Love & Hate
1st Place for BLAM’s fourth Writing Contest of the 2023-2024 school year goes to Duncan Viscum '24:
We
You & Me
Do you really love me?
Because I love you,
That should mean something right?
You say you love me,
But somehow I don’t believe you,
Actions speak louder than words
And right now
You act like you hate me
You would rather be anywhere but by my side
Those 3 words are said too much
But not meant
Somehow, Someway
You sucked the meaning right from them
I once loved you
And I could never hate you
But I hate what you did to me
What you continue to do to me
How could all my love turn to hate?
All this hate, with no bridge big enough
To bridge the gap you made.

Collapse
2nd Place for BLAM’s fourth Writing Contest of the 2023-2024 school year goes to Vincent Laba '26:
The gaping hole, miles across, stretched to where the other side was barely visible. Important gifts, experiences, and events slowly sink into the deep murky waters at the bottom. Just barely visible, another figure can be seen on the other rim. They pause momentarily and look back across and down into the chasm as if harboring some regret. The figure appears to shout something imperceptible and starts to move to cross the gap but the distance is too large. As if by mutual agreement, both begin to depart. The sinking continues until nothing is visible but a murky surface with fog starting to form over it. The edges of the chasm slowly collapse as the chasm grows until the other side is gone from view. Any connection between the sides has long since disappeared. The many years it took to form the bridge disappear in mere seconds with a sudden change. Over time the water might drain to allow some crossing but for now, the gap is impenetrable for both sides.

Gap
3rd Place for BLAM’s fourth Writing Contest of the 2023-2024 school year goes to Jacob Leuer '24:
The loss of life can create the biggest gap.
The clock of society keeps on ticking,
And yet, a piece is missing.
A piece that was vital to your smile,
A piece that was someone you knew,
A piece that is now gone, blown away.
That gap will never really be filled,
Like dark matter in space, the gap cannot be seen,
But it is there.

Spaced Out
1st Place for BLAM’s second Writing Contest of the 2023-2024 school year goes to “Spaced Out” by Ransom Kaul ‘24
How can a space be so empty
and yet so full?
You were told it would be black,
but blinding, starry rays shine over all.
You were ensured silence,
but Aquarius, Aquila, and Areis just can’t seem to
shut up.
It should be dark.
It should be mute.
It should be empty.
You should be down there
running,
and yet you’re up here,
Floating
Remember your training.
In-and-out.
Stay cool.
Open the hatch.
Do the job.
Fix what’s broken.
Close the hatch.
Grasp the tether.
Get to the ship.
A mechanical sanctuary in a desert of mute, dark death.
Reach safety.
Turn around.
Just one more look.
What do you think?
Are you impressed?
That great blue and green pearl doesn’t look like much
surrounded by this black abyss.
In the end, I guess we are all just
out here,
Floating

When does it end?
2nd Place for BLAM’s second Writing Contest of the 2023-2024 school year goes to “When does it end?” by Cristian Valdovinos Cervantes '27
Space
What is space?
Is space the thing that I lack when I'm alone?
When I sit in my room
Thinking.
I have no choice
I'm jailed by my thoughts
In the battle I’ve fought
Over and over, even though I know
I've lost.
Or
Is it the thing I crave to not have
Sitting surrounded by “friends”
That only care for contests
Why do I keep breaking myself to fit in?
To fit in a space.
So is that it?
Something I have to fit into?
I keep changing myself to be accepted
To be the expectation to set the curve,
But then I fail to preserve,
The one thing that made me unique
Me.
Or
Is it the thing I crave for?
When the pressure is too much
And the world is the judge
When the standard is high
And you try hard but all you just want to do is
Undo…
Undo the damage
Undo the stress
Undo the broken pieces of
Me…
But
There will come a time
Where I hold the key
To all the problems I see.
Where my cage is broken
from the things that are not spoken.
Where I can use command Z to undo
The broken pieces of
Me.

Sands of Paradise
3rd Place for BLAM’s second Writing Contest of the 2023-2024 school year goes to “Sands of Paradise” by Jacob Lopez ‘25
The glowing, golden light
lowering beneath the horizon.
Drops of sweat rolling down your face,
red skin peeling off your neck.
Grains of sand between the creases of your shorts.
Strands of seaweed caught in your hair.
Toes touching salty water,
coldness running through your veins.
The perfectly placed towers of sand
washed away by waves.
