTA and touring longer distances via motorcycle, we have become painfully aware of the shortcomings of our fellow motorists, as well as gained familiarity with many different “driving climates” across different regions in North America; and in this field research, we have come to the conclusion that the worst drivers in North America are based right here in southern Ontario. Using hand-drawn animation techniques, I hope to provide insight into a problem often experienced by riders in a confrontational, yet joking manner

It is common knowledge amongst riders that they are oftentimes invisible to cars- through no fault of their own; many motorists simply are not as aware of their surroundings as they should be, and bikes have both the unfortunate visibility of a pedestrian along with the swiftness of a car. To counter this, many motorcyclists have taken matters into their own hands by placing signs in areas of heavy traffic with slogans such as “Watch for motorcycles”, “Look twice, save a life”, and my favourite, “Motorcycles are everywhere”, a delightfully ominous highway billboard I witnessed whilst making my way towards the Sturgis rally in South Dakota with my partner. These signs are meant to encourage drivers to check their surroundings more thoroughly, because the last thing a motorcyclist wants to hear when they have been in an accident is “sorry, I didn’t see you!”
