my new Destiel theory: Dean couldn't say I love you not because of his own denial of the fact but because Chuck refused to write it like Chuck's weird psycho-sexual obsession with Dean made him so twisted that rather than allow his character to follow a natural arc that the character itself wanted to follow (see s8 rewrite of "I love you" into "I need you"), he just kept dodging it through increasingly ridiculous and pathetic ploys. he couldn't bear to watch Dean choose free will (Cas) over his heavenly ordained plan, so he just kept fucking with their relationship (see every divorce/widower arc, and all the other will they/won't they shit). really puts Cas's "What's real? We are." into context. like they are, in fact, the only real thing, despite Chuck's attempts to dismantle their relationship.

To put it in the simplest words Castiel’s rebellion in regard to Dean was never about replacing heaven and God with Dean. It was about how now Cas belongs to Dean. Castiel’s role in heaven was as a soldier, his only purpose to serve. Being associated to Dean Castiel got what heaven never offered, unconditionality. Castiel doesn’t simply rebel from Dean. Dean chooses to remain with Castiel as an ally, a friend, as family. Castiel being off path or fishy wouldn’t lead to Dean lobotomizing Cas. It is made clear in Season 7 Episode 23 when Dean says, “I’d rather have you, cursed or not.” The dialogue has its own layers of interpretations, but one and perhaps one of the most positive ones can be, I know you fucked up and I know you are messed up in the head but you still belong with us. Interestingly the nickname Castiel earned from Dean in his most early episodes is Cas. Castiel is a Hebrew name roughly translating into “Shield of God”. Dean removed the suffix -tiel meaning “of god” from Castiel. Even unknowingly in the act of giving a little nickname, Dean literally removed God and heavens possession of him.

Is leaving kudos on fanfics not common courtesy anymore?

Something I've noticed on AO3 in the last two years is the lack of kudos and comments left on fanfics.

Fanfics have an increasing number of hits, but their kudos and comments remain minimal.

I understand that leaving comments is daunting, but kudos is the easiest thing you can do to show support and appreciation for an author.

Part of me wants to blame BookTok and the commercialized consumption of books.

Readers are more demanding and impatient for content, but they're quick to move on once a book is published. It's a constant demand for 'More, more, more' without appreciating and/or supporting authors. And these readers are now getting into fanfic.

I don't want to complain because it's not productive. But if you're new and getting into fanfic: Support writers.

Support means leaving kudos on AO3, and if you're able, leaving a comment. It's simple courtesy.
