What is a Concealed Carry Permit?
Concealed carry means the act of carrying a pistol or other firearm in public either in a visible or concealed manner, either within one's person or at proximity to the target, on one's body or in the hands. There is no law in which an individual is required to carry a gun. The purpose of carrying the weapon is not to protect oneself but to make it easier for the other person or persons involved to identify and avoid the assailant and other threat. It is a legal way to carry the weapon, whether in your hands or your purse or pocket. If you are required by law to carry a gun, it is a good idea to discuss the situation with your employer or any law enforcement agency you may work with and determine how you will legally carry the gun and how you will conceal it.
If you are a licensed firearms owner, you must notify your law enforcement agency that you will be carrying a gun. It is also recommended to have an authorized gun owner's identification card or permit as part of the process for carrying a weapon. In most states, it is legal to carry a concealed weapon anywhere in the country except in the following locations: in school zones, at a place where having a gun is prohibited by law, on individual state or federal property, on public transit, at sporting events or any general assembly of ten or more people and any place where a person may be lawfully prohibited by law from possessing a firearm. You may carry a concealed weapon, so long as you have had your license to hold your gun before, and if you have no previous convictions for an offence related to carrying a firearm. In some states, carrying a firearm without a license is illegal.
In addition to having an approved permit, you may also need a license to carry a concealed weapon, depending on where you live and if you will be taking the gun on your person or in your vehicle. Before taking your firearm, you must be sure that you are within the law to avoid a citation, arrest or other consequences. If you find yourself in a dangerous situation, it is advisable to get legal assistance to evaluate whether or not there is a lawful means to carry your firearm, including the legalities of carrying or not carrying a weapon in specific situations.
