“He’s right there!” Steve says desperately, taking one unsteady step forward.

The man’s face snaps to meet his, and Steve watches those round eyes go wide with fear. The man’s hands come up as if to ward Steve away, and he stumbles away a few steps before he’s just… gone. As if Steve’s blinked and the man was never there.

First off, everyone who's frequented this blog should know I am the biggest of shrunkyclunks fans, so this story piqued my interest immediately, like. From the word go, so to speak. Then you add in the whole ghost story aspect, with Bucky literally (sort of) haunting Steve? It's everything I didn't know I wanted, all wrapped up in a beautifully written package. I loved loved loved getting to explore the spooky circumstances through Steve's shaky POV, watching him doubt himself and his sanity and that ever-famous resolve as the story progresses; he's a wonderfully unreliable narrator, except in all the ways he's not at all unreliable, which. Just trust me, the resolution to this story is so good. Highly recommend anyone who's even remotely into shrunkyclunks checks this out, and that goes double for people who like to witness Steve Rogers going through the psychological wringer, but also, y'know, in a romantic way.

hii do you got any haters to lovers fics?

Hi there! So, I actually did an enemies to lovers rec a while ago here, but that was specifically for long fics and I know I have a few more I’ve enjoyed over the years. Also, I don’t know if like, hate sex is something you’re looking for here, and if it I can probably do another rec list. Anyway, here’s some more enemies to lovers!

No, Mr. Bond, I Expect You to Pine. Big fan of this one, very funny and a little bit tropey. They don’t hate each other here, they just work for opposing sides, but it’s a great fic regardless.

Summer Don’t Own Me No More. I literally just reread this and goddamn is it still just as fantastic as I remembered. Bucky does genuinely hate Steve for a portion of this fic, with Steve being a cop (don’t worry, he’s not actually on board with, well, anything the cops or the government are doing) and Bucky being a sex-worker, and it’s a bit of a whirlwind romance for them considering the time frame of the story. Also! This is a solarpunk dystopian AU and the world building is so good. This is probably gonna go on my top 10 sci-fi list when I get around to making it, but for now I’ll leave it here.

Sorry, Not Sorry. I haven’t read this one myself yet but it’s been on my tbr list for ages and I do want to get around to it soon. It fits the bill though - shrunkyclunks, enemies to lovers, hate sex, meet ugly. All the good things.

A Marriage of Ice and Fire. What could possibly make the concept of enemies to lovers even better? Arranged marriages in a Game of Thrones-style setting, that’s what.

Stop Trolling Me! Another hilarious fic featuring oblivious!Steve and his fairly inaccurate takes on the motivations of one James Barnes. It’s also shrunkyclunks and anyone who’s been here a while probably knows that’s my kryptonite, so. Have at it.

And Now We’re Here. So, admittedly, I’ve never seen The Bronze (and likely never will, no matter how good Sebastian Stan looks in that tracksuit) which is the inspiration behind Bucky’s character in this, but you don’t need to have seen it to enjoy everything this fic has to offer. Steve and Bucky are rival coaches of girls gymnastics teams and Bucky is, well. To put it lightly he’s a complete ass who’s also very convinced he’s straight. One of these things remains true by the end of the fic.

Steve Rogers has better things to do than play Captain America for the public - so he doesn’t, much. What that gets him is Pepper hiring him a personal assistant, who turns out to be the guy he picked up not too long ago.

Bucky is fucked. Thing is, he wants this job, and he would really like to work for the guy. He’s from Brooklyn, he knows who Rogers is. Stories of him back in the 30s were awe inspiring within the Brooklyn Irish, and his return had only proven them right. It’s a well known open secret that Steve Rogers got shit done before anyone shot him up with super steroids, at least on his side of the bridge.

“You wanna be my personal assistant?” The sharp look is clear. This would be working for Steve, not Captain America.

Do The Things You Never Showed Nobody by dontcallmebree is a series of fics centered around Mob Boss Steve (who is still very much Captain America) and his personal assistant, modern day twenty-something Bucky Barnes. Okay, so, let me set the scene: Steve ran the Brooklyn Irish back in the thirties, getting stuff done despite the way the world at large viewed him, and only ceded control when he received the serum and went to fight in the war. When he comes back, he falls right back in with the mob, and while not everyone knows Steve Rogers is more than Captain America, Brooklyn sure does. Enter Bucky, who Pepper is hoping will become Steve’s PA and get him to actually commit to more gigs as Cap -- except Bucky isn’t interested in Cap at all. He’s much more into Steve Rogers. And let me just say, I do love a good mob/mafia AU, but what sets this series apart for me is the sheer domestic fluff we get between Bucky and Steve, because so often mafia AUs are angsty and dark and the couple struggles to find common ground. Not these two -- they’re both smitten from the get-go, and while it takes a bit for them to get past the whole hey you’re my boss maybe we shouldn’t deal, they don’t dwell on it for too long. Not to say there isn’t any action, or excitement, because there absolutely is, I just... really love the domesticity, and how open and sweet these two are with each other. Like, they’re so gone on each other it’s ridiculous, in the best possible way. Additionally, the whole cast of characters (which includes plenty of OCs as well as comics/MCU characters) is charming and lovable, and they just add so much to the story, and, god, can you tell how much I love this series? Because frankly I could go on. But lmao this is long enough already, so if you’ve got any interest I highly recommend this series!!

