Walked pass Mei Heong Yuen Dessert (味香园甜品) in the South Wing of Northpoint City and there are still seats available. So here I am, ordering a never tried before snow ice flavours combination. The Watermelon & Lychee Snow Ice (西瓜荔枝绵绵冰) was piled tall though the watermelon red is kind of muted as compared to the picture in the menu. Flavour wise, the lychee was the dominant one leaving the watermelon far behind. The pearls and jellies left no impression and I am beginning to question my S$7.50 dessert choice.

Luckily the S$4 Mango Roll (芒果卷) saved the day. A block of fresh mango is wrapped with steamed rice flour sheet and given a flavour boost with the drizzle of mango sauce. The tangy sweet fruit and flavourful sauce lifted this dessert out of the ordinary and made my day!

Sis bought this box of Zespri RubyRed Kiwi Fruits (S$6.90) which comes with 4-6 fruits inside depending on the sizes. This red kiwi fruit has a vibrant red core and sweet berry-like flavour. The entire fruit is edible, including the skin, and kiwis can be bitten into like an apple, peeled, chopped, or halved, and the flesh scooped from the skin with a spoon.

Note: There were six fruits in this box but sister's friend took two for himself.

Chinese ice cream and tea chain Mixue (蜜雪冰城) opened a branch in Northpoint City and I finally found the time to join the queue for their S$1 Signature KingCone (魔天脆脆). The ice cream is not as milky as say Mcdonald's vanilla cone and I found it tasted somewhat like a low fat version of yoghurt soft serve which I enjoyed. The waffle cone is tall, about twice the height of the soft serve and extremely crispy which adds to the value of this dessert.

Mum is growing old and not as energetic as before so I told her to take it easy and not spend too much time preparing dinner. When it is just the two of us eating, just do one pot meals like this Yong Tau Foo & Pork Ribs Noodles Soup or I can always do takeout.

My very first time trying 4Fingers Crispy Chicken but not for their fried chickens. Instead, I went straight for the jawbreaker burger – the Chicc Crisps Combo with seaweed fries and drink. The staff asked me which level of spiciness I wanted and I took the midlevel “Hot” option. As I unwrapped the foil paper, the single patty burger in front of me doesn’t look as intimidating as in the menu. On the other hand, it seems rather smallish to me. Taste wise, the juicy fried chicken patty is well marinated and crispy with mild spiciness. It is topped with smoked cheddar cheese, mixed greens and Thousand Island dressing between toasted sesame seed buns.

After dining out at Fu Lee Seafood (富俐海鮮), a tze char (煮炒) stall located in Block 126 Canberra Street, sis help packed for us the Mango Crispy Chicken (芒果脆鸡) and Yang Zhou Fried Rice (扬州炒饭). Love the extra crispy fried chicken cutlet with tangy sweet and spicy mango sauce. Even the fried rice is so good with flavour of the Wok Hei (镬气), translated into English means “wok thermal radiation” or metaphorically, the “breath of the wok”.

Sis dropped by Feng Food (台湾味 “丰”) at Northpoint City to pack home lunches for us. As per the usual, mum went for the Guan Miao Mian with Specially Marinated Pork Chop (猪排关庙面) while I took the Shrimp & Kimchi Fried Rice (虾仁泡菜炒饭). The fried rice might look very spicy to you due to the orangey colour but trust me, it is not. Overall, it is only mildly spicy with a sweetish note coupled fresh crunchy prawns and an over easy egg.

We often purchase ang ku kuehs or red tortoise cakes from Ji Xiang Ang Ku Kueh (吉祥红龟粿) if we are around the vicinity of the stall. This lot of colourful snacks are for both my family and sister’s friend. Each colour represented a different filling except for the red ones which is either Peanut (花生) or Sweet Bean Paste (豆沙). Grey is Salted Bean Paste (咸豆沙), Green is Coconut (椰子), Purple is Yam (芋头) and Yellow is Corn (玉米).

From the rustic kampong (term for village) in Malaysia came this packet of homemade Spicy Tapioca Chips. The tapioca (木薯) or cassava is hand-peeled and shaven into thin rounds then dried before frying in hot oil. Seasonings like sugar, salt and chilli powder are added to give it that savoury sweet, yet slightly spicy flavours. It is so addictive as you munch on one piece after another.

From the award-winning Taiwanese bakery famed for its Lychee Rose Royale and Red Wine Longan breads - Wu Pao Chun Bakery (吳寶春麥方店) came this Cheesy Strawberry (草莓乳酪) bread. The savoury loaf of bread (S$14.80) has wine-soaked strawberry slices and honey cream cheese giving it bursts of tangy sweetness or creaminess depending on which you bite into.

McDonald’s Singapore, the local franchisee of the popular fast food brand has been actively developing new products for the Singapore mass market. This April, they give us the Creamy Mushroom Double Cheeseburger topped with juicy grilled mushrooms and swirls of rich black pepper mayo. There is even a Creamy Mushroom Triple Cheeseburger with three 100% cooked-to-order beef patties.

I went with the Creamy Mushroom Double Cheeseburger Special (S$9.30) and changed my fizzy drink to a small Iced Milo (topped up S$0.85). The set meal itself also came with a side of Potato Wedges. As usual, the actual burger is kind of smallish and flat looking, nothing like the advertisement. But I love the juicy mushroom slices and that mildly spicy black pepper mayo over the beef patties. The combination of creamy and spicy mayo, earthy mushrooms and juicy beef really tick all the boxes in a burger.

Time for a hot dessert. The Taro Custard Pie (S$1.80 each) delights me with chunks of sweet purple taro nestled in a creamy custard filling. The taro (yam) filling is so fragrant coupled with the custard and deep-fried crispy pastry makes this an enjoyable treat for me.

Well, it is just the two of us eating dinner and neither wanted to go out to so I ordered pizza delivery from Pizza Hut Singapore. Told the operator that I wanted regular sized pan pizza of Seafood Deluxe and Chicken Supreme. All in, I paid S$27.60 for both the pizza.

Dinner came with plenty of dishes piled on the plate. The sole vegetable dish is royale or garlic chives (Allium tuberosum) but more commonly called 青龙菜 which literally translated as “Green Dragon Vegetable”. Moving clockwise, there is a portion of fried batang (Spanish mackerel), below it is mum’s special braised pork belly with shiitake mushroom and an egg. And lastly, there is a fried fishcake and three boiled fish balls to go with the steamed rice.

When for an appointment in the morning and it ended early so I proceed to the nearby coffee shop to have my brunch at the Economy Rice (菜饭) stall. From the numerous dishes on display, I chose crispy prawn rolls (虾枣), chicken & black fungus and stewed potato slices to go with rice.

On the way to the MRT train, I spied on the gorgeous confections at Paris Baguette and couldn’t resist the temptation to not eat dessert. Gotten the Blueberry Yogurt Tart (S$9.50) which is topped with glazed blueberries and red chocolate pearls. The light purple yogurt mousse is tangy sweet with marbling of blueberry compote and the sponge cake gave it substance.

Mum stir-fried this plate of Cauliflower & Prawns with king oyster mushrooms, minced pork and tomato for dinner. Together with a pot of her five-spice and dark soya sauce Braised Pork Belly and shiitake mushrooms, it is bon appétit time.
