The trouble with gardening when disabled
I had the energy to cut a few leeks and chard. Now they're in water waiting for me to clean and process and I'm in bed trying to decide between doing that or making supper, because I don't have the spoons for both.
It's going to be supper because we have to eat. And no way I'm chopping things on painkillers.

So like many many folks, I've been functioning at the very edge of my cope for months. Hence the silence. I'm at the point of looking at my peaceful place and wanting to cry. Taking slow, steady bites of time to fix things up, and it is showing improvement.
But! For those on the edge as to whether to mulch or not, and for the sceptics about the effects of mulching on weed pressure, I present this photo. The straw was laid months before the path was cleared.

Dear gods almighty someone suggested farming? Do they know how much backbreaking work, soulgrindingly narrow margins, Delphi-levels of weather predition and z oh yes - space is involved in feeding yourself from a veg patch?
Do they observe the conflict between "randomly allergic to anything on the planet", "able to eat maybe 20 things" and BEING OUTSIDE?????
Never mind. I know the answer is "fuck no". *sigh* I'm so sorry.
For those asking for my new food list, I’m technically up to 22 things I can eat safely if you include the small handful of spices I can manage and basic stuff like salt and baking powder/soda. Which yes, can be allergy triggers for some.*
The list is:
Chicken, Oats, Egg, Olive Oil, Milk, Cornmeal (which means I can have bread, waffles, and breaded chicken!), Leek, Maple syrup, Cane Sugar (sparingly) Potato, Red Grape, Spinach (extremely sparingly), Baking Soda, Baking Powder, Pink Salt, Rosemary, Oregano, Thyme, Basil, Marjoram, Butter, and Apple
Quite the array for someone who was living on oats, water and chicken just over a year ago :D
My hope is maybe in December or January to get either sweet potato or bell peppers back into my diet. So keep those fingers crossed for me fam. There’s just about nothing I wouldn’t do to be able to eat sweet potato fries again lol
Allergy explanation/ramble under the cut for anyone who wants it.

After a very busy few weeks, I took a few hours to try to restore order. Here is evidence of the weed-suppressing effects of mulch. Bear in mind, mulch might not be for your garden, for other reasons, but guess why the lettuce bed is going to take a lot more time to clean up than the onions and squash.

I love seeing these little darlings in the garden. Frogs are marvellous for keeping down pests.

Now I need to divert Nina's predatory instincts away from them and towards the goddamned Indian Mynahs*.
*an invasive pest of a bird in South Africa, with no natural predators. They are territorial, aggressive, murderous and clever. They've been seen to chase off indigenous birds from "their" space and to attack eggs & chicks.