Part of Your World

Crown Prince Steve Rogers has known all his life to avoid the perilous sea, lest he fall victim to the dangerous Mer who occupy the wild waters. But in the aftermath of his mother's death he finds the only thing that can soothe his aching heart is the siren song of the sea, and in his grief he's heedless of his mother's warnings, walking the beach every night in order to feel something other than dark and lonely and lost.

He is not the only one escaping his tumultuous thoughts these nights, though, and nothing -- not even his mother's well-meant wisdom -- could have prepared him for how this meeting will change his entire life.

I made a moodboard for this AU. Wrote a little summary of a story idea to go with it. I had no intention of actually writing the damn story, though -- not until it got some traction on here and I realized how much I wanted to write this version of Steve and Bucky. So basically I conned myself into writing a mermaid AU for myself. Go figure. Also the title is misleading -- this is merman!Bucky but it has nothing to do with the plot of The Little Mermaid; no one's losing their voice or almost marrying any sea witches here lmao

Minka: “Fire Breather”

The third time Steve saw him was no accident.

Neither was the fourth, nor the fifth.

There was a turning point in every situation in life. That tip on the scale of accidental and deliberate, where something innocent could be warped and twisted into something premeditated and intentional.

Steve passed that point last Thursday.

Fire Breather by @minka-g. So, before I even get into this fic -- Minka is an all-around phenomenal writer and this isn’t technically the first time I’ve recced one of her stories (refer to this post on some of my favorite angsty fics) and you absolutely should check out their longer works. I just recently read Fire Breather, though, and I realized it was like, criminally underrated, so I thought I’d do my duty as an enthusiastic reader and bring some attention to it (and also her other fics!! I’m not kidding about that, especially if you like angst and plotty fics). Some highlights: Russian Bucky, which is a trope Minka has honestly made me adore; circus performer Bucky who’s special talent is, unsurprisingly, knife-throwing; Good Bro Natasha; borderline creepy artist Steve who is just that into Bucky as his latest all-consuming muse; and also soulmates!! SOULMATES!! Have I mentioned before how much I love soulmate AUs? Yes, probably, but you’re gonna hear about it again lmao, especially because I was enthralled by the way Minka tackled soulmates in this through Steve’s perspective. Also, trust me when I say I don’t generally read anything that qualifies as Dark Fics (or at least not often), so while Steve’s behavior is uh, shall we say, concerning, he doesn’t hurt Bucky in any way, and everything turns out alright in the end, so you think the creepy vibe of the summary might deter you, I can promise it’s nothing that bad. Just. Steve gets a little stalkerish, is all. Like I said, it’s got a happy ending, though, so no need to worry! This is a relatively short read and it’s sooooo good, I was hooked from start to finish. I wholeheartedly recommend it!

metalbvcky: “Mercury in Retrograde”

Night shifts in the emergency department are hectic most of the time but Steve loves his job as a nurse. Everything in his life seems to be in order, his Ma's Brownstone is fully restored and he's had Dodger for two years now. Sure he's single, but he can get by on his own just fine. Now if only Natasha would stop nagging Steve about his dating life. Not to mention she's been hooking him up with blind dates, time after time.

Then this insanely cute guy with luxuriant shoulder length brown hair and crystal clear blue eyes turns Steve's world upside down. It should be illegal for a patient to look that beautiful after coming off the anesthesia. The flirtatious space themed pick-up lines were enough alone.

“Are those space pants? Because your ass is out of this world.”

Mercury in Retrograde by @metalbvcky​ features nurse!Steve and a Bucky Barnes who apparently can’t catch a break, considering how often he ends up in Steve’s emergency room. Steve also can’t seem to catch a break -- he’s got a hot guy as his patient (slight ethical dilemma there, Stevie), matchmaking friends, and a body that likes to betray him at the worst possible moments, refusing to listen when all he wants to do is ask out said hot patient. God, okay, let me gush a little about this: Bucky’s space-themed pick-up lines are so bad they’re good, and his infatuation with Steve and his cute patterned scrubs warmed my heart; plus, we have the tried and true trope of an adorable guy having absolutely zero filter while he’s coming off anesthesia and it’s just super cute. If you’re like me you’ll probably want to scream (lovingly) at Steve throughout this fic, because he’s Steve and he’s awkward and he makes questionable decisions regarding his love life (or lack thereof), but it’s all worth it in the end, as is always the case with my fic recs because frankly we all deserve these happy endings. Oh! Honorable mention goes to Clint for being a good bro to Bucky, if a little disastrous in true Clint Barton fashion; I always have a soft spot for him in fics, but I will say he had bad timing in this one lmao. I wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone looking for some fun fluff, although Bucky gets, uh, pretty sick at one point? Like food poisoning kind of sick, so if you don’t have a strong stomach you might wanna skip over that bit. I think that’s it for warnings, though, so I’ll just end this by saying that metalbvcky’s other works are just as lovely at this one, and if you like Mercury in Retrograde I highly recommend checking out the rest of them!
